2014 Halves Pairing

Another week, another new genius halves pairing/ spine formation. How many times have we done this now?

Last year it was every week, wasn't it? How did that end up. Oh, yeah, we finished fifth....fifth LAST.

lol, at the idea of using Glenn to "protect" Barba. Barba is a better defender than Glenn. Look at the missed tackle stats year-on-year trends. Oppositions will just run plays at that, all day long.

Only solution is a clean out of White, Griffin, Glenn, Gillett, Hoffman etc. Bring in Bennett, Boyd, Mullen, Scott, Smith etc.

The only LOL here is at your comment.
What do you know about recruiting? The reason we are in dire need of playmakers now is because of the lack of recruiting junior playmakers prior to 2010 not on White or Griffins watch.
I would say that our junior recruitment since 2010 has been top notch but unfortunately they will most likely not be ready until 2016.
If i didnt know any better i would say you are just on here to bait us

FWIW, hook hasn't be quoted as planning to play Barba at 5/8. It seems to have been an assumption from the media to sell papers.

i came here again to post this. CM have just used guesswork to come up with the assumption that barba will be the 6. griffin acknowledged strasser was solid but has work to do - the fact he was solid is enough for me, what else did they expect?

barba at 6 at the 9s may well occur but its the 9s, you probably want him getting his hands on the ball as much as possible with the reduced amount of players on the field.

give strasser a full game at 6 this weekend at wynum. see how he goes.

One thing stands out with all this discussion, it's bloody nice to be able to talk about having Barba in our squad, with the promise of Milford for next year.

I don't want to see us dulling the sharp point of the weapon that is Barba at Fullback by playing him at 5/8, but then I'm always happy to be proven wrong.

I really don't like the idea of Griffin trying to save his own arse by (yet again) playing players out of position to the detriment of these player's game. So selfish, it weakens the future of the team. It's almost like a vicious disease that has ravaged us for the past few years.

But for Griffin to save his own ass, we would have to be successful on the field ... which would mean his risk of moving players to a new position would have been successful.

Haven't seen anyone raise the issue of having at Barba at 6 meaning Hoffman at 1.

Barba at five eighth is not really out of position. It's not like he'd have to be converted to a five-eighth. He was a five-eighth who was converted to a fullback three years ago. And I don't think his attacking prowess would necessarily be dulled at 6. 2010 was his last year as a half in the NRL - he played 21 games in the halves, though the majority of them were off the bench, and scored 15 tries in a team that finished 13th on the ladder. He'll score points no matter where we play him.

Spot on!

Having Hoffy at custodian, and Barba in a position he hasn't played for a while is weakening 2 positions for the gamble of strengthening 1:
- We take our best winger away
- We take our best fullback away
- We possibly improve the 5/8 position, although the large amount of tackling he will be made to do, will probably seriously limit Barba's effectiveness.

Give Strasser, Nikorima, Cullen, etc... a serious go, and let Macca, Hunt and Barba steer us around the park while the new kid gets used to the NRL.

I thought Broncos should have signed Cody Walker instead of Strasser. I watched a few games of his and I thought he was a much better option than Strasser.

And it moves Maranta closer to the wing spot. Which weakens the whole team.

Lets just play Gillett at 6 then, no need to risk a newbie who can't tackle and has no experience and won't be there when Milford arrives.

We NEED Barba at 1, running support off Parker, Glenn and Gillett offloads and running the second man play close to our line.

Whoever wears the 6 will have a very simple role. Get deep and pass to Barba on the second man play very early. He will score the points for us.

Strasser showed a few nice long ball passes to meet that criteria.

Hunt will take care of the kicking game.

Defence is an unknown but no worse than Kahu or Barba for that matter.

Anything that takes Hoffman away from the wing and places him at fullback is a bad move imo, unless we have no one else to put at FB of course.

Maranta can play fullback... :shot:

Provided he gets the opportunity, I'm expecting Walker to be rookie of the year. If they can keep Walker and Hampton, Storm will have half of their post "big three" era spine looking promising.

It seems like all the options we have suck. Seems like Strasser needs some good games in the trials to get a gig.

Don't be surprised to see Hoffman with the 6 on his back if Kahu is out.....
Thaiday at 13 playing on an edge
Parker at Prop playing middle third
Gillett playing on an edge

Gillette and Thaidays role will be to purely tip on to the centre or Barba out the back. Hoffman operating on the opposite side of the field as a ball runner. Limited options but thats what I have heard

parker plays in the middle anyway. the number is irrelevant since both props and 13 generally play in the middle third.

gillet and thaiday were always going to be your "edge" backrowers, and always have been, apart from when griffin sticks thaiday in the middle which we all know is stupid.
