2024 pre-season discussion: Pre-season Premiers

Tyreece Tait - he's been named in the Qld u-19 squad at the Roosters. Was he with us? If so, when did they poach him?

They didn’t Broncos released him end of the year. He didn’t have a great attitude and needed a change.

Attitude to training or something else? I vaguely remember hearing some hype about him.

So @1910 says Broncs' didn't stand in his way, the Mole says we are fuming we let him go. Two very different takes and given the Mole's track record...I'm not going with him.
Not picking sides, but we're still long at least one outside back.

Annersley has met with coaches, and sent officials to training, to discuss the forthcoming season:

“Coaches have been pushing the envelope more and more so. So it’s best to reset the standards now in training rather than on the field during matches. These are not rule changes but rather shifts in emphasis. "
“We are doing a reset, this is not a clamp down. The reason we are doing it now and the reason we have had a meeting with the coaches is we want them to fix these issues in training so that when we get to match day we don’t have to worry about it. There isn’t a blitz. If the coaches prepare their teams on this basis then they won’t have any concerns. It’s not our objective to start and stop the game and blowing penalties all over the field."
“There has always been a downtown rule but we need to bring attention back to it. Now a player from the kicker’s team cannot advance until the point where the ball goes over their head. They have to stay at least level with the ruck until then. In recent years when they knew their team was going to kick the ball they would tear down the field.”
The shift in focus includes:

* Removing ruck sleepers who keep the markers out of play
* No driving your teammate forward like a rugby-maul
* Relaxing restrictions on deliberate knock-ons
* Protecting players who jump to retrieve a bouncing ball
* Putting players on notice who lift the leg of an attacker who is already being held up by defenders.
* Greater emphasis on keeping the 10 metres and ruck compliance

* Removing ruck sleepers who keep the markers out of play
I'll believe it when I see it. They've been threatening this for eight seasons now, ever since teams would blatantly do it around Golden Point and it's rarely been penalised since.

* No driving your teammate forward like a rugby-maul
Thank god. It's Rugby LEAGUE, if they let that go on, you're just asking the game to turn into Union. It was a bad look when players were being driven 20m+ by their team mates when they had all but been held a second prior.
* Relaxing restrictions on deliberate knock-ons
So teams can just spike the ball? Aren't we trying to make the game more competitive? I don't understand legitimising such a cynical option.

* Protecting players who jump to retrieve a bouncing ball
This is going to be fun when this resurfaces once in a blue moon. Either the penalty will be too harsh, or not harsh enough. Surprised this is the only rule getting a run, what about chasing after a ball too aggressively? Is that still a penalty?
* Greater emphasis on keeping the 10 metres and ruck compliance
So more penalties in the first month, then hardly any.

So no crackdown on attacking players interfering with defenders in the ruck or making a tackle 🤔🤔

Maybe they'll start in 2025 when Luai moves on from Penrith.

Also what is this bullshit about protecting players going for a bouncing ball??

The rules are already there (as usual) if they're put in a dangerous position it's a penalty... just because the moron completely missed it on Garrick last year doesnt mean they need to change the fucking rules!!

Yeah the second one is the Garrick incident last year that the ref stuffed up.

He was put in a dangerous position and I think he ended up with a fracture in his back.

There was talk last year that they might change the rule to have it as tackled in the air... even if the ball has bounced... but they dont need to because the rule is already there about putting a player in a dangerous position.
