Broncos Player Movement and Rumours 2020

You’d definitely imagine Wayne has a backup hooker / utility close to signed given he’s let Waddell go. I know he wasn’t special but he was a specialist hooker who could fill in if need be.

I saw Jayden Nikorima is in Brisbane at the moment I wonder if he’s coming into red hill for a chat or to sign some papers...

Baptiste might need a new club wouldmt say no to him

I was a fan too but what you're saying is so true.

I think Bennett needs to come to terms with the fact the wrestle is what wins premierships. The reason these teams have big forwards isn't necessarily for metres (we do ok in that department), it's more so they get quick play the balls as they are too big to twist onto their back and either stay on their feet or fall onto their stomach.

The little-fitter middle men with good footwork tired players out in 2015 but now the teams have adapted to the interchange through improved fitness and manipulating the hia, and purposeful time wasting (more time spent arguing with the ref, intentional penalties, no quick tap penalties anymore and video ref time). This has lead to more energy>more wrestle>even more energy>less broken play and more 'set' defensive lines.

The nrl would be better without these things but the footy gods down in Melbourne won't allow it so we either need to adapt or wait at least 5 more years to win another premiership

Works both ways though. No surprises where he learned it, but Blair was easily our most effective defender in that regard. It was rare that he’d allow a quick PTB, he was great at wrapping up the player and the ball, and putting them on their back or at least in a difficult position to play it quickly. He’d also be able to get himself set before allowing the ball-carrier to do so, meaning he was rarely caught off-side at marker and the opposition wasn’t able to step off the mark to play it.

He’ll be a massive loss, unfortunately it’s those things that aren’t obvious unless you’re looking for it, and it will likely end up with us just inexplicably appearing to be loose in the rucks and unable to prevent or halt our opposition’s momentum.

THE Broncos say they have been assured by the NRL they will receive Sunday afternoon home football next year and hope for more than one game.
Brisbane played all home matches at night in 2017 and none on a Sunday, largely because they are a preferred team of Channel 9 for one of its Thursday and Friday telecasts.
The NRL’s promise of recent years that they “will take back the draw’’ from telecast networks in 2018 will have its acid test with next month’s draw, with Canberra and Newcastle and smaller Sydney clubs wanting more free-to-air exposure than in recent years.
“We are hoping the draw is a little kinder to us next year – four Thursday night home games didn’t help (with 2017 crowds),’’ Broncos chairman Dennis Watt said.
“Sunday games are family friendly and we’d like some for our fans next year. Todd Greenberg (NRL CEO) said he would look to try and have some Sunday games for us – we’d certainly expect more than one.’’
The NRL also needs to provide matches for Nine and Fox League, which deliver consistently good ratings and also set the groundwork for maintaining the sport’s rights values from 2023-27.
That NRL grand final on Sunday was watched by 380,000 fewer people than the 2016 title decider.
Like all major spectator sports the game is subject increasingly to fracturing of its audience, which has more ways to watch a match on their devices.
Broncos coach Wayne Bennett said they would not play another World Club Series match in England next February if asked.
The English Rugby Football League is having trouble raising Australian interest, with clubs wary of adding pre-season games for players who will contest the World Cup until as late as December 2.
“We have played games in England the last three years. We made a decision we probably won’t go over — we will take a bit of a different direction with it,’’ Bennett said.
Bennett said the Broncos would play trial games at venues to be announced, but would be outside Brisbane.
Grand finalists Melbourne and North Queensland have booked a testimonial trial in February to benefit Cameron Smith and Johnathan Thurston and the Storm may play as many as two trials against the Warriors, one at the Sunshine Coast and one in New Zealand.
Preliminary finalists Brisbane would have been a welcome WSC opponent, but the World Club Challenge trophy could only be contested by the Storm, as premiers.
The Storm and Cowboys declined the chance to play WSC matches in 2017 as preliminary finalists, with the Broncos losing to Warrington and Cronulla defeated in the WCC by Wigan.
Broncos CEO Paul White has made plain in the past two years their interest in hosting an English club in a WSC match at Suncorp Stadium.
“We’ve done a lot of the heavy lifting for it (the WSC) over the years, playing it three times,’’ Watt said.

That’s all great news. Obviously I won’t be going to any Sunday arvo games (the commute’s a bit far from Canberra), but I’m really really looking forward to seeing us play in daylight again!

And I’m glad we’re not wasting time on the WSC again. Force the grand finalists to go, wear those bastards out.

I agree he was our best wrestler in defence but he didn't get involved in enough tackles for the benefit to be felt, and towards the end of this year even this part of his game was only strong when he was fired up (about 1/4 games).

Don't get me wrong I liked him and he brought a lot to this team, but his negatives outweighed his positives by the end. Whether it was age, Tallis' vendetta getting to him, the media highlighting him to the refs, or motivation decreasing is unclear but he clearly wasn't switched on most games. And when he wasn't switched on he became a liability.

