I don't think Cam Smith the player is the answer to this mess... I would take his influence as an assistant / support staff / just get him around the club, but I don't think paying $1.5m / year for a one year loan is a good return on investment.

Having said that, I think its beyond unlikely that he would ever agree to an off-field position with anyone other than the Storm and I'm willing to bet any agreement with Melbourne would probably be preceded by him stuffing us around first, giving us false hope, drawing a huge offer and then assisting the Storm again regardless.

if i may digress; id say there are plenty of former ex-Broncos leegnds who could equally and effectively fill this role for us also..

Yeah, she could see that Smith didn't want to leave the Storm so she talked him into staying because she didn't want him to make a decision he would regret.

The plan was to remain in Melbourne and then once his playing days are over, move back to Brisbane.

Anyone who would see Smiths signing as a bad thing should give themselves an uppercut. Cameron Smith at 9 for the Broncos makes us a legitimate premiership threat immediately. The way he controls the ruck makes him the most dominant player I have ever seen and it would take someone extremely special to knock him off. The organisational skills he would bring to this team would elevate everyone around him in class. And seriously who cares if its for 1-2 years. You sit Turpin and Paix behind him and say just learn fellas, and then unleash them when he retires. And lets not forget his leadership skills and this is something we are extremely lacking. In fact our next signing that we make should be more about leadership than playing talent. We really need to sign a captain who can set a standard and the players will respect and follow.
I really don't think we will ever see him in our colours but if its possible I would definitely be all for it. You don't pass on a talent like Smith if he becomes available regardless of the price. I would be more than comfortable with paying him $1.5 mill and not even blinking when I wrote the cheque out.

Smith is the undisputed GOAT.
The club should be doing all they can to make this happen. Even if he declines it because of his loyalty to Melbourne then so be it; but the club needs to be able to say "we did all that we could".
Plus he will realistically be in a position much quicker to become a head coach at Brisbane then he would at Melbourne. Bellamy will stay for decades until he retires.

I'm not saying we couldn't benefit from him. We just look a bit pathetic is all. It reminds me of those desperate guys that keep going after the same chick and get used as leverage until the girl decides maybe they can squeeze something useful out of them.

he wouldn't be coming to the broncos because he loves the club and wants us to do well. he'd be coming for a fat contract in his twilight - i mean, imagine if he plays for us and we get belted by the Storm as we do every year, do you think Smith is going to be pissed off or do you think he's going to smile and chat with his mates like Croft and co did? ...If im reading your tea leaves here correctly Huge; we show a rookie coach out the door end of 2020 season and replace him......with another rookie NRL coach...?
