RUMOUR Payne Haas 10yrs

I also read 10 other clubs have shown interest, how is that even allowed? I wish the NRL would clamp down on this, it's the one way clubs can secure the players they develop by making sure up to a set period that other clubs simply can't even think about having a chat to his manager.
What @Foordy said, which became a known thing following the Pangai-Tigers event.

Clubs can talk to whoever they want, whenever they want, but only about years following the end of their current contract ie 2025 and beyond for Haas

If you're a gun player and you know there are 10 teams looking for your signature, are you going to sign an extension well in advance or let them go into battle throwing as much cash as they can at you to get you to sign.

I know what I'd be doing

There’s two types of players. I don’t begrudge players signing for money, so long they’re honest about it.

Others are happy to stay with a club forever, regardless of the money.

I hope Payne is the latter

5 year contract would be fine, 10 is a bit stupid.

He isn't in a creative position so his role is more simple and he does that extremely well, if the salary cap raises while he is on that contract your effectively getting better value each time it does.

The Cows offered Taumololo a identical deal which he took and there's no doubting the quality of him as a forward I bet they wish they could afford to bring in a genuine star playmaker to make the most of his go forward

They basically won a premiership with that combination

because clubs can talk to players any time they want.
A joke really, this is the definition of tampering, why it goes on without being punished is beyond me. It creates an obvious distraction and an unstable work environment.

You mention a players long lost distant cousin in the NBA or NFL and your slapped with a massive fine.

This is how decisions are made at NRL HQ.

The only way a 10 year contract would be worth the risk is if you knew you where getting a big Salary cap rise in that time and not have him on a wage rise when it happens, I would be more inclined to stick to a 5 year contract though.

His position is a simple one and he does it at a very high level Unless he gets a really bad run of injuries he would live up to his current standards for atleast most of his 20s.

I'd rather Broncos offer Harry Grant $1m a season instead of Haas. That sort of money belongs to a game changing spine player not a forward.
Harry's biggest question mark is how often will he actually be on the field, injury seems to be a problem for him, investing $1M on him currently would be pretty risky.

I dont see how 10m over 10 years works for the broncos.

I mean its fine for now, and it might work out ok, but in all likelihood you end up paying overs for a middle forward for 4-7 years of the contract... and its not like hes a bargain for the first three.

honestly the timing of contracts are very important - look at us with jarrod croker - it was a bad extension at the time and it is a very bad deal now.

You guys should have learned from us with Boyd.

I actually want to go to our website these days, we are no longer an embarrassment in that department. This kind of media relation / creativity has been big in the AFL for a long time, I wonder if Donuts has learned that in his time with the Lions and in Melbourne. The Lions especially are excellent with their media stuff.
