Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2021

I reckon part of the reason the Titans pulled out of the Staggs bidding was because they are going to go hard for B.Smith and Coates.

Anyone see on 360 last night, they were talking about Sam Walker? Hooper went on to say no matter how much $ any other club throws at him, he won't be leaving the roosters.
It's amazing that that's all there is to it. Expect to hear nothing else except for Walker signing a 3 or 4yr deal for 400k.
If that was any Bronco, he would be 'better suited elsewhere' and the money would be any imaginable figure.
It almost feels like there is some bro code that the media do not talk about the Roosters off-contract players. I wouldn't have even known that Angus Crichton was even off contract, until he had re-signed for unders to stay at the Rorters. Add to that Radley getting off the other night at the judiciary. It makes it pretty hard to compete against these types of clubs..
I'd be fine with throwing 600k at Walker, which was the same $ that the Knights paid for Ponga.
But, what the Rorters want, the rorters will get.
Walker didn't like the shabby way the Broncos handled his negotiation process. He said the Roosters felt more like a family than the Broncos. How much has changed since then?

This is my fear as well, that we lose Coates. He’s the one I do not want to let get away.
If Dearden leaves Coates might follow him if the money is right. They'd both be happier at the Titans than the Cowboys but it doesn't appear the Titans are pursuing Dearden. Let's hope Tom has a blinder this Friday night and shows us why we need to invest in him. Of which, I'd like to see this pair work on their combination.

Staggs at 700k is top dollar but he is the one player we have who can make something happen.
He will create room for those around him just by being there. ATM we need him.

Well he's one of our few players post Fifita who can find the line. You can't undervalue that. But, at this stage, you wouldn't put him on par with Latrell Mitchell, Ryan Papenhuyzen or Nathan Cleary. There's your price point.

We used to say the same thing when players stayed in Brisbane, you know , back when we could win a game.
What irks is the media called BS when it was us , now it's legit.
It def is legit. Where would you rather be if you wanted to be a winner.
I know what I would do if I was Sam.
I'd take unders and hang with the well coached winners and multi millionaire businessmen who could point you in the right direction and make 10 times what I could make onfield.
Not to mention hanging around Bondi with a profile like that.
The kid will need 2 dicks
It will suit the two sets of books his Bondi masters run.

So regardless, what part do you disagree with pray tell. His comment about our retention / recruitment is a valid one.
He might be talk out of his arse but he’s close to being spot on - on this occasion anyway.
They haven’t left yet & are just as much chance of staying, at which point old mate captain hindsight will change his story.

I get what you are saying, but if we want to win a premiership we need guys like Staggs in our team. The rebuild need to start somewhere and we might as well lock up a premier centre while we have him.

Having said that, I hope DD is quickly able to wrestle back the initiative for the club so that we're able to set the tone when negotiating players' contracts. We need to get back to a position of strength where we can dictate at least the period of negotiations.

Stagg's contract talks have drawn on way too long. Unfortunately, this is what becomes of a club who totally stuffs up their recruitment and retention strategies. I think a major issue was when Hunt was poached by the Dragons. This caught the Broncos out big time and we've not really recovered since then as we then had the educated idiot playing a staring role in King Knut and boat burning saga.

The problem I have is the club is saying everything's been put on hold waiting for a guy who has a spotty off field image, questionable defence, and little in the way of poster-boy value, to quit dithering and sign a contract.

I don't see him as a future captain, just a bread and butter centre who might be good enough to play for the other side during the Origin period. Sure we want him, but at a price and I don't think he's the guy we're planning to build the club around.

That guy is Tom Dearden, but right this second we don't even know if he's good enough to make the run on team.

Enough, already.

They will definitely go hard for Coates and they probably want one of Staggs or Coates in their backline.

I hope Coates stays, but $500k seems a lot for him. Storm are also sniffing around for him so I think it will be tough to keep him... which is perhaps why we're going so hard for Staggs.

Decisions have to be made with Staggs, Niu and Coates all coming off contract at the same time.

All 3 are potentially most suited to right center (Coates played there all his juniors and will want to make a move there at some point).

If Coates goes perhaps Niu grabs that fullback spot next year (after a year in ISC) and Isaako goes back to right wing with Staggs the right center.

Staggs is a pretty known commodity and talent at right center... yes he's coming back from an ACL injury but I feel a lot of his game is built around his power.

Can anyone recall which leg the ACL went on??

He has a mean right foot step that may become troublesome after ACL surgery as well.

Have to remember Teddy had ACL issues early in his career, but has been healthy since, so it's not the be all and end all... Bird had shoulder/sternum, right ACL then left ACL so not recurring ACL injuries on the same leg

What any successful club would do is say, alright lets look at the three key areas of the field and build around our guns.

For the Broncos, it should be this way:

Backs: Staggs, Coates and Farnworth - build around these guys
Forwards: Bullemor, Riki, Haas, Piakura - build around these guys
Halves: No one, maybe Dearden but he hasn't set the world on fire and this is the key issue - currently we have lost / botched Walsh, Simpkin, Walker - Our next 10 years could have built around those three blokes and two of them we had.

So for the halves, you are hoping Dearden, Paix, Cobbo, that young under 18s hooker EXCEED expectations as opposed to the above three who you hoped lived up to expectations, that's even if Dearden stays. None of these guys are currently ready, so you need stop gaps / experienced opportunistic signings. Our club is going to struggle as long as our spine continues to be Isaako, Croft, Turpin. This isn't because these blokes can't be serviceable, it is because they won't be a top 8 spine.

I'll say what nobody is saying, and is the #1 cause of all the bullshit in the media.

We are losing games.

That's all there is to it. For decades, Brisbane won 60%+ of their games and was (and still is) one of the highest performing on-field clubs of the NRL era. Currently, we're one of the worst. For decades, we sat there and giggled at Wests Tigers losing Teddy/Moses/Woods and always enjoyed the train wreck that was St George. We enjoyed seeing Newcastle fail, repeatedly. The media went hard, the fans went OTT (Oust Doust, anyone) and the cycle repeated. News sells, and we clicked on it knowing we were the big dog.

Sadly, it's our turn. We're the runt of the current litter. All news will be linked back to Brisbane's woeful performance, all signings will be linked and the media will continually link "good" players to Brisbane to sell further spots and fill airtime.

Should Staggs, and Coates stay? Yes. Should they get paid probably more than market? Yes, because players want to win games and we simply aren't. PVL aside, the league cannot afford the Broncos to tumble and no matter how magical the Dolphin bid sounds, it wont be an overnight success anyway nor will it match the financial performance and brand penetration of the Broncos.

is Dearden the right guy? Probably, but what I do know is deathriding him to be Cronk-like after 20 games is a bit...interesting.

So, why get angry about it? If you want Kent, Badel, Hoopless and the others to shut up, help them win games.

Get out to the game & support your club. Buy the stickers.

BREAKING :
