Andrew Johns named eighth immortal

I'm confused too draggx. On one hand he seems to be saying that it's fine Johns is lauded as a hero with "Immortality", but on the other hand that he shouldn't be a hero because he's just a nuff nuff footballer who popped too much E... I'm not sure he knows what he thinks.

Porthoz, you wrote 'Your premise that someone should be praised and rewarded for having talent, regardless of his behavior off the field, is morally reprehensible'...........wtf...when did I write that, or even infer that ????

Here:
Actually I totally agree about the message sent that if you play well and are a total f..kup off the field you can still have your cake and eat it.

By the way, this contradicts most of what you write next, especially this line: "I'll say it once more. I just want people treated equally and with total disregard for their sporting prowess. Hardly an anarchist point of view."

Truly, talk about drawing a long bow. Anarchists indeed !! That I should want all people treated as I would like myself to be treated is so offensive to you. How noble of you Porthoz you filthy druggo. You should be held up to ridicule for your reprehensible drug use. Freely admitting to the same behaviors as Johns and then, having the temerity to justify it because you 'worked hard'..lol.....

No,I don't actually think you are a filthy druggo and low life but in all honesty how can you throw mud ????

The elite athlete does not embody the goals of most people in actual fact, far from it. Most peoples goal is firstly to be happy, then to make others happy(and by extension,loved/liked) to be successful generally(not specifically in the narrow field of sport) and hopefully pass on their genes through their children. They are the most common goals of people throughout the world. The fact that so many get fixated on elite athletes is a sad indictment of a society that is misguided. An elite athlete generally has a very narrow set of skills honed to perfection for use in a very narrow and fixed set of parameters.

There are many people who are worthy of admiration and I'd point to someone, now departed, as a much greater role model. He was Fred Hollows. Worshiping someone who, for a very short space of time can play a sport very well is close to crazy. Expecting them to behave differently to all other humans, in every other field that humans enter, is nuts.

I'll say it once more. I just want people treated equally and with total disregard for their sporting prowess. Hardly an anarchist point of view.
Yeah, right... It's the majority of us or this society that is misguided, not at all an anarchist point of view! :001_rolleyes:

The rest of your reply makes me believe that you have lost touch with reality, or have forgotten about what it is that makes you tick as a child or teenager, because those are the ones we want to set the examples for. I dare say that very few of us didn't have a "childhood hero" we would love to emulate. This may not necessarily be a sports person, but it will most definitely be someone who will in many ways shape your personality. Of course, as we grow up and mature, the goals you mention become as important as the goal you set for yourself to achieve in your career, regardless of what that career may be.

I don't expect elite athletes to behave differently from other humans, but I do expect their behavior to be rewarded accordingly.
Giving Johns the immortal status is akin to telling our youth that as long as you can kick a ball better than most, your behavior off the field will be overlooked...

And again, I am not an apologist that Johns should be held to ridicule either. Using extreme examples to support your point of view is a sign of desperation in a debate.

He has contradicted himself so many times that I am more than confused. At the end of the day my opinion is regardless of his on field exploits rewarding his habitual drug use with immortal status is disgraceful and sends a terrible message to kids. In my opinion he should never have even been eligible for immortal status and the fact that he is there over the likes of meninga, Lazarus Alfie and many others is deplorable, but sadly is what I have come to expect from the NRL

As far as I'm aware his employers did not know he was using drugs on occasion so that is a silly argument ...he could hardly have been treated differently as nobody knew.

I am almost certain it was known by some of Knights Doctors and Staff knew what Johns was up to.

Fact is, leaving the game's so-called highest honour in the hands of journalists, and specifically a crappy magazine, is where things went wrong. The immortals should never have become such a big concept. It's akin to a magazine player of the year award...it's no more meaningful than our own forum Hall of Fame.

What is wrong with you lot..are you blind Coxy...????????this what I wrote above

{I do not regard him as a hero nor do I think he deserves the accolade 'immortal'. My view is he did not do enough on the field for that honour} how is that unclear ??????

okay smart arses..write down, quote the two lines that are contradictory....ffs..read the words I write not your version of them.

buckingbeads..almost certain is not enough....do you know or not..if not then wtf

You're saying he didn't do enough on the field. Yes I agree, but my point is that off field stuff and contribution to the game beyond playing should be a factor in honours like this.

That's where you seem to differ. Why? Do you not acknowledge that honour and contribution to a sport involves more than the individual's playing ability?

buckingbeads..almost certain is not enough....do you know or not..if not then wtf

Why not?? It is just as likely the Knights officials have lied to cover it up as it is likely that they had no clue. If I recall correctly it was reported that Knights officials knew about Johns taking party drugs.

There may come a time in the future when your child is accused of a crime, a crime perhaps of which they were innocent...will you stick up for the rights of the ill informed to stand on the sidelines yelling accusations and calling your child names......like say, rapist, murderer, killer Or will you scream, that is unfair and unjust ??and of course we both know the answer.

I'm actually confused as to why you're comparing a child being innocent of something to a high profile footy player being guilty of something :|

oh Porthoz...so so dumb a mistake on your part. Read the posts above the ones you quoted from...I was agreeing that the message being sent out was that you could have your cake and eat it... NOT THAT THE MESSAGE WAS CORRECT DUMBASS...

talk about getting it wrong...so you go off on a rant at me because all along you had misunderstood what was obvious.

Agree Coxy !! On two counts he should not have been given an honour. That said ,the one for immortal status was for on field and I don't think he did enough at that level. No contradiction yet is there ??? I actually do not think Johns is an example for anyone. I do regard his recreational drug use as minor, routine, run of the mill stuff. been done a million times before and will be for the foreseeable future.

Wayne Bennett on Andrew Johns' drug problem in his book Man in the Mirror

Andrew's was the worst kept secret in rugby league. I don't think anybody close to the game didn't have at least a hint of what was happening.

no draggx..no comparison but Coxy knows EXACTLY what I mean. You don't throw shit when you don't know for absolute certain. In other words you DO NOT ACCUSE people for wrongdoing unless you absolutely know they have sinned.

He 'got it wrong' because he read it the way you wrote it. For someone that prowls around these forums like a psychotic English professor searching for grammatical errors, you sure have a confusing style of writing.

Fair enough Big Pete so who ,in that case is culpable. Should we say then if Wayne Bennett knew why did he not speak up.....??is he not guilty if he knew ??? as should all of those who knew this 'secret' ??? my previous post covers that..just because you suspect does not give you the right to act and that includes his EMPLOYERS

LOL..yeah right, confusing because he took the wrong way..stop casting dispersions lol

Who knew a family member of Andrew Johns was lurking on the forums?? The way Matthew Johns was treated compared to his brother is also another thing I find astounding.
