Ben Hunt vs Ash Taylor

Throw me a PM if you come up with those extra tools that Hunt has over Taylor, I'll have a look over them and get back to you post haste, cheers. @Brett

ps I've watched Taylor and Hunt for years as well

Running game - Hunt's is better. Fact. Have a look at any of Brisbane's games from 2014 and 2015 - see how many breaks he makes HIMSELF.

Strength in contact. Hunt is stronger. Fact. Have a look hoe many times he scores with blokes hanging off him.

Passing. Hunt's passing game is better. Fact. Hunt can put a bloke through a hole. Not once have I seen Taylor do that. That's the mark of a halfback.

Toughness and defence. Taylor is a cream pie. Fact. Watch him in defence. He's only there to attack. Hunt actually hits blokes. Taylor couldn't knock the skin off a rice pudding.

The only place where Taylor has an advantage is kicking the ball...wow. Legend. Jamie Soward has a great kicking game to. Maybe we should sign him?

Frankly, Taylor reminds me of Soward. Reckon in 3 years we'll be saying "Ashley who?" Meanwhile Hunt will have at least 2 gfs and 1 premiership to his credit.

Running game - Too early to call, Taylor has shown glimpses of being just as good as Hunt in that department.

Strength in contact - I assume you just made this one up to make it seem more in favour of Hunt, see my response for Defence to get an idea for this one.

Passing - Too early to call, Taylor's passing game so far has been top notch, Hunt is also a great passer, give it a couple of years and we'll compare again.

Defence - Hunt has the advantage in this one for sure, but as I'm sure you're aware, Taylor is 21, Hunt is 26.. The biggest thing in terms of toughness, strength and defence as a Halfback is age and experience, so Hunt is always going to get the nod in these sort of categories (At this point in time, but we're arguing about who's going to be better in a few years)

Kicking - Not even close, Taylor has played in 140 less NRL games and has already put in more good kicks than Hunt.

Brent81 you're missing the most important asset a half can have.

Vision.

I'd have Ben Hunt ahead in this category. Do you agree?

I know this, Hunt has had two less shoulder operations than Taylor

So what you're saying is that in Ashley Taylor is better in the future because everything that Hunt is far better at currently doesn't matter because it's too early to call? You understand why this is ridiculous, right?

Yes, he went better in my opinion.

That Hunt won POTY and Taylor didn't, has more to do with whom their opposition was, than how well they played in their stints.

Actually, Taylor did win Player of the Year in 2015. But Hunt is the youngest person to win it. Advantage Hunt (just kidding).

I think the real question here is Taylor going to be so good (and so much better than Hunt) that we look back and curse the Broncos for ever letting him go? I doubt it.

You can't keep every player, and if you've got a future origin/Australian half already in your team, it makes perfect sense to let a young kid go, especially as we are smack-bang in the middle of our 'premiership window'. To go backwards for the sake of a POSSIBLE improvement in 3 years times is ridiculous.

Regardless of who ends up being better, the right choice was made in preferring Hunt to Taylor at this point in time.

No, I'm saying that Ashley Taylor will be better in the future because the primary things a Halfback needs to be good at are kicking the ball, passing the ball, running the ball.

Taylor is already ahead in 1 category, and he's in the ball park in the other 2 categories, with far less experience etc. The toughness and defensive prowess will come with time, or it won't.. A Halfback's playing future is rarely judged by his toughness in defence.

Entirely.

I think there are some people on here who (though I don't doubt their legitimacy) are chasing a phantom.

They want to compare what Hunt has actually done with what Taylor might (in some future fantasy world) do.

That is spectacularly unfair on Hunt.

Ps - anyone know where Duncan Paiua’aua is? Tim Smith? Brett Seymour? Harry Sjeka? Lot of next big things go nowhere.

So can we just get the rules straight.

1. Anything that Taylor does better than Hunt is the most important aspect of play as a half, and will only get better.

2. Anything that Hunt does better can't be counted because he has been a halfback for longer therefore it isn't fair.

Gotcha.

Taylor's running game is average. At best.

Taylor has shown nothing in the passing category. Been watching him for years and I have never seen him put a guy through a hole. Not once.

You need to be able to defend in first grade. Taylor can't. Defence isn't about age, it's about attitude. Seen him miss so many tackles in 20s isn't unbelievable. What is worse, he doesn't seem to actually put in when defending. He just waves them through.

So we have kicking as the only thing in his favour. Wow, Soward has a kicking game. Maybe we should sign him.

I have enjoyed the debate on both sides but isn't it a moot point in any event? If circumstances dictate in the future (injury, one of them getting a huge offer elsewhere and taking it; early onset dementia) that we need a new half, and Taylor is killing it, isn't it likely that he would choose to come back.

I can't see that he left on bad terms. He was apparently told by Bennett that he was ready for first grade and it would be a waste him sitting on the bench here or playing reggies. That call looks to have been correct. Would he not view the club favourably because of this and be willing to consider an offer to come back??

Seymour (cries).

Close, but once again, wrong.

Kicking, passing & running are obviously the 3 most important aspects of any half in the game of Rugby League, if you disagree with that, you're simply just looking to cause problems. The other aspects are all trivial and extremely biased because they're all based on physical tools, how can you expect a kid playing in his 8th NRL game to have the same strength and toughness of a nearly 150 game veteran, who's had 5 years extra to mature and hit the weights.

Talk about setting a biased list of comparisons..

Actually I don't think he's within a bull's roar in two of those categories.

All he has is a kicking game. Frankly he should be able to pass and run the ball by now. He hasn't shown a gift for either.

If he cat's it in defence, he won't make it. Frankly, watching him to date, have some serious doubts about his attitude to defence.
