Wait... Billy slater in bottom 50% of fullbacks for Xfactor? You're kidding yeah? The others, sure but to say Billy is ridiculous. Also, to imply those teams got there because they had safe fullbacks is ridiculous. Which team won the comp? Storm. They Have Billy Slater. Billy slater has xfactor. Xfactor wins big games.

so you had a moot point? Okay... The other thing, Gordon and Coote would be on 1/3 or less of what Boyd is wanting... I'm fine with having a safe reliable fullback, but not if they are costing you $1mil a season... at $1mil a season, Boyd would likely be the highest earning fullback in the game. (if reports of slater being under $1mil and Tedesco being closer to $900k are true). That's ridiculous... I would honestly prefer a player like Gutho who puts 100% effort in each week, and is 1/3 the price.

People are scoffing at paying Ash Taylor $1mil a season. I can tell you now, I would much rather to pay a 22 y/o halfback $1mil than a 30 year old fullback...

You forget the Panthers, Titans, Manly, Warriors, & Rabbitohs fullbacks?
All of them are costing there clubs a mill a year. And a mill a year for Boyd wouldn't be all included in the cap. He would have some TPAs knocking it down a bit like Slater does. If you think Slater isn't on at least a mill a year then you are really kidding yourself. Same with Tedesco.

Lets rephrase this then.
A 22 year old halfback who hasn't played a rep game yet (and is quite frankly not even near the conversation for one either), never won a premiership let alone been in a grand final so is really unproven in a big game vs a 30 year old who has represented his state and country, won grand finals, won a Clive Churchill as best on ground in a grand final, played numerous finals games and is widely regarded as one of the best players on the planet.
Saying Boyd doesn't deserve is pay packet is an absolute fucking copout. We fell to shit this year when he was injured in the finals. Still looked ok when either halves went down and Boyd was still at the back. He is the most important player in this team. For what he has accomplished, he fully deserves his money.

My point wasn't moot, it was accurate, it's hardly my fault that you didn't read the post correctly. I said that Slater was arguably still up there for his game breaking ability, but that's taken a backseat at this stage of his career to his superior positioning, toughness & intelligence.

The 4 Fullbacks left at the pointy end of the season are all Fullbacks known for their safety, reliability and defensive positioning. You didn't see any of true "X-Factor" Fullbacks remaining.. the likes of Tedesco, Trbojevic, Tuivasa-Sheck, Holmes. (All highly paid.. by the way)

In my opinion the way the league is heading is you need roughly this team make-up to succeed consistently at a high level

Safe, reliable - Fullback, Halfback, Hooker
X-Factor, speed - Five-Eighth, Both Wingers

The other positions are a bit of a mixed bag, but you'll generally see the very good teams follow this archetype, Storm & Roosters nailed it this season, us and the Cowboys would've come very close if it weren't for the injuries.

Darius Boyd Stats 2017
Kick Return Meters - 582 (26th)
All Runs - 259 (95th)
All Run Meters - 2180 (111th)
Tackle Breaks - 63 (51st)
Line Breaks - 4 (154th)
Line Break Assists - 10 (28th)
Tries - 3 (164th)
Try Assists - 7 (48th)

Those aren't the stats of a $1mil a season player. (Billy Slater beat him in every single category, some of which he beat him by a significant margin. Similarly Tedesco, RTS, Clint Gutherson, Tom Turbo, Matt Moylan, Dylan Edwards, Michael Gordon also beat him in many, if not all, aspects.

Some fans on here:

* "Broncos need Ash. He's worth every cent. And he'll want to come back to the Broncos to play under Wayne."

-- When it looks like the Titans offer will blow Broncos one out of the water.

* "Ash Taylor. No way he is worth what the Titans are offering him. They can keep him."

Please do 15 & 16.

The bloke had an injury plagued season. He has been amongst our best the two prior.

My point is, he's getting older, stats are deteriorating as is his body, and $1 mil+ as reported for FOUR YEARS!!! is ridiculous for someone at his age, in the position he plays.

I think we should be a little worried Brennan might make a play for Lodge. Brennan knows him well, and the Titans certainly could offer him a good contract.

Mate he's 30 not 50.

He broke his thumb and tweaked a hammy.

Bit harsh to say his body is deteriorating.

Exactly, he's 4 years younger than Billy Slater, and look at what Billy is doing at age 34.

(Disclaimer: I also don't think I'd be paying him $1m per season in pure salary cap terms, but if it's $700k under the cap and $300k in TPA's, I'm fine with it)

He said he always has bad hamstrings after his achilies injury. So did hodges. Thus why we paid hodges a whole lot less.

I don't think they could make any better offer to him than we could...They are paying Wallace, James and Proctor big money and I'm pretty sure Passi was trying to get more money so they showed him the door.
They'll go all out to keep Taylor, there won't be much left after that.

Don' forget the chosen one and his probable million dollars under the cap.

I think they have a fair amount to play with tbh. Pasi is homesick i belive.

I also wouldn’t be paying Boyd more than 500-600k under the cap, TPAs go for your life and I agree with @Morepudding.

He isn’t saying Boyd is rubbish, I don’t think anyone has said that ever but he is a massive risk at $1 million due to his age and injuries this year. It could just be one of those years or he really could degenerate badly. Slater had two years out to effectively freshen up, Boyd is starting to look pretty banged up.
