Barba vs Boyd

Boyd was great in 2013

Boyd was good for a few weeks in 2013 ... but most of the season he was average.

except when he was playing on the wing in the rep sides ... and that is the only position he should play. but unfortunately if he comes here, he will be in the spine and we will have another Hoffman on our hands (only not as good defensively)

people on here wanted Hoffman out of the spine because of his lack of play making ... but some people are also happy for Boyd to be our full back, when he is also shit in the play making department

Still think Hodges in attack and then Kahu or Maranta or whatever in defence is the way to go (since Milford is no chance). I'm still remembering Hodges against the Cowboys, if it wasn't for Tariq Sims, I think he would have single handedly beaten them.

Re: [RUMOUR] Ben Barba to Cronulla

probably because it doesn't suit their agenda to mention it.

He had a very good season, it wasn't just a few games

Re: [RUMOUR] Ben Barba to Cronulla

Some people are still caught in 2012 time trap. It's 2015 next year ffs

I still thinks it's possible to have both Barba and Boyd in the team. I wouldn't like to lose Barba even if Boyd ends up signing. If anything, he could be used for depth. Boyd will have Origin duty and he can cover for Hunt and Milford if injury occurs. I fear Hunt could be in for a tough season if only for the fact that opposition teams will be well and truly awake to him after such a stellar year.

When Barba signed I never assumed that his 2012 form would be the norm. Great players in such a sublime purple patch often struggle to replicate that success and once off field issues and injuries are thrown into the mix it would be nigh impossible. I envisioned him as taking a journey similar to Jarryd Hayne (incredible 2009 season, a few years of brilliance mixed with inconsistency before settling into producing performances at a very high benchmark in 2014).

The other thing is most teams have caught on to Barba - just as they do most players that have that kind of ability. The Bulldogs goosed a lot of teams that year with a game plan that allowed Barba to thrive. Something he doesn't have in Brisbane.

Jarryd Hayne was still very good between 2010 and 2013. He wasn't John Woo level of killing as he was this year or 3009. But he was still great, considering how pathetic the aEels generally were.

The only problem with Hayne around that period was that he became complacent in certain areas. A player of his stature should be immune to it, but considering the culture at Parra, it's easy to understand why he was able to sweat the small stuff.

While Barba's 2011 was flawed - I'd nominate it as a season of promise. He was creating plays that season that even the top level players could only dream of doing.

Put it this way, it isn't exactly like Barba is just another Leon Bott or Denan Kemp. There is something more to him. It's just a matter of whether or not he can reach that peak again. Regaining his speed should be his biggest priority.

Re: [RUMOUR] Ben Barba to Cronulla

people keep talking about Barba's 2012 form and how he hasn't been consistently good since.

however they conveniently forget that the last time that Boyd was consistently good was 2010. probably because it doesn't suit their agenda to mention it.

and Barba's 2012 was far better than anything we have ever seen from Bennett's golden boy.

and you can't tell me Hasler is the only coach that can get that type of form from Barba. pre 2012, everyone would have just assumed Bennett could do the same for Barba (similar to what he did for Soward), and if he can't do that anymore then i guess he really has lost it

Boyd has been consistently better than Barba though.

Re: [RUMOUR] Ben Barba to Cronulla

2010 and 2013 yes.
2011, 2012 and 2014, not even close.

Did you watch any games last year? Barba wasn't good until the last few rounds/only against the Bulldogs. Boyd wasn't bad apart from that one time he ran away from a bomb, which Barba did a lot more than Boyd.

Exactly. I still thought his individual performances and stats were very good during those years it was just his useless teammates and coaching that let him down so bad. So many ignorant people used to just look at Parramatta's spot on the ladder and would just make assumptions. That Parramatta side was just diabolical, Billy Slater could've been fullback and he would've looked below par.

Barba's form in the back half of 2014 means sweet **** all in this argument as he was playing a completely different position altogether. At fullback he was dropping sitters and getting dragged back 10 metres on kick returns, he was completely woeful. He needs his speed back if he's any chance of getting and keeping the fullback spot

Yeah his form in the position we are arguing about doesn't mean anything.

Even Barba's form in the last quarter of the year or whatever is massively overrated IMO. He played in the halves, and just like Hoffman was tits on a bull worthless there. No creativity, no organisation, not even a running game most of the time.

He finished a couple of easy tries in a couple of matches, but that's about it.
