Andrew Johns named eighth immortal

Johns the player is probably worthy of immortal status but not ahead of his time. He has clearly been given the accolade ahead of his time IMO. It is a crappy award anyway. The NRL needs a true hall of fame not some fake Immortals run by a magazine.

thats the real question that hasnt been asked isnt it? why did it have to only be one? is there a rule saying they can only induct one player per 5 years or whatever it is? if there is, its gonna be something stupid like 100 years before players like Slater/Smith/Thurston/Lockyer get in.

Locky and Smith will be there. Not sure that Slater and Thurston are at THAT level, which seems to be the case for Mal as well. Mail has been nominated for induction for the last 3 times they've done it, so I'm not sure he'll ever get there, which makes me think they reckon he's at the level below immortal status.

If Langer isn't even nominated then Thurston is no hope.

I'm pretty sure Joey just liked his crack and heroine? To the best of my couldn't give a shit about his career recollection, he never actually took PED's.
he loves or loved eccies. cookie muncher . booze . heaps of booze

norm provan . mal maninga before joey johns*
little alfie is a legend

May as well give Lance his tours back.

Difference being that Armstrong's drugs were performance enhancing... I'd love to see Joey playing a game with a gutful of pingers.

I'm tipping we've seen him play plenty of games on pingers

Today I learned that it's not actually judged on off field stuff, and only judged on their playing careers...in which case it makes sense, Johns was definitely a superior player.

Oh, goodness me. With someone as intelligent as you, I thought you would've known this from the beginning.

Forgive my arrogance.

I always thought it was based on their entire service (ie. coaching and off field stuff) to Rugby League until today.

I thought it was only on field right from the start. Off-field had nothing to do with it.

Remember that the drugs he was on was estacy not steriods so he wasn't a drug cheat. The only thing he achieved that Mal didn't (beside from the dally m's) was winning an Origin series as captain. Congrats to Joey

We don't know that for sure. (kicks the broom away from the carpet)

He was only drug tested 17 times in his career.

Estacy is an illegal drug, so that makes him a drug cheat. IMO

I don't care if it was performance enhancing or not, I care that he took an illegal substance while an elite athlete and it seems to have been ignored completely. I also care about the racial comments he is said to have made while a member of the NSW coaching staff.

I care that it appears to be acceptable to be a complete and utter **** head off the field and still be rewarded. I care that the lesson shown here to my kids is that as long as you play really good football, You can get away with anything you want off field. I don't want that lesson being portrayed.

Amphetamines are classified as PEDs, otherwise players would down packets of sudafed before games with no repercussions.

This.

There is absolutely no other argument.

Of course there is...just not the Nashy version of everything....as if you know better than me..such cheek...my opinion is so much more important than yours Nashy lol

What a laugh..I mean ,really...an elite athlete took an illegal drug...oh my God ...how could that of happened...we all know elite athletes are accountable to the highest of high standards...above all others in society...lol....higher than church leaders, role models to the universe, athleticism bestowing as it does some higher moral plane, some mysterious barely understood super power and anyone, given the ability to hit or kick a ball gets a dose of superiority that we mere mortals will never possess...

when are you people going to understand that athletes are given this supposed higher accountability because you fawn over them because they can play a sport at some level you will never approach...if they are role models it's your dam fault for lionizing them

You're mental mate. He tooks drugs through his playing career. How is that EVER right?

Deadset, what is this ****ing world coming to when people think hard drugs are something to not worry about.

No Nashy.it's not me who has the problem...and it's why people like me would get the gig of running the country long before knee jerkers such as your self...you cannot separate that which is important from that which is not. Your bias stops you from understanding what is important. You have this strange view that what you think is totally correct, all the time whereas I'm prepared to be wrong about things. I accept both sides of the coin. I never said drugs are okay although they are used widely in society, both legally and otherwise. This has been the case since time began for us.

A free society is one based on the principle that we are free to make choices......and your version is as close to the Taliban style as it can be and still exist in a democratic society.

I remember the hysteria on this site when Langer got done for DD...the idiots called for some extreme punishments, really extreme. So far from what was correctly given out to him. I remember the stupid things written because some players got a head job from Miss fellatio Hornblower in a night club...ridiculous statements all round....
