PLAYER Billy Walters

What role should Billy Walters play?

Aside from the white shoe saga (which given how the NRL has handled worse situations since, really was a non-event), what other indiscretions am I missing from his 2 year stint with us that makes him a loose cannon?

well...there's kinda this;
On 22 August 2014, Kelly became one of the current NRL players and former Sharks players to accept reduced bans from the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority for his role in the club's 2011 supplements program.[11]

and this.... ;

In 2018 footage emerged of Kelly verbally abusing a female McDonald's employee while intoxicated. Hull FC released a statement a few days later saying the incident had been dealt with internally.[17]

and this..

In June 2012, Kelly was suspended before having his contract terminated after pleading guilty in court to smashing a light at Newcastle nightclub Fannys.

you know........

there's lots a that kinda stuff.

What's wrong with our roster? We have a number of players who come under the banner of "a person of good character who tries 100% every game" ;)
Well in that case, it’s as good as confirmed; Titans to win their maiden premiership in 2023.

The biggest problem we have is our current hooker options are manufactured. Paix and Walters are not guys who have played and loved the position for years these are guy who we moved to fill a need. I dont know much about Smoothy but it appears he has been playing the 9 for some time, knows enough to keep momentum churning. Mozer also seems to have a brain in his head and enjoys the position. In my opinion we need one out and out Hooker in our 17.

Obviously until the trial this weekend we don't know if either Walters or Paix has suddenly become a Hooker instead of a half playing Hooker. If they are stagnant I would love to see Smoothy and whoever preforms best this week play in the final trial.

Seems we are again in the position of having a spine position with ??? Surrounding it going into the season. It's not a good look as far as coaching goes in my opinion. Because anyone and everyone can see our difficiency in this area and if our coach is seen to deliberately make a decision based on nepotism (Sailor/Walters) it will be glaringly obvious. Our last top 30 position needs to be based on what we actually need as a squad.

My issue with Kelly is that he came to the club under prepared and had to spend a bit of time in QLD Cup to get fit, sort of got things off to a bad start in that regard.

You compare that to someone like Taupau who had his missus training him to keep in shape.

So now we’re giving players contracts / extensions because they try hard and give it their all? Sounds good in theory, but no one tried harder than Turpin and he’s not at the club anymore.

I don’t think anyone with eyes actually thinks Walters is the best option at the club. The only option, sure.

Why is that though? Why did the club get rid of Levi, Turpin and Kelly in the space of 12 months and sign, and then extend another fringe first grader in that same timeframe? We didn’t need to keep all three of them, but we could have kept one. Like I said, at absolute best it is a sideways signing. It makes no sense.

One thing we do agree on; we sure have fallen from our glory days, I just didn’t realise we’d landed at handing out contracts like participation ribbons.

If Kelly is such a hot commodity why is he signed on to play QRL with Redcliffe ?
And not another NRL club ?

Walters arrived at the Broncos as a 28yo half who had played 12 NRL games across 3 seasons at 2 clubs.

I’d hazard a guess if it weren’t for his opportune Broncos contract, you’d be saying the exact same thing about him.

Yeah , nah he arrived as a 26 year old . In 2021 /22 pre season .
He just turned 28 .

And I think you`ll find it`s hard to be selected and play 1st grade if your knee ligaments are shredded .

No, Billy arrived in 2022.

Remember the Tigers played hard ball and wouldn't release him unless we gave them Reece Walsh? Then weeks later that deal was off the table because Reece was off to the Warriors?

Billy barely played that season because of his knee reconstruction.

Tsk tsk Mc Hunt .
And what weight do you give Mitss Pepp`s opinions ? Gonna take some of his crypto investment tips too ?
Look at the other replies.

I meant end 21 early 22 . He was 26 till Feb 22 .

Gee, this Billy Walters character attracts some chatter on here. No wonder we signed him.

He just turned 29 and has been at the club one season…

I sincerely hope for his sake his knee ligaments haven’t been “shredded” since 2012 when he was 18, so just wondering why he didn’t play NRL until 2019 when he was 25?

He arrived in 22 as a 27 year old who was 28 before the season started and he turned 29 yesterday.
