Broncos withdraw offer for Hunt

What's so bad about wanting to earn as much as you possibly can in your profession?

Don't you want to be paid well for the work you do?

Keep in mind that the term "greedy" is subjective.

Nothing, had he signed at those figures then I would have said good on him, but dragging it out for a couple extra grand even another $50k - at these numbers - just doesn't seem to comprehend why you'd need to. $50k/yr could go into jnr development, $400k or $450k seriously is only extra tax.

Broncos to switch Darren Lockyer to fullback with Karmichael Hunt set to leave.

Steve Ricketts | March 18, 2009 12:00am
THE Broncos may look to extend captain Darren Lockyer's career by returning him to fullback next year, with Karmichael Hunt increasingly likely to defect to an overseas league or rugby union club. The switch of Lockyer to the custodian spot, where he first rose to fame in 1997, was one of the options raised at a meeting at the Broncos yesterday called to discuss the club's 2010 playing roster.

Chief executive Bruno Cullen said such a move would have the added benefit of reducing the veteran's defensive workload.

"It could help prolong his career," he said.

Lockyer, who turns 32 next Tuesday, played fullback until 2004 when Hunt made his debut.

Barely a news article, but still it's interesting how they might be thinking.

I'm wondering if the possibility of a move to fullback for Lockyer in 2010 (should Hunt leave) is a way to ensure Ben Hunt stays with the club, by opening up a spot in the halves for him. eusa_think

1. Lockyer
6. Wallace
7. Ben Hunt

Wallace was originally a 5/8 at Penrith... so its not like he's not used to playing there. And Locky well he's one of the best fullbacks ever to play so there's nothing new for him there. Only question is whether Ben Hunt is ready, hopefully they blood him a bit this year to see how he keeps up with 1st grade. With the speed of the game picking up with two refs having small quick halves will be of growing importance.... just look at Sandow last week!

so heres a thought. Hunt announces that he has signed with a japanese union team, does if get dropped from the squad like hodges did and we start re structuring our team now or if stays put?

I recon fullback would be far easyer on Locky's body then 5/8. Remember he'd only be making a couple tackles a game at fullback where-as every barsted in the NRL runs at him all game up in the front line. I think if he goes to full back we could milk an extra year out of him, not too different to what the titans have done with preston campbell. Don't quote me on it but wasn't locky voted best QLD fullback of all time? Plus we have options at 5/8 in Ben Hunt or McCullough just about ready to go.

You serious? No way man.

Lockyer hardly makes that many tackles as it is in defence. Watch him he'll always be the 3rd man in and always drops off. He always has someone beside him taking the full brunt of the hit. Lockyer's "work" in defence is a common misconception - He's really no that involved. To add to that, he doesn't take on the line that much either.

In Fullback he'd be running back and returning the ball. Returning the ball into the defence would be worse on his body by far.

Seconding this. Look how Hunt's brain has been affected by all the kick returns he's had to do over the past 4 years - can't even accept a decent offer or find his way to the toilets (by himself). Poor guy.

Rocky I totally disagree. Lockyer is often the first man into tackles, taking the initial impact, then someone else comes in to clean up. Not to mention making 23 tackles versus Hunt's 1. Running the ball back can take a lot out of you, but as the attacking player you tend to have more influence over the speed of the collision. He doesn't have to get smashed all the time if he doesn't want to, and he gets worked over every time he gets tackled at 5/8 anyway.

I don't know how I feel about him moving there, but I really think fullback is far less physically demanding than 5/8.

Another perspective on the whole thing:

It is believed that Hunt hasn’t so much brushed aside the Broncos as merely put talks on hold as he waits for the club to secure the services of Lockyer for 2010.

The pair are close friends and Hunt is reluctant to put pen to paper if it means Lockyer, 32 next week, is squeezed out at Red Hill.

If Lockyer does re-sign in the coming weeks it could open the door for Hunt and the Broncos to return to the negotiating table.

“All I will say is that yes, he is close to ‘Locky’… so you can read between the lines.â€Â

I guess it just goes to show how little we all know about the situation, and how many different scenarios are possible.

Maybe there still is some hope.. Sounds like Hunt wants Lockyer to stay before he signs which is reasonable IMO..

If he's put off signing to help his mate Locky get a better deal, my opinion of him will rise pretty fwarking high.

especially as his deal will probably be less than originally offered.

Hodges was only dropped from the squad because he went behind WB's back.

In fairness though, Hodges wasn't really in the same league at that stage of his career as Hunt is. If Hunt was only a developing player has Hodges was in those days, I'd be all for dropping him and trying to skill someone else up. Why skill someone up to have an opposition team benefit from it?

Lol, Lockyer at Fullback. Why would our most important player want to sign on for another 2 years to do more work in attack and smash his body into the defensive line 15 times a game?

No logic. Zero logic.

Couldn't Lockyer just do a Matty Bowen and almost refuse to run back into the defence from a kick return??? Pass it to the wingers, let them get belted - that looks to be the way the Cowboys do it
