Broncos Player Movements and Rumours 2013

ball playing skills are one thing but another essential skill for a fullback is pace. That is why the best ones are so good at support play. I've heard Nikorima isn't quick and often compared with Norman. It will be sad if we go down that track. An injection of speed from fullback would be better for us than a ball playing fullback who is slow IMO.
Hard to tell how fast he is. Watched him quite a lot now. Positives are his support play which I rate as his best feature, he is keen and wants to be where the ball is. If you watch the 20's and someone makes a break invariably Nikorima is in support screaming for the ball so I have no worries here.
Negatives are his height and catching ability at the back. Hopefully with practice catching could improve but his height could be a liability with all the tall outside backs and their jumping ability
BTW comparing Nikorima to Norman. Nikorima looks faster and looks like he wants to play as opposed to the loping Norman who more often than not appears to lack urgency

Well round 13 has come and gone with no announcement of signings. Either there was never anything to report or they did have someone lined up but it fell through when they saw the crap we have dished up the last month.
The optimist in me is still hoping but gee whiz I feel like I am hanging over a ledge grasping at a piece of cotton.

Well, we have signed FaithinHook.

I think it's abundantly clear we are going to sign no one. Take out norman (thank god) and We are literally looking at the 2014 team. That's pretty fucking depressing

Good post mate, thanks for the info!

I wouldn't worry too much about the player's height. Look at Coote and Slater, who are two of the best high ball catchers (in both defence as well as offence), without the benefit of size.

Matty Bowen's another who comes to mind...and Barba....

Don't think anyone was talking about signing Bowen...they're talking about a lack of height not being too big of an issue for some FB's

It is getting silly now. As much as we need a star player we also need some depth in almost every position yet we continue to sign nobody. Hopefully we are working on a few deals. Would be handy if we picked up some experienced forwards to help out over the origin period next year.

It has gotten ridiculous. I honestly don't know what to think anymore

Why are the problems so obvious to the fans and media but **** all gets done.

In a nutshell, because of the arrogance that is Red Hill and people wanting to keep their jobs.

As you all know Brisbane had a knack/habit of consistently unearthing stars and those who were not necessarily stars on their own soon tapped into their ability and confidence to become one, because they were surrounded by great players.

Time goes by and slowly they retired or were moved on by WB clearing out the deck prior to his departure, that only left Locky and a few others and shortly before Locky left and all new arrivals since then, there has been not been that feeling of joining a winning team full of stars. Now they are just individuals brought into the fray to be watched analyzed and more importantly "built up" as being the next big thing.

That has happened the last few years where we as fans and the media in general has talked up the arriving players as being "worthy" when in reality, only a few of them are and of that few a couple could have become the type of players that Brisbane once had, but that is now not possible because of whom surrounds them.

Getting back to your question about it being obvious to fans, I would say that to many fans it has only been this year that people have really seen how bad the recruitment and state of the team is.

Having new coaches also coincides with this, basically everyone including the coaches are new, so everyone is trying to prove something and now that things are falling apart the pressure to not disgrace the jersey is extreme.

You would also have to question who is mates with who in Red Hill, if you happen to find then sign X player who turns out to be ordinary, or just not capable of excelling at 1st grade, then you drop or release him, then who looks bad, your mate or yourself who just signed/hired him?

The only way I can see Brisbane getting out of this rut in the near future is to replace Hook with a former proud Bronco as Coach, regardless of this persons coaching experience.
Be that Terry Matterson (who is an experienced coach) or Locky, or anyone else who has the passion and knows what is WAS like at the club, failing that, Hook will probably get replaced by Kearney which will see the club reach new lows IMHO.

A Parramatta style sweeping of the decks from the top to the bottom is what is needed obviously starting with the talent scouts and recruitment staff and of course the Coach.

If the NRL brings in a second Brisbane team within the next couple of years, then there will be even less of a desire or incentive for Qld players to sign with the Broncos and that will hurt the recruitment of Sydney based Queenslanders.

Further to that, on a positive note, now that Brisbane basically has no more players that any other club wants to sign, or young talent that could be poached, the theme of the last few years of signing and recycling former players at the wrong end of their career should come to halt.

from @crowdiegal on twitter: #NRL The Sunday Mail in QLD reports Brisbane have been linked to England forward Ryan Bailey and Melbourne's Siosaia Vave

Hopefully Vave can prove to be a good buy. Bailey is interesting. Good size and height, but will the speed and wrestle of the NRL be too much for a forward his age to adapt to quickly?
