Broncos Announce Hodges & Parker as Co-Captains

Well, there's no one else stepping up to the challenge, so unless we manage to sign DCE or something for next season, I reckon it'll stay this way until Parker retires (which I'd imagine will be in 2 or 3 years time?).

It's a temp move, 2/3yrs top these guys will be captain and whoever steps up in the halves will get the role next..

let's get crazy here, Ben Hunt will be the next captain.

Hmmm as much as I've pushed Parker as the natural selection, I don't think if this makes the wrong decision, right.

The better leader and choice for captain 2 years ago was Parker. The decision was made to go with Thaiday, and management should have been smart enough to choose the right leader.

They should have also thrown their weight behind Thaiday through thick and thin. But you don't step down from the captaincy unless there's an issue or you've lost the support of the cohort.

Also, and correct me if I am wrong, but Alex Glenn captained the side in Sam Thaiday absence, even when Parker was playing?

This just means Thaiday can take less responsibility, and give less of a shit during games.

It's like being promoted to manager from amongst your peers and then being demoted and replaced by people who used to report to you.

Happy Sammy and Hook apparently did this in a professional mature way. I believe it's the right thing for Thaiday to do, and will allow him to concentrate on his game, and hopefully return to his damaging best on the right fringe.

Also convinced this is a transitional decision, whether because Cam Smith really is coming next season, or because the might consider that Glenn and/or Macca are not quite ready for the captaincy.

Personality wise, I would actually like to see Macca get the captaincy eventually, as I'm not sure Glenn is extrovert enough for the job, but obviously only if Andrew establishes himself as a worthy hooker.

In all honesty, it's just a change by name only IMO.

I think Parker and Hodges probably called a lot of the shots onfield anyway.

Wow, so 2013 was the year that had to happen. Good old unlucky '13. In reality, we had by far the most unlucky year possible. We lost so many games by not many points, were shafted in many of those games with bad calls, and generally just did not get the bounce of the ball. Injury-wise it was horrible for the backs. In reality, the team was pretty awful, even if we'd had heaps more luck we still wouldn't have gone very far. But having such a bad year meant that everyone was put on notice - players and staff - and for the first time in a long time they realised that the Broncos don't get success by default, they have to fucking earn it.

So far there have been excellent signs that they've learned that lesson and, as someone said above, the wrongs are being righted. For such a proud club, it would be hard to publicly admit failings, in fact I would have expected these things to happen behind closed doors and things put in place more subtly. But maybe they really are scared that the fans will turn their backs, and decided to let them know that their concerns are truly being heeded. In terms of major changes, that many of us were calling for:

* Poor fitness. They've now fired the old trainers and brought in a new mob.
* Poor recruitment. Not only have they gone out and played hard-ball in the market, they've also gone to major lengths to secure fundamental regions in order to aid future recruitment.
* Lack of speed. Barba & Milford will certainly help that.
* Poor halves. Sent them both packing.
* McCullough not developing. Put him on notice by chasing Smith.
* Thaiday poor captain. Stripped him of that role so he can concentrate on his game.
* Griffin bad coach. Given him 10 games (apparently) to keep his job.

They really are everything the fans called for. Which means we're all geniuses and could actually run the club (as some would like to think), or, unfortunately, they're shit out of ideas, addressing the problems on the surface, but not getting to the root of the problem. I still think that despite our impotent attack, our defence was a major concern. Fitness will address it somewhat, but keeping Kearney involved in that role (well, in any role really) is still an issue in my eyes. But in any case, the changes that have been made are all positive changes and will only help the club in the long term. Booting the halves & stripping Sam of the (c) might cause some short-term headaches, but again, long term, they're for the best. In fact, by showing the players that even the captain is not safe from scrutiny, and the team comes before individuals, it also shows players like Hoffman that playing for the Broncos is a privelage and playing where the team needs you is what has to be done.

Tbh Sam is the scapegoat when it really should have been Hook. Although i'm a fan of him not being captain, i think it's an absolute disgrace that he is the one who is taking the fall instead of Hook that bag of ****.

Agreed, I was supporting Parker when Lockyer retired but when you choose your Captain unless he is absolutely falling away with form and leadership you stick with him. Doesn't sit right with me poor Sammy taking a hit for others faults.

However Parker deserves it and so does Hodges defintely after his 2013 he carried the team from centre, now that is special

I do remember that in 2012 but in 2013 it went back to Parker in his absence

IMO, that sums up exactly what did happen.

True, but they never had the captain's pressure on them in that time. Thaiday had to do all the captainy things, like conferences and extra criticisms captains usually get after losses. I don't think he managed to handle it, hopefully this, losing weight and wanting to bring back ball playing will turn him into a much better player than what we've seen in the last 2 years.
