The Ashes Discussion

Our selectors strike again, apparently a net session is good enough to save yourself from the axe, despite being in abysmal form. Look for Wade to retain his spot after a strong showing in the nets vs a bowling machine. Inb4 Bancroft scores too slowly in the nets and is not selected because of it.

Or maybe he's scored a century and three 50's from his last 10 Tests? Lovell and McSweeney from the U17 and U19 got a net too against the Australian bowlers.

They must be going to get picked for the Test as well; or maybe they needed batsmen for the bowlers?

These same selectors were hailed as cricket geniuses 12 months ago when the Renshaw bandwagon was taking off.

It depends how the rest of the side takes shape, but if Maxwell is dropped for someone like Cartwright, who isn't in form himself, then it's shocker. Even if Bancroft displaces Maxwell it's a bad call because both he and Renshaw are incumbents, however Renshaw is in horrible form and Bancroft is performing as an opener so is competing directly for his spot in the side.

All that aside, someone's performance in the nets shouldn't be used as a justification, just be honest with the public.

46 not out for Carey.. Keeping the selectors on their toes.

I would say it is looking increasingly likely that this is where it’s at:

1. Warner
2. Bancroft/Renshaw
3. Khawaja
4. Smith
5. Handscomb
6. Maxwell/Cartwright/Lehmann in that order of likelihood
7. Carey/Bancroft
8. Starc
9. Cummins
10. Lyon
11. Hazelwood

I’d say Bancroft is in but the question is where.

Jake Weatherald -

1st innings: 152
2nd innings: 118*

Also scored 2 tonnes in the One-Dayers last month.. Another young smokey to keep an eye on, only 23 years old.

He is in horrible form. It would be pointless putting him up against Anderson, Broad and co.

At least he has some experience. Most likely Bancroft wont transfer Shield form to Tests.

Excited by the Paine addition, always been a big fan of his, like him a lot better than Wade & Nevill. Hopefully he kills it.

Smarsh tipped to bat at 6. FFS really

People love to rant and rave about nsw getting preferential treatment, but wa have some low quality players getting a million chances in the test side. Mitch and Shaun Marsh are the most obvious, but Marcus north (there were multiple batsmen in shield with 50+ averages when he was picked, d Hussey for instance) had a charmed run and was a duck merchant like the Marsh brothers. Ncn is also constantly talked up as a future test player over the likes of Sayers etc. Agar recently in Bangladesh over SOK in the first test was also a terrible call.

Paine is just mystifying. Hasn’t scored a hundred since ‘06 and has only kept three shield games in the past two seasons. Don’t worry though, he’s either a good bloke or has worked on his banter behind the stumps.

I legitimately believe that the selectors just made the executive decision to pick whichever keeper was making runs in the country for the Ashes, Paine had a 50 last game and a 70 not out this game, no other keeper in the country has exceeded 50 so far in the shield games this season, unless we're including Bancroft, who's in the team regardless.

Probably not the greatest long-term choice either, even if he fires he'll probably only have 3-4 serviceable years left before he gets too old.. But that's the price we have to pay when we have nobody good enough coming through the ranks.

Let's just pray that someone like Jimmy Peirson, Alex Carey or Sam Whiteman become good consistent batsmen within the next few years or we're in a bit of trouble down the track.

Darren Lehmann has scored a more recent 100 than Tim Paine in shield cricket. Thats right, our national coach who has been retired for a long time.

That theory would work if he was a keeper. He was fielding at first slip in those games.

That is just...stupid. I thought we were over all this rubbish.

Let's not gloss over the enormity of this Paine selection. We're picking a guy that can't keep for his state to keep in a Test.

Since Paine last played a Test he has averaged 24 with the bat in Shield cricket.

16/17- 26.00
15/16- 6.85
14/15- 17.76

So it isn't his batting that has got him in. Must be his keeping? No he isn't the Tasmanian keeper he's the first slip.

23 dismissals in the last three years for Tasmania. He played Futures League a few weeks ago and four games last year too (55, 49, 99, 5 and 120). At least he was captain of the seconds last month. Tasmania came last and won one game yet he couldn't make the side.

This is the biggest selection call. If it comes off it's the greatest call ever but you have to wonder if it fails what do the selectors do?
