Wayne Bennett - world famous for never telling the truth - on Latrell Mitchell:

“There’s always little issues to sort out with contracts but I’m confident both parties will get it right and Latrell will stay at South Sydney. Latrell will always attract interest because he is so talented. “I don’t believe Latrell will go the Broncos, Brisbane is not on his agenda, it’s really not. If he goes to the Broncos, he has a much longer drive back to Taree (his home town) than he does living in Sydney. Taree is a big part of who Latrell is."

“Latrell is happy at Souths and we are really happy with him, so we’re hoping he will stay. We’re negotiating now with his manager but I don’t expect any problems.”

The Joker.

“Latrell can only get better at Souths. He started to hit his straps at the back end of last season when he suffered his hamstring injury, but he has come back in good shape. Latrell is one of the most special players I’ve coached, not just as a player, but as a bloke. I like Latrell’s honesty and what he stands for. He cares about his teammates and he is prepared to put the team first. I think Souths is the right club for Latrell. We suit his personality and he is close to some of the guys he has built relationships with in Indigenous camps. He is great to have around the club.”

An unnamed member (LOL) of Latrell's management said:

“We’re not sure in what capacity Wayne will be at Souths beyond this season so that’s a big consideration for Latrell. Latrell is very close to Wayne, as are a number of players at Souths, We’ve had expressions of interest from just about every club in the game, so now we will see where things land.”

Never been about the money.

Rabbitohs CEO
Blake Solly:

“We don’t intend to comment on the negotiation after the way his last deal was played out very publicly. But as far as we are concerned there is no issue with him wanting two years. All I will say is we expect to have an announcement sooner rather than later.”

An unnamed source (LOL) close to Latrell said:

“It has never been about money. He wants to be at the Rabbitohs and is willing to play for a lot less than he could command elsewhere because he believes he will have success with this team and he wants to do his bit to make sure they stay together. The only issue has been with the term.”

“He wants to make sure he is at a successful club. He will do his bit to keep the boys together but no-one can predict where things will be at in a couple of years”.

McHunt

the funny thing is that the media have been reporting for a long time that since Bennett is gone at the end of 2021, he has absolutely no say in signings/recruitment for the 2022 season and beyond, that's now JD's responsibility.

but i guess that a headline of "JD deals Broncos massive blow over signing target" wouldn't get the same number of clicks

Fifita said the same thing before being offered a ridiculous amount of money. I’ll believe it when i see it
Did he though? I might be remembering it wrong but I thought he said something along the lines of "I want to stay but I need to look after my family bullshit bullshit bullshit"

It looks to me like Staggs has been offered some of McCullough’s dosh and now wants to sound all loyal and shit. Why did he never utter these words ‘I’m going nowhere’ prior till today? He had ample opportunity to voice this sentiment well before Xmas when the rumours first started that he was eyeing off a move for more money.

Maybe he wanted to wait until how he felt after kevvie had been in the role for a while. Maybe he is finally getting more money. I think he was disgruntled Boyd Macca and others were on more money and not delivering. I don't begrudge him chasing the cash.

While you're right that it's not done until the contract's signed there are a few differences here. We no longer have a fat dunce of a coach who managed to simultaneously be too hard and too soft while also incomprehensible, White won't be the bloke handling negotiations, and it took the Titans offering Fifi massive overs at the same time as the club was tearing itself apart internally while the players were getting flogged mercilessly on the field. If Staggs leaves it's unlikely to be because of the same everlasting clusterfuck we had last time around.

They still have to earn my faith back by making good decisions. What they’ve done since they sacked Bennett is piss poor and bordering unprofessional and there’s still involvement from those who made that decision and sent us into this spiral of bullshit.

IMO, that's a good sign that they players are happy under Kevvie so far ... because IIRC, Staggs position was originally "I've got one more year here"
I agree and I’d like to think Donaghy may be flexing some muscle in the background. Same day Macca goes Kotoni stays.

It's probably unfair on staggs but fifitas bs words of loyalty have left a bad taste. Could be looking for some guilt and stress-free rehab and to get bailed out of trouble regularly whilst trying to drain every dollar out of us just like fifita did. I'll believe it when he signs. You never know what family members are whispering in their ears.

i reckon Chricton getting what he wanted from Panthers has been a factor in Staggs wage demands.

At the very least, we have some ground to enter negotiations now with a new CEO now here.

Lets see how it plays out. Can we re-sign Dearden please.....thanx
