Broncos pair cautioned by police

When I say they did nothing wrong, I don't mean it literally, technically they did something wrong, but realistically it's an absolute nothing incident.

Anyway, how is the media allowed to publish names of players, I really don't understand, how come when their are stories about court cases they are not allowed to say names, but can repeatedly talk about greg bird who has/had a court case. If the average joe pissed on the wall would they be allowd to write an article about it and name him? (not that anyone would even read the article) or is there different laws for people with public profiles.

Thought you weren't going to say anything else about this issue?

As far as I know, names are only withheld when minors are involved - whether they committed the crime, or are the victim. And adults names will be withheld if their publication would help identify a minor who is involved in the incident.

I'm sure someone (Mick?) can clarify this though.

lol one line explaining my last post, I actually more so wanted to know how the media is allowed to publish names anyway especially in court cases where it may influence a decision.

Cheers schmix, that probably makes more sense, I was reading this article about a 35 year old who did some horrible things to his 2 year old son and I was wondering why they said "Whose name we're not allowed to publish" but seeing as it invovled a 2 year old then it makes sense.

As far as I am aware, FACTUAL information can't technically influence any decision. They would not run into any legal issues if they simply name someone from a police report or use terms like "it is alleged".

Giving opinions or speculating without any evidence to back up the claim is where they would run into trouble.

Fair enough then, so they pretty much can write an article but they are not allowed to give an opinion.

deserving of a fine and a week or two off ... along with a last chance letter of course

the 3 last year involved in Toiletgate should have been sacked

The Broncos as a club have been very very weak on these issues since Toiletgate ... whats good for the goose is clearly not what good for the gander

appalled

Oink !

They were allowed to drink on that night, fine them for going to far, they wont do it again...

3rd page of the courier mail says Michaels SLAPPED the car, back page says he KICKED it... make up ur mind courier theres a difference between an arm and a leg!

And while i think they were stupid... they were in BYRON BAY!!!

Cops are everywhere!
Pedestrains think they own the road down there at night, you get people walking in front and behind your car, so you just have to stop and wait...and whilst your doing this some drunk smartarse will more than likely smack the front or back of your car...cant remember the amount of times i had it done to me on the way home from work, if the cops are on the oppposite side of the road they will have a go at whoever done it...

secondly, Those alleys reek of piss if you walk past on any night of the week you will see tourists peeing (boys and girls people, yes we can be equally disgusting), the cops walk around the back...bail people up, walk them down to the footpath and take down there details and then tell them to get lost, ive seen them bail up famous surfers and some tv stars ...and it dosent make the papers because there not associated with an organisation who was involved a sex scandal last year, and we know the media love to bash the broncos...

Which is why it makes them really stupid, but thats all...

Mixed opinions on this problem. I agree with those both arguments... Maybe I shouldn't have said anything.

You've still missed the point. Here, I'll make it big, and in bold.

PLAYERS SHOULD NOT BE PUTTING THEMSELVES INTO SITUATIONS WHERE THEY CAN BRING BOTH THE GAME AND THE BRISBANE BRONCOS INTO DISREPUTE. ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY HAVE BEEN DRINKING

These off field incidents need to be taken out of the hands of clubs and dealt with by one body. I think all such incidents should be sent to the judiciary to decide the appropriate punishment. There needs to be consistency across the NRL. eg Kenny grade 1 lewd behaviour 1 week, Michaels grade 1 unnecessary contact with a motor vehicle 1 week.

On a lighter note, It's not that long go that we had instances of players urinating on the field during a game. Was it maybe Pat Jarvis of St George? How would that go down now? Would it be sent to the judiciary on a contrary conduct charge? Then there's Kevvy's slight cocking of the leg to let one rip in an origin game. Grade 2 offensive behaviour based on the strength of odour.

The only time I would agree is when the punishments are consistent, the nrl (as above) need to make an independent board to deal with all incidents and punish players.
That roosters player anthony cherington, pulled a knife out on his wife, said he was going to commit suicide, etc didn't get any suspension, so to me it seems unfair, the players are still stupid for doing it, but a suspension would be out of line, when the incident last year, none of the players got suspended which by far the worse incident, and then wallace during the off season didn't get fined or anything by the club (he would of got embarassed big time though by all the boys having to come back from holidays early) and that's my point.
I would have no problems with them spending a week in reserves, providing if lockyer, or hunt, or thaiday (or any one of the top players) got the same punishment if they are caught up in an incident, but for some players to gett off without anything because they are more important to the team would be hypocritical by the club.

I'd actually be in favour of a player chaired NRL disciplinary commission. Their job being to deal with any breaches of the code of conduct. They recommend the punishment to the NRL who implement it, with the scope being fines all the way up to deregistration.

I agree with an NRL disciplinary committee is probably going to bring the least inconsistency. However, the main problem with this being individual club's codes of conduct - they all currently have them and they would all be slightly different, which is why there is currently so much inconsistency. Therefore the NRL would need to rule clubs aren't to have their own Code of Conduct and everyone just signs up to the NRL one - which some clubs may not necessarily think is strong enough. Also a particular club may want to completely get rid of a player for a particular incident but the disciplinary committee only recommends a fine and a 2 week suspension - what do they do in that instance?

I haven't read a lot of posts on this topic, but I think a lot of people are missing something entirely:

Bruno Cullen is the master of the cop-out. After Wallace played up last year he went on a bit spield about how the club is going to crack down hard on anyone who did little as have their shoelaces undone while out. I think the players were only boys being boys (which is ok I think, but they probably shouldn't being who they are), but Cullen has done sfa in terms on discipline I reckon.
