Sharks under investigation for salary cap breaches

Talking about salary cap investigations why has the investigation into the possible dodgy dealings involving the Storm regarding Cameron Smith over the testimonial match earlier in the year gone largely unreported in the media?

It seems like they were something that was approved by Dave Smith when he was here.

Salary cap investigation heats up as Sharks bosses’ phones seized

SOME Cronulla Sharks directors have had their mobile phones confiscated by the NRL integrity unit as part of the investigation into the club’s potential salary cap breaches.
The Daily Telegraph can reveal some directors reluctantly handed over their phones to the NRL on Monday morning.
It is a dramatic development in the NRL’s ongoing examination into Cronulla’s alleged salary cap irregularities during 2015 and 2017.
“Unfortunately, I’m not able to make any comment as the investigation by the NRL is ongoing and confidential,” Sharks chief executive Barry Russell said.
One well-placed source said the investigation must be “hotting up” if phones had been seized.
The NRL would not comment yesterday.
Sharks officials remain concerned about what occurred in 2015, particularly now the NRL potentially has mobile phone evidence.
It is unknown whether then Sharks CEO and now Manly chief executive Lyall Gorman had his phone taken. He was not at Manly’s Narrabeen headquarters on Monday.

Cronulla’s salary cap drama broke in August when Russell self-reported what was a possible salary cap breach.
The NRL has made the probe a priority but is yet to nail down any final findings.
It is understood the NRL has been investigating Cronulla for six months.

Russell turned up suspicious and historic payments during a club-instigated governance review and immediately informed the NRL integrity unit.
In August, the NRL also impounded a number of servers.
The NRL has no timeframe for when it hopes to finalise and announce its findings.
At the time, it was thought the breach could be more than $250,000.
The Daily Telegraph reported in August that the investigation centred around undeclared third-party payments last year after the value of players increased considerably following Cronulla’s 2016 premiership win.
There is no suggestion coach Shane Flanagan’s mobile phone was taken.
The NRL had wanted several Cronulla officials to give evidence.
When the cap drama first surfaced, NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg said Flanagan, Gorman and former chairman Damian Keogh would be asked to front the NRL.

There's just a massive stink about this club over the last 7 years.
2011 ( The peptide year ) was Flannagans first as fulltime head coach.

2015 - Hmmm
2016 - Nah its all sweet
2017 - Hmmm

There are certainly no reasons to be suspect over such a dodgy club since 2011, none of all.

If the NRL find clear evidence of wrongdoing then they must be stripped of their premiership.

Please make it happen NRL. It would just make my fucking year.

Same, it’s all I want in rugby league right now.

Where did they admit to cheating the cap ? From what Flanagan said they didn't spend up to the ceiling or full amount for quite some years. He claims that it's about a tpa that wasn't reported. He also claimed it wasn't a great deal. If they weren't over the cap then they didn't cheat. I think maybe you should wait to hear about the findings before making claims that are not yet proven.

Yeah, but they got their premiership. Fuckem!

Articles would suggest they're only looking at 15 and 17. It would seem that a single year, they were compliant. How lucky..... NRL is like the guberment, they think we are fucking idiots.

The thing is, of the player(s) in question, we're not talking one year deals here. 2016 is not an isolated season, players would have been contracted for numerous seasons (eg, 2014 - 2016). Just because the physical payment happened in, say, 2015, doesn't mean it wasn't an enticement to stay on with the club for the duration of the contract. So unless all the 2015 incidents happened with players only contracted up to 2015, and the 2017 incidents with contracts for 2017 onwards, then 2016 is no less tainted than 2015 and 2017.

Just read the Sharks are bing fined and they've lost their coach. Fox Sports have a big long list of potential coaches but I was surprised that JD wasn't put forward.

Whispers evolving into murmurs regarding Cronulla's premiership and the salary cap investigation. We may soon have 2 teams in 2 decades who have had their titles stripped for cheating.

Ahhh NRL, at least nobody can say you're boring.

Where’s these whispers? Last time the Sharks did something to cheat, they were given a holiday to remind them not to do it again or else.
