Darren Lockyer is a better five-eighth then Brad Fittler.

There is nothing more to it. Darren Lockyer is the greatest five-eighth since 1990. Deal with it.

Nice arguments to back that up

As for Fittler? Pffft.

I challenge you to go back through his career and find where he's snatched victory for his team when it's been under the pump. He was a CLASSIC of going missing in action when the going got tough, albeit a great champion when his team was on top.

The only thing Fittler had greater than Lockyer was his defence, but ****, I could probably tackle better than Locky. That's not the point.

Also should be noted much of Fittler's career, particularly in rep, was played at centre and lock because he couldn't displace Laurie Daley from five-eighth.

Finally some good arguments. I can't disagree with you on any of that. My point was that based on broncospwn arguments, Fittler should be considered a better 5/8th. Whether that is the case in reality, is debatable, and you put up some very good arguments why this isn't the case. At least your views are based on fact, not just "Lockyer is the bestest, man".

As a fan of the game and after watching many, many games over the years you develop the ability to determine who is a great player, and work out who you think is up there as the best.

Lockyer is a better player than Fittler was. He is revered and spoken of by fans and commentators alike as possibly the best to play the game. FIttler is not. Plain and simple.

Yep. The reason I agree with the assertion that Locky's the best five-eighth since Lewis is that he's a rarity in the modern game - a natural footballer. Nobody reads the game in a split second better than Lockyer, I don't think even Johns had the vision Locky does. The fact Locky was so amazing at fullback when that wasn't his natural position (he was a five-eighth or centre through junior rep teams) isn't so much that that was his best position, it was that he's such a naturally gifted and talented footballer you could put him anywhere in the backline and he would be unbelievably good.

Fittler was similar, he could be just at home at centre, five-eighth or lock. And he was a natural footballer too, but as I said earlier, had a tendency to disappear in tough tight games.

Laurie Daley probably had less of the football brain but was an excellent competitor with enough flair to complement the likes of Stuart and Johns who were outstanding organisers etc, good footballers.

Wally Lewis if anything didn't have Locky's natural athleticism. He was more solid, more about robustness and strength, than timing, flair and speed. That's not to say Lewis was without flair...he was a dynamite playmaker, the best passing game I've ever seen, and an incredible long kicking game considering the balls of his era were like kicking bricks. The thing about Lewis is he was complete. He could create a try with a crisply timed pass to his outside backs. He could create a try by hitting it up like a forward and offloading to a speed man in support. He could control the play and let someone else put the try on. He could intimidate his opposition with big defence. He could put the opposition under pressure with precision kicking.

It's why Lewis is regarded by any decent judge as the best player the game has seen, at least in the last 40 years.

Lockyer, Langer and Johns are probably on the next tier (maybe Fulton too but I didn't see him play).

The likes of Fittler, Daley etc probably a further rung below.

I have said in tons of places over the last few years that Fittler played 300+ average games ... he was an elite first grader with longevity on his side, nothing else

Jamie Lyon is in the same boat in my view ... rep honours largely undesevered in my view ... looks terrific when his side is cutting the opposition to shreds ... goes MIA otherwise

Oink !

Lol, that's not a bad comeback. If Lockyer can win the game for the broncos tonight with another 50m field goal, I'll accept he's the best [icon_razz1

Soooo, this thread is about Hunt right?

Burg, Most people in here have a obsession with Lockyer, when they hear his name they just cream themselves.
Get over it, and get back to the topic, if you want to talk about how great Lockyer is and how much you want to suck his balls then open another thread.

so your saying you wouldn't suck Lockyers balls???

^^ He is crazy, 99% of this forum would die for that chance!

Just a very quick point, as much of a God as Locky is - his tackling technique/success is below par. Harsh criticism maybe, but it's a factor that is constant imo.

Brisbane Broncos full-back Karmichael Hunt is on the verge of switching codes, with former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones confirming he has had talks with the Origin and Kangaroos star over a move to Japanese rugby union.

Jones, who is an adviser to Japanese club Suntory, has held informal talks with Hunt's management and plans to step up negotiations when he returns to Japan in the next fortnight.

The news comes only days after the Broncos terminated contract talks with Hunt.

Brisbane pulled out of negotiations after Hunt failed to accept a three-year deal with the club worth more than $1million.

Since then, Hunt - who played rugby union at high school - has spoken publicly of his desire to explore his options elsewhere, including rugby union both here and abroad.

.....

While the change of scenery would be a challenge for Hunt it would be a lucrative move given he is also in talks with French rugby union clubs over the prospect of playing in that country when the NRL season comes to an end.

Under the audacious plan being explored by Hunt's management, the Queensland and Australia full-back would go straight to France when his Broncos commitments are over.

He would then join Suntory when the Japanese rugby union season begins in 2010.

The combined deals could be worth more than $800,000, although that figure would translate to more than $1million when tax breaks and allowances are included, an amount which would easily eclipse his potential earnings in the NRL.

I have said the same thing about every player who has said they want to switch to union - if he wants to go let him.

+10000000 Flutterby.

Name me a legend who played in France? Also, name me a single player who played in Japan?

I have said this since 2006, the TRUE greats of our game, the Immortals and legends, don't switch around, their skill makes their names for them.

When Hunt is in his mutil-million dollar house, sipping a chardy and telling his son about his playing days, he can explain the jerseys on the wall and what they mean to him.

Good luck to him.
