Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2021

It is so nice to hear a player say they want to stay at the Broncos, what a nice breath of fresh air.

I am feeling in my gut that we will only lose Staggs +1, not sure who the +1 is but as long as we hold on to most of the gun talent, I am happy.

Milford. We will cut his paycheque in half no matter how well he plays this year and he will walk.

IF he had dominated in the games he has played he might be in a position to chose .
He has been serviceable , if a little soft at times . He `s not going to walk into 1st grade at the Cowboys either , so STFU and show you are 1st grade material and stop talking like you are an established 1st grader who is going to push another established 1st grader out of their position .
Still not sure Dearden said anything like 'I'm an established first choice first grader'.

No idea when this happened.

Sounds like kevie is achieving what he was brought in to do, addressing the attitude and feel of the club and playing group. This shift will also help player retention.

Even if kevie does not bring us a premiership, bringing back the broncos feel is a step towards getting us back on track and achieving that.
I noticed watching the golden point this morning I had recorded from Friday night, they went to the camera in the dressing room, there was Gordon Tallis drinking a beer and chatting to Petero. How times have changed.

This doesn’t bother me so much, the more talking heads we can get on our side the better. Let bygones be bygones, but he should probably quit his post at the titans if he wants back in these circumstances.

Agreed. Otherwise Buzz will be after him!!!

There’s actually a half decent Badel article up about the Broncos player option contracts debacle featuring quotes from Karl “Hey, it’s not my fault” Morris.

There’s actually a half decent Badel article up about the Broncos player option contracts debacle featuring quotes from Karl “Hey, it’s not my fault” Morris.

Badel has 2 articles up and both about the Fifita contract saga. the one you reference talks about how player options stopped us being able to compete with the Titans for Fifita's signature ... the second article pretty much contradicts that assertion, and Morris is quoted as saying that we determined that Fifita's position and him was worth $800k a season to the club, we were never going to offer any higher and Fifita left because the Titans chimed in with a $1.2 million a season offer, end of story.

the funny thing is that his quotes from the player options article, Morris never actually talks about player options, Badel is just implies that because that is the subject of this particular article and he needed some quotes to give him some sort of pretence of legitimacy

my guess is Badel and Meyn (both have their bylines on both articles) have asked Morris 2 completely different question one about Fifita specifically, and one about player options in general.

Karl Morris - player option article

“Every team in the NRL has the same amount of money to spend under the salary cap, it’s how you best allocate that resource,” he said.

“It’s simple maths. Everyone has a fixed amount to spend under the cap and the teams that do best handle their salary cap better than others.

“It’s imperative to get your contract structure right.

“The No. 1 desire of every football team is having the talent to be in the top four, but also having an eye to the future. As the talent comes up, the risk is you do have a David Fifita who can get poached from you.

“It’s not only what’s in your cap, it’s what is the right amount of money to pay someone.”

“I’m a bit bemused that the Broncos board gets criticism,” he said.

“We aren’t sitting in on recruitment meetings, we aren’t sitting in retention meetings, that’s for the CEO, the coach and the head of performance.

“The board does not perform the executive’s roles. That’s what they are paid to do.”

Karl Morris - Fifita Contract article

“People who want to question our culture ... let’s be honest, David Fifita was offered a $1.2 million deal by the Titans,” he said.

“We felt the position was worth $800,000 and we felt that was right for David at this stage of his career. If other clubs wish to overpay or the Titans wanted to fix a problem they felt they had by paying a lot more than we were prepared to, well that’s their option

“That’s the reality of it all. It was an option process. We got to a point where we said ‘this is what we are prepared to pay and we won’t go further’.

“I’m not going to say what the Titans have done is wrong, but the maths just didn’t work for the Broncos at the moment. David is a tremendous talent and we didn’t want to lose him ideally, but every asset can be mis-priced.

“How do you balance up the short-term and long-term contracts to have the best of both worlds? Sometimes it’s impossible.

“The culture wasn’t a factor at all. It wasn’t a great year for the Broncos and I’m not saying the environment Dave found himself in was helpful. But would Dave have left for $100,000 more or $400,000 more? Who knows.

“Dave as a 20-year-old had to decide between $800,000 and $1.2 million. That’s a huge differential. He has a short window as an athlete to make that sort of money so I wish David all the best and hope he succeeds at the Titans.”

Titans co-owner Darryl Kelly - Fifita Contract article

“The fact he is a highly-paid player to me is immaterial,” he said.

“He’s only got to do his job. He doesn’t have to win every game for us.

“It’s a team sport. The other players have to get to the level they were at (last year) so he can do that one-percenter that wins you a game.

“If they don’t do their job, he can’t do his.

“He is still a young player learning the game. He thinks Justin (Holbrook, coach) can teach him a lot more about playing football.”

Titans coach Justin Holbrook - Fifita Contract article

“He is the best young forward in our game,” Holbrook said. “With the bigger dollars you want them to be game-changers, not necessarily what position they play.

“He will be fine (with the salary expectations). One thing I have said to him is not to worry about that. He is coming to play back row in our team and that’s it.

“Yeah, he’s getting paid a lot of money but that doesn’t matter to me. He just needs to come on and do his job in the back row for us. That’s what I assured him.

“There is a bit of expectation there but I just want him to come and play footy.

“I am excited to be coaching him. He is so young and raw. There is a lot of upside to that.

“He is not a goalkicking halfback. He doesn’t have a big expectation as a team member.”

What this does show is two things:

1. He threw White, Seibold and Nolan? under the bus.
2. At least two of those three are gone!

I still can’t believe we were going to pay Fifita 800k, that’s fucking disgusting.
Exactly... take it as a favour... I was the only one from the moment he signed with the titans that saw that as a positive the reality is he shows up very rarely with a great try and the rest of the time he is not worth a cent over 400k

Here's a funny one. The Shit Factory is making up a rumour that the big hairy man behind the Parkwood public toilets is going to get poached by the Ipswich Inkjets:

But I thought the Bundaberg born, maroochydoore educated, south Brisbane and Canberra playing meninga was gold coast through and through?!??!

I've had a long held suspicion that meninga hates the Broncos and will do anything to get to them.
I don't think it's a coincidence that since he has been maroons coach players have been more, or in fact happier to leave their home state to get a contract. Yes it's always happened a lot, and yes there are more scouts then ever up here from "melbourne" and Sydney clubs and even kiwi and Canberra links but I've never seen players less willing to stay in Brisbane with all their family, friends and more affordable living with sunshine. We should always be paying less to get queenslanders, always.
It wouldn't have been hard for him to have a quiet word about options to players when he's in that position.
Imagine being the star QLD player he was yet not being part of that amazing QLD team in 92 and 93. Street parades and front and back page news that your friends and family read and you're stuck in Canberra haha There's bound to be some animosity there..

They’ve also got $1.2m a year waiting for Munster as well....

There's a question. If the second Brissy team comes in as expected and is announced in July as expected for a 2023 start, are they able to start making 2023 offers to players immediately or will they have to wait until November officially like everyone else?

I fully expect the NRL to make an 'exception' in this case.
