Broncos Announce Hodges & Parker as Co-Captains

Unlucky I want able to post when the news broke.

Good move by the club. Thiaday wasn't able to inspire and motivate his troops, had been given to many chances to prove himself and had lost form since taking over as captain. Parker was our standout player last year and would die for the club and seems like the player that can lead a team. Bit skeptical about Hodges though as he is quite injury prone and is unlikely to play most games not including rep games.

I am not huge on the co-captains but I do think Parker and Hodges compliment each other well. Both have leadership capabilities but are very different in style.
How so Beads?
I don't know the men apart from what I observe and to me they seem very similar. Both appear very intense and passionate. I have watched both men speak to referees and while Hodges is more prone to fire up at them, Parker also lost his cool with them a couple of times last year

To me Parker is more inclined to lead from the front. Parker doesn't usually lose his cool imo. Hodges seems to be more of a talker and will tell the guys off if they are shit. Not sure that is what Parker will do. Also Parker is the ultimate pro in preparation and training. Hodges would be the opposite of that I would think.

Quite possibly right on the training side of it but I have seen Parker carry on exactly the same way as Hodges on the field just not as regularly. We will have to wait and see how he handles the pressure if things are not going to plan

He was most definitely lacklustre in his injury prevention & pre/post game stuff in his early years. But right now he is meticulous, he has to be, while simultaneously being a walking advertisement for what happens if you aren't careful in your early years. If I was a young player I'd certainly take notice of ol' hobble-knees.

Agree with you about Thaiday ........shit captain, not only unable to inspire his troops but also unable to inspire himself as a player as well.

Hooks'd decision was the wrong one.

I wanted Parker from the outset.

and

now

co fucking captains ?

Jesus Christ !!!

What are we ....South Sydney?

Fucken shit idea.

Can you blame him? The amount of dud calls we received would frustrate even the most calm captains.

Co-captains isn't that bad of an idea one leads the forwards and one leads the backs. I wanted Parker as captain from the start too btw

I don't think there's anything wrong with having two captains, especially if no one really stands out as captain material, like Lockyer or Smith or whatever.

Being captain doesn't mean much on the field any more. Your role is generally lowered to talk / annoy / whinging at the ref and not much else.

Most teams have a leadership group off the field. This group plays the old school captain role on the field. Eventually most teams will name co captains, which will contest of two of the most consistent players from the leadership group.

Good decision and ultimately what needed to be done. The onus is on Thaiday to get his form back up to snuff now and if he doesn't, time to go.

Honestly, can someone (who may have rugby league playing experience) explain to me how having the captaincy in a Rugby League team can affect your on field performance? The only decisions to make are whether to kick for a penalty goal or to tap or kick for the sideline. Other than that it is giving the team a serve behind the goalposts when the other team scores a try. It's not like he has to set fields or decide which bowler bowls next. Surely presenting for interviews isn't something that is thought about by captains on the field.

When I played I never was a captain but from what I've heard as a captain it's 50/50 on how you perform and imo it's also about how you handle the responsibility of leading your team. Some players lift their game more as they need to inspire their teammates but some (like Thiaday) lose form shouldering more responsibility. It isn't just about making decisions when you get a penalty and giving your team a serve being captain you need to inspire and motivate your teammates, ask necessary questions to the referee when needed, have full trust of your men and lead from the front.

Something called pressure, when you're captain you feel extra responsibility for the performance of the team. Some people thrive under that pressure, some people don't. You must be kidding if you think the only role of a captain is to decide on penalty kicks and chatting a few times behind the posts.

Also the fact that he was an unfit person and was forced to run more metres when running to the ref for chats about their calls and what not could definitely hinder his other abilities.

If anyone gives a shit about what Chris johns thinks (I know I certainly don't... And the title of 'club legend' is a bit of a stretch) but according to him we should have kept a failing captain or installed someone that isn't ready and just throw away the next few years. Thanks Chris!

He doesn't say anything close to what you've claimed.

Did you even read it?

Johns says the shock change shines a light on the club's lack of long-term planning.

"It's not an ideal preparation to be replacing your captain in January," he said.

"It has to be an interim thing. 'Hodgo' and Corey are great players, but they're in their 30s.

"To me it says that they're lacking leaders at the club in that next generation.

"Whether they get Cameron Smith at the club next year or not, that will only be a short-term option as well. He will only give them a couple of years too.

"They need a succession plan to bring some of these young kids through."
