Firstly, since we were actively chasing Ash Taylor until the end of October 2017, that takes care of 95% of your list, leaving just Maloney, Pearce and Cronk (who you forgot about)....

Although both Maloney and Pearce, would have been excellent options, they didn't leave their clubs until half way through the pre-season, after we had used the money we had set aside for a halfback to upgrade the likes of Oates, McGuire, Gillett etc. both of these players would also be too expensive (likely pushing the $1m a season mark, and we already had our million dollar half.
