I won’t deny that roosters cap has a bad stench but that aside, that’s the benefit of success - we used to be in the same position. We would never lose a player we wanted to keep and they’d stay for unders.
Bondi is easily the most described location for a young rich man, the roosters are constant premiership threats, they don’t like huge pressure on their young guys, and have great systems to develop in. If you were Walker would you rather play with Teddy, Keary, the Morris Twins, Manu, etc, be coached by Robinson, train with Mini and SBW, and be a consistent top 4 team with a good chance of winning a prem or 2 in your next contract. What’s that worth to a player when the alternative is to go to a perennial basket case like the tigers, or have a desperate club like the broncos or cowboys pin all their hopes that you’ll save there team.
Once you’re on 4-500k a year, is another 200k going to make you that match happier? Especially if your losing, being blamed for it, not developing, missing rep opportunities, and burning out after a couple seasons.
It’s the issue for unsuccessful teams, they have to overpay players based on potential and pray that it pays off and makes them successful enough to attract other players for cheap. Those on top generally stay there because being an attractive club makes your cap go further, before the rigged golf games.
Not to mention clubs like the roosters and Melbourne probably run all parts of their club well and have a lot to offer players in their personal life (again, not including dodgey payments).
