Broncos Vs. Panthers - Build Up Thread

If anything, it was pretty much the last nail on Michaels coffin.

Which I felt was a little unfair.

Wallace and Parker had all the time in the world to snap Sutton, Michaels on the other hand had to take on a run-away backrower/giant centre everytime.

He was still woeful, but I felt Wallace and Parker were always just as responsible for that night.

Pretty hard to pick a team as they were all so good last night. I'd like to see McGuire retain his spot, in such a short time he made plenty of metres and tackles. Dodds needs to hit it up more still, his defence is amazing though.

Not a bad side Lyn, but is Setu injured? I know he hobbled off after his first stint. If not, then he deserves a bench spot, I would have Anderson starting instead of Sims which wouldn't leave any room for Dodds and McGuire. Oh yes, if Kemp is fit, I would have him in the lineup instead of Winterstein, he simply does not belong in first grade. I would also give Hunt a start as well, I reckon his play of the balls are much quicker than Maccas.

Macca has to be there as his defence is 100% better than Hunt's though Ben is improving.

Personally depending how Locky goes Wednesday, I'd look to rest him and play Norman at #6 again. Preserve the old fellow for another day.

Agree about Macca, disagree about Locky. We need to give ourself every chance of keeping up this momentum for as long as we can. I know Norman has proven he is more than capable of filling the #6 role but if Locky comes through alright, play him. Same goes for Folau and Thaiday.

Also, any word on whether or not Kenny will be right? Going to assume he will be.

1. Hoffman
2. Winterstein
3. Glenn
4. Folau
5. Yow Yeh
6. Lockyer
7. Wallace
8. Tronc

10. Kenny

12. Teo
13. Parker

14. Hunt
15. Sims
16. Gillett
17. Anderson

Tough to drop Dodds and Setu as they are both going very well but only room for 17 and I think Sims deserves to stay in the team at the moment. And I really rate Anderson.

Don't see why Kenny should be an automatic selection if he ever ends up being fit again. It's not like any of the forwards are letting us down. I reckon he bides his time until injury/suspension or one of the forwards has a shocker.

I'd go with:

1. Hoffman
2. Winterstein
3. Glenn
4. Folau
5. Yow Yeh
6. Lockyer
7. Wallace
8. Tronc
9. McCullough
10. Setu
11. T'eo
12. Thaiday
13. Parker
14. Hunt
15. Gillett
16. Sims
17. Anderson

Agree completely, though can't decide which 2 out of Sims, Anderson, Dodds and Mcguire deserve to be there. Broncos lifted a heap with McGuire on the weekend. he was on fire!

And Kenny would still be considered for the bench.

I didn't pick Setu because it was such a close call between all the forwards and the fact that he won't be with us next year helped me make my selection a lot. McGuire deserves to be there after that performance IMO. He came out and hit hard in tackles and got really involved in hitting the ball up and it was obvious that he wanted to prove he was worthy of being picked next week. In less minutes he got twice as much work done as Setu according to the statistics.

I would normally start Aderson ahead of Sims too but this is just his 2nd game back and plus he generally plays better from the bench so thats why i chose it like that.

Why doesn't Winterstein belong in first grade? I would give Kemp a few weeks in QLD Cup and if he is firing and Winterstein is still playing the same (solid) then I would probably give Kemp a chance.

rest locky. i think its the perfect time to keep the confidence/momentum going with norman at 6 while the rest of the side is playing so well.

I don't necessarily believe the two best props have to start the game. Today's game is not really like that anymore. Bench props and starting props are equally important and you really have to select your bench based on who the better props off the bench are rather then selecting your best two to start then the other two on the bench.

Agree 100%. Your best prop can still play plenty of minutes even if they start on the bench. I think it's just a matter of prestige these days.

The team for Friday..

1. Josh Hoffman
2. Antonio Winterstein
3. Alex Glenn
4. Israel Folau
5. Jharal Yow Yeh
6. Darren Lockyer
7. Peter Wallace
8. Shane Tronc
9. Andrew McCullough
10. Lagi Setu
11. Ben Te'o
12. Sam Thaiday
13. Corey Parker

Interchange:
14. Ben Hunt
15. Matt Gillett
16. Mitchell Dodds
17. Ashton Sims
18. Nick Kenny
19. Scott Anderson
20. Josh McGuire

Can't argue with that, very tough to trim the bench though. Anderson and McGuire were very good on Sunday. Perhaps resting Thaiday would be an option considering the depth we've got at the moment.

I don't think you'd miss much if Sam rested. Against Penrith it's not going to be a really gritty forward battle where you need someone to bust the game open up the middle. Starting with Sims or Gillett in the back row would be more than adequate.

I was really really impressed with Anderson and McGuire on the weekend, but it seems inevitable they will miss out unless Kenny, Thaiday and Sims make way. Even then only one of them will make it. Quite remarkable position we're in now, needing to work out who to leave out when 6 weeks ago the coaching staff were scratching their heads as to who to put in!

Broncos team as per Broncos website!!!!

1 Josh Hoffman
2 Antonio Winterstein
3 Alex Glenn
4 Israel Folau
5 Jharal Yow Yeh
6 Darren Lockyer (c)
7 Peter Wallace
8 Shane Tronc
9 Andrew McCullough
10 Lagi Setu
11 Ben Te'o
12 Sam Thaiday
13 Corey Parker (c)
Interchange:
14 Ben Hunt
15 Matt Gillett
16 Mitchell Dodds
17 Ashton Sims
18 Nick Kenny
19 Scott Anderson
20 Josh McGuire

Almost as big as the NSW side named last monday

I'd be 110% behind resting Thaiday, I would probably drop Dodds off the bench out of any of them. Great in defence but really adds nothing in attack.

Do we really need Ben Hunt and Andrew McCollough in the same side??? If need be Alex Glen could switch to hooker if worst comes to worse. My team would read

1. Hoffman
2. Winter
3. Glen (if we really need him to play hooker he can)
4. Folau
5. Yow Yeh
6. Lockyer
7. Wallace
8. Tronc
9. McCollough
10. Setu
11. Teo
12. Thaiday
13. Parker

14. Kenny
15. Anderson
16. Sims
17. Gillet

IMO allows for a much stronger foward pack.

Hunt changes things up when he comes on. Provides better service out of dummyhalf and a genuine kicking game.

McCullough is best to start with his better defence, but his slow service out of dummyhalf drives me mad. He can't throw more than 5-10 metres without taking a step to wind up. Too slow.

Plus having Hunt there gives us cover in the halves.

I just like that our team is so versatile with backrowers able to play in the backs and in the pack.

Then lets pick Ben Hunt, I think his defence is getting a lot better. I just hate having two hookers in the team when we have a guy in the starting side (Alex Glen) that could play hooker if we needed him too. It makes our foward pack a bit weaker too.

IMO pick one of the two and tell the other he is unlucky. I would prefer to see four fowards on the bench especially agiansnt the Panthers who have a good pack!!
