Barba vs Boyd

Oh the problems we have. Do we stick with a Dally M winning fullback, or do we go with a representative, Clive Churchill medal winning fullback?

The way some of you are carrying on is hilarious. These are first world problems guys...

If we sign Boyd, I'll feel for Barba, but he has to carry some of the blame. He is able to play far better than he has for us and if he makes way for an international player of the calibre of Boyd, well he can't really hold the world to blame.

I think he'd make an excellent bench impact / utility player, in the mould of a Sean Berrigan or a John Plath, where he can play fullback, halves and possibly back-up hooker as needed.

I bet half the teams in the comp wish they had the sort of "problems" we have...

Our only real problem as Wayne has mentioned is the current lack of a dominant prop. If we can find one, then I'll be very happy with the Broncs roster and I think we all should be...

Can someone please point me to the source of this news about "Barba being shopped around and no one wanting him"? Seems that an unfounded rumour launched here without any verification, is being taken as fact a bit too easily...

Potentially, Barba is ten times the fullback Boyd will ever be.
That line about Boyd being the potentially better fullback at the club is exactly why I don't believe Wayne can be objective about Darius. If this was coming from anyone but Wayne Bennett, people would just laugh and dismiss it as idiotic.

It's also funny to read that we suddenly will have too much flair in the spine and need a "solid" player from the back.
It is in the Courier Mail again today. Not the first time BTW
In the Pete Badel exclusive. Barba's Broncos future in the balance.

Rumours are rarely launched here without basis. Certainly the source is sometimes not credible

The concern about to much flair has been around for a long time and much before Bennett said it. When we signed Milford most people outside the Broncos questioned why or why we would keep barba because the are too similar.

As i said in another thread I will post the sources for the barba being shopped aRound and it's not just dobbo when I can.

Some people believe darius is a better player than barba. People are allowed to have different opinions about players abe that doesn't make their opinions idiotic.

I'm glad that you find it funny to read someone else's opinion, really makes it feel worthwhile contributing to a thread.

Dobbo from Triple M, he has some inside information, it's rarely 100% accurate but.

so basically that means we haven't shopped Barba around and want to keep him...

I do like the attitude from Barba, i keep reading how he wants to finish his career here and will play where he is needed

Well I doubt we're shopping Barba without Boyd's contract written in ink.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if the Titans contact us about giving them Barba's contract, especially once we've signed Boyd (They supposedly chased Karmichael and are interested in Boyd, if they miss out on both, and Hoffman heads to Warriors / Raiders / Bulldogs, there's no other good Fullbacks on the market for quite a while)

Keeps Barba in SEQ, close to his family, gives the Titans a better Fullback than Zillman, with plenty of upside... Gives us some more cap room to sign Boyd and extend Hunt & McGuire.

A win for everyone in my books..

That leaves Barba walking a tightrope at the Broncos. It is understood the Maroons hopeful has been quietly shopped around by the Broncos, but NRL rivals have baulked at picking up the final two years of Barba’s Brisbane deal.

The rest of that article's quotes by both Barba and Bennett contradict that line, so it's nothing but speculation from the journo... yet it's being taken as gospel.
broncos4life, stop acting so butthurt, you've done far worse than laugh at people's opinions... :thefinger:

I don't get this notion about Boyd being so solid. Other than his bomb catching ability, he's a below average defender, both positional and tackling wise, and in attack, what else besides the sweeping second man play can he do?
When you add everything up, Hoffman is probably better value than him.

what else besides the sweeping second man play can he do?

Well.. he can pass the ball.. for one, Hoffman can't.. He has a surprisingly decent short kicking game as well, probably better than Hoffman's extremely limited kicking game. They have similar running games, similar speed, similar under the high ball..

The difference you ask? Boyd wants to be here, Hoffman doesn't. And considering Hoffman wants an upgraded contract and Boyd will probably come on a back-ended deal, I don't really see how the Hoff would be better value.

It doesn't really matter though Port.....Bennett sounded pretty sure that he wanted Boyd at FB.

Will Boyd come to Brisbane? I can't see why not. He's pretty well shit the bed at the Knights, they have said they won't stand in his way whatever he chooses to do. Plus the added history of the Bennet/Boyd relationship. It's a done deal afaic.

WB will be doing everything he can to get the Titans interested in Barba. IMO

I have seen three different sources saying he is being shopped around and while all three might not be credible when you put them together you get smoke which generally means fire

End of the day Bennett is there to win so he will pick the players he thinks can do it for him. Right or Wrong

Pretty sure Hoffman will be very happy to stay if he gets the fullback spot.
Boyd can't take a back ended deal, his contract has to be at least equal to the one at Newcastle.

Boyd does have an edge over Hoffman, but he's not even close to be as good defensively. Regardless, neither holds a candle to Barba.

That last sentence is an exaggeration
