Absolutely. A back row of Oates and Sua is exactly what's planned.

I said it a while ago, Glenn has been on the lower end of the pecking order for a while.

Thaiday may also get a tap on the shoulder like Parker did.

If these young guys keep progressing, it's hard to keep them out of first grade.

Fai is next. That kid could be anything, but has some traffic in front of him for now. I would actually think he may have jumped ahead of Joe O at this stage.

Ese'ese is starting to show what he can do, after a big off season.

The future is bright, particularly in the forwards.

The problem is though that Gillett is signed for 4 years, so one of Oates or Su'A would have to come off the bench.

Yeah i think glenn moved on and thaiday to retire in a couple max , to make way for sua .
I remember when Thaiday was a baby faced rookie. Where did the years go ?

Sounds good joe . Just one question .Were we serious about chasing Ryan james & napa ?

Hoffman was adamant about wanting to be a fullback ... doesn't mean that's whats best for the team

After watching him for the last few months of last season, it's definitely what's best for the team, he's horrible under the high ball when he's lacking confidence, and he's going to lose that speed sooner rather than later. Get him on the edge where he can just run on to short balls from Milford and bulldoze smaller players.

then teach him how to catch a bomb, we have one of the best back rows in the comp ... and Oates is one of the best wingers in the comp, not only is he able to bulldoze opposition wingers when close to the line, but he gets our sets off to a great start and has this uncanny ability to find the try line even when half his body is out over the sideline.

I didn't want to jinx him by saying anything but at the fan day I thought Thaiday looked like football is taking its toll on his body. I wouldn't be surprised at all if this is his last year.

I think it is the meat pies taking their toll ... not football :P

"Teach him how to catch a bomb"

If only it were that simple, we could've taught Hunt how to kick. Sometimes there's just things that players can't drastically improve, despite how much effort and time they put into it. Oates has pretty much always had feet for hands, I believe that was one of his biggest cons coming out of the U20's.

He's a great winger when it comes to finishing and getting us off to good starts, but let's not forget how important it is to defuse bombs at an efficient rate, not even mentioning his major flaws defensively when it comes to positioning, how many times has he come in when he should've stayed out, and vice versa. We'd have an extra premiership to our name if we had "Taught him how to position himself defensively".

Bring him further in field so he has less to worry about, no more high balls, far less decision making defensively, just hit hard, run hard. That's his future.

What happened when we didn't give Hoffman what he wanted?

But in this case, Oates moving to the second row wouldn't be a bad move. He would be a bloody good second rower.

I'm a big fan of Pearson, and I think he is something special. I think he will be the winger we've wanted since Yow Yeh's career ended.

If moving Oates to the second row means Pearson can play on the wing full time. I'm all for it.

Agree.

Hope we get to see a fair bit of Pearson this season.

I'm genuinely interested in whether you have ever suggested Oates move from wing to backrow before, or if you are just doing it now out of fear that we will lose him if he stays on the wing.

If catching is his biggest problem on the wing, then have Kahu switch with him in defence, Kahu is excellent under the high ball, and centers are less likely to have to deal with them.

I'm a firm believer that player's shouldn't dictate where they play, they should play where it's best for the team ... for Oates right now it's the wing, that may change in the future who knows,

It's not far less decision making; defending at three in is hard work. You're with half who often isn't a great defender and you have halves running at you making decisions on Thurston and Cronk every set.

Third in dictates the speed of the line and often when to go in on guys.

Hoffman was a cry baby ... I'm a firm believer that players should be allowed to dictate where the play, but play where it's best for the team

Hoffman was a nothing.

Everyone acknowledges that Oates will end up in the second row eventually.

The two just don't compare.

He's a backrower who has bided his time on the wing. He's done his time as a fill in and now it's time to play him in his preferred (and probably best) position.

Give him 12 months in the second row and he'll be better than Gillett.

What happened with Hoffman? He was told he wouldn't be playing fullback because Boyd was coming and if that wasn't enough for him he was free to leave...

Which he promptly did and then didn't play fullback anywhere else either...

Should be an excellent case study for Oates to keep in mind, too...

You're comparing Oates to Hoffman?

Shakes head.
