RUMOUR Payne Haas 10yrs

to add to what you've posted, here are Fox Sports numbers:

HAAS’ CAREER IN NUMBERS (AVERAGE PER GAME)

2018 - 12 minutes, 35 metres, 0.6 tackle busts, 7.7 tackles

2019 - 64 minutes, 175 metres, 4.3 tackle busts, 31.1 tackles

2020 - 71 minutes, 162 metres, 2.4 tackle busts, 35.1 tackles

2021 - 61 minutes, 158 metres, 3.0 tackle busts, 27.0 tackles

so from 2019, when he was an unknown commodity to 2021, when he is regarded as one of the best props in the comp, he hasn't really fallen that far ... he has almost the same output as last season, and that's with averaging 10 minutes less per game
For all those who have been bagging Walters mercilessly, these numbers indicate to me that he is at least starting to find the perfect balance between giving Haas enough time without overworking him.

In a season where we’ve again been floating around the wooden spoon end, Walters has resisted the urge to overplay the bloke (like his predecessor did) who has proven he is more than capable of playing 80 every week.

Walters definitely deserves kudos for this.

Yeah best to wait until he is off contract before trying to re-sign him, that’s never bitten us in the ass.
I don't think anyone has even suggested such a thing.....re waiting until he is off contract.

A big difference between a 2-3 yr deal and a 10 yr one. How about at the end of the 2 yr period....on a 3 yr deal, we chat about the future?

I really like Payne Haas and everything he has to offer, but........
a 10 yr deal is a dumb move IMO.

I assume you're only old enough to have been watching the game for the last couple years....?
Think about what I said, Talent and genetics no one is up there with Haas and I mean that. And I don’t think I’m wrong in saying that. He has all the tools to be the best prop this game has ever seen.

He is also human and is one serious injury away from retirement like every other player.
This applies to some more than others.
For example, Haas has had no significant injuries considering the immense output of his playstyle.
Then you look at Tommy Turbo who is a brilliant player but has the hammy's of an 80 year old.

Both genetically blessed, and gifted in their own way, but if i had to bet the house on who would get injured next, it wouldn't be Haas.

Guaranteed Haas gets injured next games thank you very much

It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out. Here's how I'm seeing it:

1. The club has been making overtures about the type of players they want to build the club around. This proposal signals they want to build the club around Payne. He's the type of player they want.

2. Payne is the type of player who puts in the last minute as he put in the previous 79. He doesn't have an off switch. He never has a bad game. And very frequently he's been the only player who's stood up.

3. In lieu of making him captain, they're giving him this very public acknowledgment and expressing it in a tangible way, that's not just hollow platitudes.

4. So it looks like the club - at the level he interacts with (Walters, Ikin, Donuts) - wants him more than any other player in its history. This is an enormous compliment.

5. But the board has the capacity to reject the offer or quietly insert some kind of performance mechanism that's less risky.

6. Donuts and Ikin will have already run this by Karl Morris and News Ltd in the background. They know how the board will vote.

7. There is another play yet, and it may be the initial offer was a bait and switch. We are absolutely being played here, and it's all to give Payne a pat on the back.

I will not be at all surprised if the board sends the deal back and asks for a shorter term, or there's less risk inherent than there initially appears.
The more I think about the more I think there is a possibility this 1mil for 10 years has been leaked to the media purely for the purpose of showing other clubs there not touching him, giving payne the pat on the back he deserves and showing him he's valued and wanted by the club.
There would be talks with management going on still. they wouldn't come out and say we're signing payne for a long contract at 700k because other clubs will be like we can offer him more.
Also the sponsorship deals payne could pick up at the broncos would be pretty big aswell compared to other clubs

If DD and Ikin are as switched on as i (think) they are, id not be at all suprised as part of the contract renegotiation the short-medium term plans for the roster would have been spelt out, how the club intends to pay for these roster changes and how Payne fits into this.

This is how i would do it. Paying him the world means precluding us from building a compettive team around him makes no long term sense...

His upgrade is meant to align WITH the continual imporvement of the squad, not set it back

The only problem with making a big show of offering him a ten year deal, and the board making them scale it back, is it might erode trust in future deals and make Donuts look weak.

At some point they're going to have to plan against the threat of a second Brisbane team. They won't want Payne being the cornerstone of that.

A good spine can make cheap forwards and outside backs into a champion team, while elite forwards definitely help, they’ll never make a bad spine into a Grand Final threat.
So he is signed until 2024 and nobody else can pay him more during this contract period but we are going to double his pay and then give him 5 more years at that money. Its madness whether he is worth it or not.

Ok...thats not quite what you were saying earlier IMO.
Yes I agree

however........he does have holes in his game right now, that he needs to work on IF he is going to be better than Beetson....for example.

I'm most happy that it would appear the club has initiated discussions to extend and upgrade Haas... and they have realised they need to get in and sort it out early.

10yr at $10m seems a bit like a headline rather than a legitimate deal that would be on the table.... seems a bit too coincidental "let's exceed Lolo's contract to show that he's the best forward in the game"

I would say the discussions to extend have initiated only a few weeks ago, given there was the rumour that Haas was unhappy at being underpaid (i.e. leak from the player manager), and now we have a supposed $10m deal on the table (i.e. grand standing from someone).

He's off contract in 2025, so 3yrs remaining, but the mention of a 10yr deal suggests they are in talks about a long long term deal rather than some 2-3yr extension.

I would be happy if the deal ended up being 7yr at $900-$1m.

That would be a 4yr extension and gives him a big pay bump.. $900k also makes him the highest paid prop in the game, which I think is a warranted accolade.

I could wheel off half a dozen players currently on a mill a year who at Haas's currently contract would be still be getting overs

We've been so bad for so long but there's been one constant, Payne fucking Haas.

Get it done

He'd get more than 1m on his next deal a year, the only way we can have him at a mill is with long-term job security, he blows every other forward out of the water. Only the Penrith prop comes close.

The club knows it too, if you were ever going throw everything you had at a bloke to dominate the middle third of the field for 60 minutes per game minimum, this is the guy you'd want. Not some downhill skier like David Fifita. It's basically a situation where Payne can dictate terms to the people making the decisions, not an ideal situation but he's got all the pull in this situation.

I also read 10 other clubs have shown interest, how is that even allowed? I wish the NRL would clamp down on this, it's the one way clubs can secure the players they develop by making sure up to a set period that other clubs simply can't even think about having a chat to his manager.

because clubs can talk to players any time they want.
