RUMOUR Payne Haas 10yrs

You guys are all nuts, he is the only good thing about this club in the past 4 years and for a 21 year old, plays better and more consistently than any other Bronco in the last half decade.

I would 100% get behind this.
They're all self entitled and still think the Broncos are the glam club or the NRL

Guarantee if half the posters in here were faced with the dilemma to keep Haas on a deal like this or risk losing him they'd fold under the pressure and check on this forum before doing so.

I'd LOVE to go back on previous threads and see all these expert opinions put to task on other recruitment ideas. We're fans. Let's not forget that. We aren't in these board rooms or meetings. We don't know squat

You guys are all acting like the club has some upper hand here in negotiations... The only upper hand we have is the handle of a wooden spoon. Let's be real here..

What player is signing here for unders right now with no set spine or premiership window?

I'm a rebuild the one thing you need most of all is certainty. That's where you start.

"Come to the Broncos and you: 1. Get to play with Payne Haas and Katoni Staggs and 2. Get rewarded for hard work ethic and get cast out if you're a dick head"

Just on the subject of character.

Last year Haas reportedly threatened violence towards a female police officer. Also I seem to remember he was smashing the pokies with the Milford gang before the Parra semi final? These things should matter.

10 years is mad. I would be happy for any other club to sign Haas for 7 years at the end of his current contract for 1M a season.

I suggest, and this is just a thought.. we try and copy Storm recruiting and retention strategies and not take ideas from Manly and the Cows.

Hopefully sanity prevails with some wizard contract clauses, because this is a potential multi year anchor on a club already under performing on the field.

Resigning the only player in the team performing, in an under performing team is mad?
Payne puts in every game, more than any other 2 Broncos combined.

Lock him down, Bronco for life.

Payne now has the chance to forge a better culture amongst the boys than the influence of players like Fifita and TPJ.

Payne is by far obviously our best player but 10 years is madness.

There’s 14 clubs above us who have managed to achieve better results than we have without Payne Haas. He’s an amazing player but he isn’t Tom Trbo.

How have cowboys gone since 2017?

Give him a 5 year deal at 1 million but to have that much of your cap invested for a decade and hope he doesn’t fade into obscurity like hundreds of gun props have before is irresponsible.

It’s a White / Nolan deal.

I probably would prefer a little bit shorter and a little bit less $$$ but in the end I'm not going to complain about us wrapping up a start player before he hits the market, the thing we have been complaining about not happening.
I'm also not going to judge the club based on media reports. DD is a proven smart operator and I trust him.

It is unusual to regard a prop as marquee player, but it is not without precedent. We had a good/great squad but still had not won anything until they added Lazarus (and to a lesser extent Gilly) to our forward pack. Lazarus was just an out and out winner with a great work ethic and I can see a fair bit of that in Haas.

Make sense. The detail matters a great deal I would say.

A good spine can make cheap forwards and outside backs into a champion team, while elite forwards definitely help, they’ll never make a bad spine into a Grand Final threat.

They're talking about a ten year, $10 million contract. But they're in no hurry as he's currently contracted until 2023. The new deal would propose keeping him until 2031. It would be the biggest offer in the club's history, pending Karl Morris's approval.

Payne's agent Chris Orr:

“Discussions are progressing positively with the Broncos. It helps that Payne has confidence in his coaches, fellow players and head office. Payne is a special player who brings a lot to the Broncos."

Ben Ikin:

“We will remain in the conversation with Payne and his agent about how we make sure he stays at the Broncos for life. The conversation is bubbling along but we have no plans to lose Payne Haas. Keeping him at the club is always on our radar, it’s not something that ever drops off."

“We would like to think Payne wants to be here for the long-term. The Broncos certainly want to keep him and as the conversation continues with his agent, hopefully we can at some point land on something we are both happy with at the right time.”

“Payne is a special player. He plays in the toughest position on the field and he has such high personal standards and he brings them to every game, every week, into every training session. I have only got to know him over the past few weeks and everything I thought he would be, Payne has exceeded my expectations.”

Payne, last month:

“I like the Broncos. I know some guys have left but this is a special club with a rich history. Things can happen in footy, we all know that, but I would like to be part of us having success again. I have some flaws in my game I have to work on, I am still a young middle and I’m proud of what I have done in a short space of time. I want to keep working hard and see what I can do.”

Apart from the Badel propoganda, nowhere in that statement from either Hass or Ikin am i seeing;

1. $1 million a season contract
2. 10 year contract being offered.

From my POV, this literally could be anything, any number of years at any number of $$$.

The one thing we must do though, is lock this guy down past his current contract and pay him accordingly.

The club is doing this, which makes me very very happy...

Fisher Harris just signed for 800k 5 years. Haas is better than him and has bucket loads more talent and potential. Man it’s good to have someone running this club with there head screwed on! I do hope it’s 7 years so a total of 10 including his current contract. But I don’t mind either or get it done!

We’ve never seen a prop with more talent than Payne Haas. Let’s be honest here he will retire as the best. His work ethic and attitude his second to none.

There has only been 1 NRL deal worth 10 years offered....

And none since....

Speaks volumes about the Cowboys...

And the rest of the league.....

Frankly if the Storm, Panthers or Roosters arent doing it.....probably not worth doing....

He’s an amazing talent and genetic freak. No question. Almost won a dally m in his rookie season. Not only is that unheard of, I don’t believe a prop has ever won it.

But Milford and Hunt were our halves pairing for the next decade once. Ben Barba was going to be the best fullback of all time, Dearden was the future.

if anyone deserves a million dollar it is Haas. But 10 years is a very long time in rugby league. The game is in many ways unrecognisable to what it was in 2011.

He has been involved in an off field incident every preseason and has missed the start of 2 seasons as a result.

10 years is a huge risk. No matter who the player is.

Props aren't worth this kind of money. Not even Payne Haas. 10 years is also too long. Half the contract duration and lower the dollar value I say. If his parasite manager convinces him that he should chase the dollars elsewhere, then bye Payne!

When Payne was signed to his current contract ( think it was $500-550k per season ) people on here thought it was a mistake. Now if you go and look on zerotackle.com Payne is the 57th highest paid player in the NRL. Peanuts really. Now if he was paid $1m per season he would today, as a 21 year old remember, have to be closer to the pointy end of value for money of those paid $1m +. Sure, a 10 year contract length is risky but that only takes him to 31 years of age. Sure, he has had off field issues but I would be confident Donaghy & Ikin would have clauses in the contract to look after the Broncos in that regard. The only issue is becoming too comfortable, although from what I have seen so far he would be probably the least likely of our current squad to rest on his performances so far.
