Billy Slater should be our next coach and the sooner the better.

I'd never lie to you Tommy.

Honestly I don't blame you either and you're clearly not alone. The '95 series was before my time but of course I heard about it and how brilliant Fatty was as a coach and how the Maroons did him and replaced him with Bennett who got exposed on an even playing field etc.

It wasn't until I was out at some obscure pub I saw a poster with the 1996 poster and there's Fatty with the team.

Most kids are shattered to learn Santa doesn't exist. I was shattered to learn Fatty coached on and wasn't as successful.

Paging @Santa please!

I can't believe some of the over reacting shit I have read on here

Almost as bad as the people sprouting the "we've gone from 14th to 8th" rubbish.

This club scraping into the finals wasn't acceptable in the past, don't see why it should now. Not with the roster and resources this coach has at his disposal.

Melbourne don't accept that. Panthers don't. Roosters don't.

all of them were doing it at one point ... and i'm pretty sure none of them went from wooden spoon contenders to premiership heavy weights instantly. it takes time to get to that level.

the Panthers are the perfect example. they were either missing the eight by a long way (with several different coaches) or scrapping into the eight in the lower positions. they didn't go from also rans to their current level over night, it took a new coach, some roster changes and some changes to their systems.

and Cleary wasn't starting from as far back as Kevvie

If I was the Broncos, I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater just yet. They haven't completely recovered from the past just yet and that's reflected in their salary cap where they're still paying for other players to play elsewhere.

No doubt changes will have to be made in the future and they'll have to improve on several positions but they've also uncovered some players who are extremely talented and they can work with moving forward. I also believe they have a better balance with their overall squad and it should only get better as they have to rely on less bargain basement buys to field a squad.

I don't like to get too far ahead because a lot can happen but on the whole Brisbane have still made plenty of positive steps moving forward and last nights loss doesn't undo everything.

At no point have Bellamy, Ivan and Robinson accepted scraping into the finals. Their teams may have done so, but they did not accept that. They didn't see that season as a success because of it. It's top 4 and a premiership every year, that's their goal. Because they have the attitude you need to win premierships.

To be a premiership heavyweight, you need maintained success so no it's impossible to become one in a single season. But there's a long history of teams finishing around the bottom of the ladder and making the top 4 the following season and being a genuine threat. There's one QLD team currently doing that, it's not us.

If you guys want to accept scraping into the 8 because the Raiders left their run too late, be my guest. But I keep hearing excuses in this thread that are quite frankly, rubbish.

This is all part of Kevvies master plan. He knows what he's doing. We are going to win the premiership, but to do so it's best we avoid Melbourne and the Roosters on the way there (who i think we can all admit will be tough for us to beat).

We'll finish 6th where we will beat the Eels for a 3rd time this year, before playing the loser of the 2v3 match which will be the Sharks (who we can beat easily too). We then upset Penrrith in the preliminary, and go on the play the Coyboys in the grand final to get our 2015 revenge!

The team is only flat now, because Kevvie has been getting them to do overs at training. While this will cause us to lose some games now, it means we will come out firing for the finals!

Cleary spent 3/4 of his career to date accepting scraping into the finals if you take out his current stint at the Panthers, his career winning percentage is 47.46% ... that's the definition of scrapping into the finals

hell over his entire career his probably missed the finals more times than he's made it

and for Bellamy, it's pretty easy to make finals when you're cheating (like he was for 5 years)

if you think you can go from where Seibold had us to the a premiership heavyweight in such a short amount of time, then you're unrealistic, delusional, a fool or just hope we lose so you have something to whinge about ... maybe all of the above

Yeah nice, use the benchmark teams in the comp with settled coaches and marquee calibre players, I like it.

Not like we were literally in contention for the spoon the past few years or anything.

What it took was a long-term plan and belief in their juniors now look what they've got. When I say long-term, not a year or 2. There is/was a meme going around about a 5 year plan and that's basically what it took. I don't think Kevvie will get afforded 5 years, if you believe the crap on here he will be lucky to get 5 days.

Gus is on record saying he had a look at our setup and he wanted to bring that to Penrith and he did. They rarely recruit from the outside unless it's a really good buy. Capewell, Kikau and Koroisau come to mind.

The reality is that we have a young side who probably are still learning about what it takes to dish up consistent performances week to week, then we've had to cop some injuries and more recently the suspension to Carrigan. One player getting suspended shouldn't be a make or break situation but when you're a young side like we are and you lose your forward leader, it hurts.

I think next season is the acid test for Kevvie but I have seen enough this season to think we'll be in the top 4 next season, at the end of the season.

The only team that has gone from basically spooners to contenders overnight is the Roosters but unlike us, they don’t have to worry about an out of shape salary cap. They just magically get players they don’t want off their books.

The fact that there are people on this page happy with 8th shows just how much this club has fallen.

He's got one of the most talented rosters at his disposal, good leadership, one of the best halfbacks in the game, sitting in 4th for good chunks of the season, and we're going to be finishing 8th because of results going our way.

That's not as good as you make it sound.
time to accept that we have fallen, we were only sitting in 4th because some of the better teams were faltering .

We're fortunate Papenhuyzen was injured, but I would like to think we could've stuck it to the Storm if Hughes was still out. They fall right back to the pack with him out.

Patty's suspension has hurt us. No way they would've put 60 on us if he were snapping the halves in two. Gamble (in for whom, I don't know) would've made a big difference if he could've got under Hughes' skin. Maybe Herbie might've given us a little more attacking class on his edge, but I thought Deloise was the least of our problems.

Other than that, we were at full strength. An ugly reminder.

Nobody is throwing a party for scraping into the 8. Nobody is saying scraping into the 8 is acceptable long term. It's a pass mark for this year and this year only, considering the team has been literally in the cellar the last 2 years. This year, making the 8 in any form is a clear improvement, but not improving again next year will not be acceptable.
Honestly mate you make it sound like if we keep scraping into the 8 every year we'll all be delighted. But it's just not true. We demand better than being week 1 cannon fodder. But most of us are happy to give a pass mark to a season where there has been strong improvement, but the improvement must continue.
