RUMOUR Payne Haas 10yrs

I still think to fix the Broncos and get back to winning premierships your best (and thus highest paid) players have to be in the spine...and how many players can a club afford on around 1M? Like 2 Max?
True, although with Milford gone next season, our highest paid players are Reynolds around $750k, Staggs in the $700k range & Flegler $600k. Roosters have Creighton, Keary & Tedesco all at $1m minimum.

To be honest, I probably wouldn't be upset if the Broncos got back to cheating the cap Roosters style.

Bad deal for a prop.

It seems the club don't know what they are doing and don't want to have to make personnel decisions. Instead just sign players to 10 year deals.

Now, I don't want this to come across as Haas slander, because I love the kid and think he's an absolute weapon, but there's already signs of his impact being nullified by teams.

The lack of tackle breaks & offloads this season is a concern for me. I assume defenses are sending more guys at him and are making an extra effort to lock up the ball, but he'll need to find a way to bring those numbers back up if he wants to be the best prop in the NRL for the next decade.

Footwork before the line would be my suggestion. In his first couple of seasons he would regularly jag before the line and slice right through the defense, I don't see him doing that often this year. He just runs hard and straight (Which may have been the directive from Walters), but I think it hurts the team using him as a battering ram, his footwork is incredible for his size, he needs to use it more.

to add to what you've posted, here are Fox Sports numbers:

HAAS’ CAREER IN NUMBERS (AVERAGE PER GAME)

2018 - 12 minutes, 35 metres, 0.6 tackle busts, 7.7 tackles

2019 - 64 minutes, 175 metres, 4.3 tackle busts, 31.1 tackles

2020 - 71 minutes, 162 metres, 2.4 tackle busts, 35.1 tackles

2021 - 61 minutes, 158 metres, 3.0 tackle busts, 27.0 tackles

so from 2019, when he was an unknown commodity to 2021, when he is regarded as one of the best props in the comp, he hasn't really fallen that far ... he has almost the same output as last season, and that's with averaging 10 minutes less per game

Please don’t ever compare Haas attitude and training ethic to those two lazy ***** ever again. I have no doubt this 10 year contract would be a bargain when it’s all said and done.
Ok Payne steady up. Just think about how much trouble the club got into by signing the last big thing to 4 year contracts. Aren’t we still paying millions to other clubs so these players can play against us? How well did Ben hunt and Milford play once they got their million a year long term deals. There was no hunger and they just went through the motions. So what do the three stooges do at the broncos. Look at 10 year deals. Immediately now the fans will want Haas to give them more and more and the pressure will mount. Why is everyone so sure he has 10 years in him. Those players that typically develop early have trouble maintaining their weight like Cronulla Fifita and end up playing in the suburbs. Who knows how much damage to his young body has occurred over the last couple of years with him trying to rally the team. 80 minutes every week has to take its toll. By all means pay him better but keep him hungry. Bennett had a $500k a season rule for a reason.

If he was going to get complacent he would have done it when he got a 6 year deal worth 500,000 a year at 18 years old in a wooden spoon winning team.
So he ticks that box.

If we were worried about him getting found out from rule changes (common these days) or teams knowing and targeting him... well he has conquered and grown past those barriers
So he ticks that box.

Injuries maybe? He's 21 and does not have an extensive injury history. Never 100% assured of this not happening but he is as low risk as can be.
So he ticks that box.

We can build a club around him and staggs. We just need to surround them with the right people. The problem with lolo and the cowboys isn't that he hasn't or isn't performing (although factoring i n all of the above I think Haas is actually LESS risk), it's bcos they didn't surround him with the right people. They need front foot halves with a decent kicking game, fast backs with a fb who hunts around the ruck, and a fast and instinctive dummy half, then they just need a sold forward pack around him. They actually have the exact opposite of the above haha
..I'm not saying that contract worth should be based on what is around them, but if you are to invest in a marquee player you'd be stupid not too. Same with fifita (although he is lazy and is never worth more then 800,000 And seems to only want to be a highlights reel player), you invest in someone that is fine, build the team around them e.g. spine and players to take advantage of what the provide.

Let’s wait to see what the club does before going overboard either way.

I’m extremely happy we are looking to tie him down well before he is off contract. I think it’ll end up being nowhere 10 years or 10 million dollars, that’s probably where his manager is starting and we are probably starting at 600k. I think we’ll meet in the middle at leas years.

We’ve never seen a prop with more talent than Payne Haas. Let’s be honest here he will retire as the best. His work ethic and attitude his second to none.
I assume you're only old enough to have been watching the game for the last couple years....?

It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out. Here's how I'm seeing it:

1. The club has been making overtures about the type of players they want to build the club around. This proposal signals they want to build the club around Payne. He's the type of player they want.

2. Payne is the type of player who puts in the last minute as he put in the previous 79. He doesn't have an off switch. He never has a bad game. And very frequently he's been the only player who's stood up.

3. In lieu of making him captain, they're giving him this very public acknowledgment and expressing it in a tangible way, that's not just hollow platitudes.

4. So it looks like the club - at the level he interacts with (Walters, Ikin, Donuts) - wants him more than any other player in its history. This is an enormous compliment.

5. But the board has the capacity to reject the offer or quietly insert some kind of performance mechanism that's less risky.

6. Donuts and Ikin will have already run this by Karl Morris and News Ltd in the background. They know how the board will vote.

7. There is another play yet, and it may be the initial offer was a bait and switch. We are absolutely being played here, and it's all to give Payne a pat on the back.

I will not be at all surprised if the board sends the deal back and asks for a shorter term, or there's less risk inherent than there initially appears.

A few trains of thought here...

1. By the time his current contract is meant to end, we should have extra money available from the contracts we're paying for players who have left to play at other clubs (Lodge, Pangai Jnr, McCullough, Ofahengaue?...) which could go towards Haas.

2. If we could spend $1 million on anyone in the comp in the next few years, would we be better off chasing a proper Origin-standard 1/6/9?

3. Is it possible to fit (for example) a Ponga, Reynolds, Haas in the same team?

I’m trying to understand what the upsides are of locking a player in to a super long term deal like this at what would seem to be their peak market value..
What is the risk in extending for four or five years with Haas and meeting with his management 18 months or so before that deal ends to re-assess where both parties stand.. just as they’re doing right now ? 🤷‍♂️

It looks like posturing to me.