There's gotta be something in the works imo. Ain't no way we're releasing Blair a year early on a good priced deal just for the sake of it. Maybe we're just really excited at the prospects we're about to bring in.

Potentially could have a front-row depth chart looking like this for 2018 -

McGuire
Ofahengaue
Pangai Jr
Sims
Vete*
Fai
Lodge*
Taueli*
Mago
Carrigan
Haas
Savelio

* Haven't officially signed, but strongly rumoured.

May not be the sexiest bunch of players, but there's an abundance of untapped potential right there, even if only 25% of them reach their full potential, we've got a chance.

It works for the Storm because Cameron Smith adds to the effectiveness of all Melbourne's forwards.
Not to mention that the storm forwards have a very distinct role to play and a game plan when they go into the game ie slow their ruck, generate speed in our ruck.

I have not seen anywhere that Vete will be signing with us.

Why would you want gorden ?

As a fullback, in the off-chance that we don’t have Boyd. I don’t see many other NRL quality fullbacks who ‘might’ be available besides him.

He may have signed at the Roosters for next year, but Blair was signed with us for next year too...

Vete re-signed with the Warriors earlier this year.

Vete re-signed with the Warriors earlier this year.

So he has. Everyone just must be working off Zero Tackle, which says otherwise. Strange for them to miss something like that. Vete’s no rookie or 2nd tier player.

He hasn't re-signed with the Warriors afaik..

The Warriors have an enormous hard-on for announcing every single signing and re-signing they can, if they had re-signed him, they would've announced it. Only thing I can find on it is a one-off article on some NZ website.

Oh FFS don't even start with this agenda.
And why the hell not?
It's relevant, current and of great importance for the Broncos future, as we could mortgage a big slice of our cap on a guy that played 2 seasons above average in the position in his whole career, and is not gonna get better with age.

Don't want to discuss or read it? Skip right ahead to the next post.

Have we actually signed mago ?

Have we actually signed mago ?

Not announced by the club, as we seem to rarely do, but Chris Garry and a few others have reported it as done.

Pretty much echoing exactly what I said last night -

THE decision to let Adam Blair secure a pay day before his contract with Brisbane expires is a no brainer.
The question Broncos decision makers had to ask themselves was ‘do we continue to invest in an ageing forward or do we secure the best promising forwards for the next 10 years?’
They chose the latter.
Blair made no secret of his desire to finish his career at the Broncos.
Instead, he’ll leave for the Warriors and collect the biggest pay day of his career.
Yes, bigger than the $2 million deal he signed with the Wests Tigers back in 2012.
Everyone’s a winner.
While it was the blessing of Wayne Bennett that opened the door for the Kiwi to explore the market despite having a year to run on his deal, in a unique way, Blair also has Jack Bird to thank.
It’s Bird’s arrival from Cronulla which will help soften the blow of Blair’s departure.
How?
It’s no secret Bird wants to see more ball. He’ll do just that next season with the club poised to play him at lock and move Josh McGuire back into the forward pack.
Let’s take a look at the Broncos’ pack for next season.
Korbin Sims, who welcomes a pay increase next year, starts with McGuire.
Tevita Pangai Junior, Joe Ofahengaue and Sam Thaiday are on the bench and all able to play in the middle.
While they’ve lost Herman Ese’ese and Jai Arrow, they welcome English backrower Andre Savelio to the club. He can play both edge and middle.
They’ve re-signed NYC skipper and lock Patrick Carrigan, beaten the Gold Coast to sign Cowboy Patrick Mago and promote 20s gun Thomas Flegler and Australian schoolboy Payne Haas to the top squad next season.
Take it as read, Matt Lodge will play for the Broncos in 2018.
His Redcliffe teammate Myles Taueli also joins him in the top squad.
While some people external to the organisation will question the release of Blair, nothing is done without thorough thought.
Bennett and his recruitment chief, Peter Nolan are too smart for that.
The release of Blair has been well planned. It’s also an incredible act of good will on the Broncos’ behalf.
Blair was contracted and viewed as a year-by-year prospect moving forward.
The Broncos have never been a club to splash cash on forwards. They also devalue middle men based on their age. Blair turns 32 next year, aside from his time in Melbourne, his best years have been at Red Hill.
Can he maintain this form at the Warriors? Only time will tell but the Broncos are happy to lean on the future rather than depend on old legs.
Consider this. North Queensland beat the Roosters with a starting front row of Scott Bolton and Shaun Fensom to cement their place in the grand final. It goes to show you don’t need a superstar pack to take down a team filled with superstars.
Many questioned how the club would replace Justin Hodges when he retired. Bargain buy Taufua Moga did an exceptional job.
The same happened when Corey Parker hung up the boots.
Like Melbourne, the Broncos are in a transitional period and the future is bright.
And other than the Storm, the Broncos have been the most winningest team for the past five seasons.
Many have questioned Bennett’s decisions before but time and time again, the Super coach continues to get the runs on the board.
Over to you, baby Broncos.
