NEWS Haas gets pay bump, long term deal in holding pattern

News LTD is reporting the Broncos board will formally approve a 3 year extension to Payne Haas' existing contract to tie him up for another 6 years. Money not mentioned, but there is talk of grooming him for future captaincy. The deal appears to be done, but won't be formally announced until after the season. It will be the longest contract in the Broncos' 33 year history.

Walters:

“Payne is a natural leader, not so much with his words but his actions. He is never far off the ball whether it’s attack or defence. When you are building a premiership team, you need middle forwards like Payne Haas. The Storm have Jesse Bromwich. The Roosters have Jared Waerea-Hargreaves. Every top team has a dominant prop."

“Payne is a remarkable forward, he has a great work ethic. He wants to win at all costs and that’s what we need throughout the whole club.”

Ikin:

“Payne is a special player. He is a powerhouse, he leads from the front on the field in one of the toughest positions you can play in a game. He brings his best to every training session and every match. He is world class. He is the guy others in the club look to. He does it with his leadership and it’s based on actions. He performs with great humility."

“Payne has this view on the world where he is committed to doing things for others, he is very cognisant of the fact he is part of a team. As single-minded as you need to be to succeed in the front row, Payne has this great affinity for his teammates and they really recognise that. It is innate in Payne. He is leading for others. It‘s not just all about him. He has some magnificent traits as a leader.”

Greg Alexander:

“Having seen him in the NSW set-up, I’ve seen Payne’s attitude. When you sign someone for a long time, you have to consider will they handle things emotionally and does it matter how much they are paid from year to year? The player’s performances would have to stay consistent and I see that in Payne. It wouldn’t matter how much he was paid or how long for, I know Payne would do the job week in, week out.”

News Corp is "revealing" the Broncos quietly "rubber-stamped a mid-season pay rise" to Payne Haas of $200k back in April bumping his salary to $750k. This makes him currently the highest paid forward at the club. Once Mudfrog hops away, Haas and Reynolds will be the club's two richest players.

Ben Ikin:

“We have no concerns from our end with Payne Haas leaving the club. If Payne Haas is an unhappy player playing the way he currently is, I’d like to see his form when he is happy. We rate him very highly, he is an important part of our present and our future and we will do what we need to do to ensure he feels that and remains committed to the Broncos beyond his current contract."

“I am confident Payne will stay. Payne is a huge part of our planning, he is the guy we plan to build the team around, he knows that and we know that. It’s constantly communicated to him. We are very considerate of what the player wants. If someone of Payne’s quality wants to look at his future beyond this current contract, of course we will have that conversation with him."

“There is no time pressure on when we do a new deal for Payne. He is contracted until the end of 2024, so we don’t have to do this as a matter of urgency, but we will move forward with Payne at a rate that he feels comfortable with. Payne values the Broncos, he has stated it publicly and privately, he loves the club and that shows up every time he takes to the training paddock and wears the Broncos jersey week to week.”

Good communication from the club.

Once again, I'm not buying Weedler's version of events. He's just shit stirring for clicks.

Thanks bro. The Broncos just need to hold firm on this. Obviously somebody is agitating to get Payne off side with the Broncs.

Conspiracy here is we upgrade him and then we start hearing he is unhappy. Now all that a slimy club like the Roosters has to do is come in and say we will take an underperforming Payne for 400k and all you have to do is pick up the change on that 750k upgrade.

The club must hold out on the contract. It sounds like our only leverage is now gone. He either has to enjoy playing here and re-sign for an honest number in three years or we have nearly a million sitting in reserve grade. I really doubt Payne could choose to play poorly to get out of a contract, so hopefully we can just make him happy and all this goes away.

Not sure what changed when Kevvie arrived but Badel seems to care more about being reliable this season than bigging himself with scoops. I know everyone hates me saying this but he's been pretty bankable. As reliable as you can be reporting on characters like Kevvie who change their mind at a whim.

Weidler, on the other hand, is a ****. It's always about him. He just wants your attention.

When Dobbo and Badel are on the same page, you know you're getting it from the club. I'm satisfied Payne isn't going to **** off anywhere else in a hurry. The details, well, they're yet to come.

Why would a club sign a player on a long term contract? The Broncos appear to have only recently worked this out, let's hope a sensible decision is reached here. No player is bigger than the club.

If it's true that Haas is on $750k, moving up to $850k by the end of the contract, he's already in the top 3 or 4 highest paid props in the game.

If (and I stress if) he's unhappy with that plus whatever pay bump we're set to offer him, he can bugger off.

If Payne wants to be a future captain of this club I really think he needs to come out and say something doesn't need to hold a press conference or anything just something as simple as a Instagram post doesn't even need to address the issue something as simple as "love this club or excited for times ahead at this club" just something to end the circus because the only person who can stop the speculation is Payne.. stand up and be a leader

I don't remember who said it here but they're spot on, if Haas was unhappy he wouldn't be playing like the best prop in the game, you just don't play as well as he does when you're pissed off with your employer.
That was Ben Ikin, 4 posts above:

So basically what the story is or was prior to the ikin interview "broncos sign player on incredibly smart and good value deal". But because its the bronco's its a stupid deal and its wrong to underpay the guy so much.

However the whole storm and roosters team sign for "incredibly smart and good value deals" and its a brilliant move and shows how far ahead of other clubs they are.

You just wait until Selwyn Cobbo lights the nrl up next year and Brisbane are "at risk of losing another young start as they refuse to open their checkbook". Meanwhile "broncos salary cap disaster as ageing undersized goal kicking half chews up 1 million dollars a year of cap space". Throw in a generic line about Brisbane refusing to pay 1.2 million a year for "superstar Fifita who scores 5 tries against worst defensive side in history in a match that means shit all" and you are all set.

I reckon i coild script the majority of next year's headlines right now.

Why aren't Harry Grant and B. Smith causing drama, they're 3x underpaid compared to Haas. I wonder why they're so happy.
