Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

Rothfield says he got a text from Hunt first thing this morning:

“Hi Buzz, can confirm the club has been made aware of my request for a release.”
Says that there's talk he doesn't want to return to the club after Origin - that he's played his last game for the Dragons. Officially, he's been refused.

Gotta wonder why he would be requesting an immediate release unless he has a better club to go to, and one that is apparently in qld…

I’m sure he appreciated Kevvie attending his 300th game dinner a few weeks ago too.

I'm surprised Bennett's name hasn't come up yet.

Long term phins might make sense, but it wouldn’t explain the immediate release, to me that sounds like he can go to a club in contention this year.
He's the one who's supposed to have money up his sleeve. The only way I can see it working for us is if we offered Paix immediate release to the Dragons. He's pretty much dead weight on our books, and deserves much better.

Maybe we were laying the groundwork to squeeze him out early.
Apparently $250k is all hunt would cost for the rest of the season, surely if we offered him hooker and a shot at winning a comp this year he would jump at it. Long term it doesn’t cost us anything.

you're forgetting one crucial factor ... The Dragons are not going to release him

If he played 9 for us we WOULD win the premiership, regardless of who (Billy, obviously) Kevvie has coming off the bench.

Imagine a spine where Ezra Mam is your weakest link. ****.

can the dragons really be suprised after the way they handled hook this year either fire him or back him but dont **** someone around saying oh you will have to re apply for your job for next year when to everyone with two brain cells it is clear you are going in a different direction.

And they weren’t going to sack hook either.. They all say that, until they do. At the end of the day a club can’t justify keeping a player that publicly doesn’t want to play for you. They are a lost cause for this season anyway, best cut their losses and start fresh next year.

which actually goes against us (assuming we either want him, or have room in the cap for him)

The Dragons board would know they're are a lost cause for this year. so they can hold out for 2 weeks and give Flanagan a chance to change his mind in the off season.

If Flanagan can't change his mind, then yes he'll probably be granted a release in the off season.

p.s. on the hook sacking, the board telegraphed this when it was revealed he would have to re-apply for his job ... and that was revealed at the start of the season.

or you use what’s left of the year to build into next year.

I dunno, I just got hit with a sickening premonition of Hunt joining us mid season and taking us to the next level, easily making our way to the finals only for a Hunt error to lose it for us again.

I'm still kinda in disbelief we finally have a top tier fullback, I've been waiting so long for the Broncos to join the modern game in that regard. If we pick up a top tier 9 as well that'd be amazing.
We actually have two: if you count Tristan Sailor. He did a fine job of covering for Walsh. He's at least NRL standard, without any glaring flaws like Isaako, Niu, Milford and latter day Boyd. He's even an upgrade on Te Maire.
