Exactly this! Now I dont think we will get him, but at the end of the day if he wants to go they cant keep him once his contract has expired. They can offer him 2 million and scarlett johanson but if he wants to leave hes free to do that

IMO, it will come to a point where Manly will have to choose between DCE and Foran, but it is unlikely they will be able to keep them both.

While most of you think we will not get DCE and you are probably right, my thoughts are there is a very tiny window of about 15% which we need to go hard for while it is there

IMO, it will come to a point where Manly will have to choose between DCE and Foran, but it is unlikely they will be able to keep them both.

OR they might realise just how important a halves pairing like that is, and shed players around them to keep them together ??

Kinda like The Storm have done with the Big 3.

Their other big name players are injury prone or getting close to retirement, DCE and Foran would be their highest two priorities.

They will make cuts in the forwards too, they're not afraid of just playing hard working players not big names. Horo and Brenton Lawrence were two of the best buys of the year and would have cost them nothing.

I for one think their books are fine, Kite and Rose would be ok money, and no replacements are coming in. They also let other players like Hopoate and Oldfield go in recent years, again not huge cash but every exit counts. Lyon is definitely on huge unders too.

Hopoate & Williams are the only big names that they've let go, while their younger players have only got better. If you look at what happened to the Storm, they had to shed Hoffman (who's come back), Chambers (who's come back), Inglis, Folau, J Smith, Johnson, White was on good money too, now Widdop etc. Looking at Manly, their successful big-names are eerily comparable. While not at the same level as Slater & Smith, their spine would still command big dollars. Yet they're still hanging on to their versions of J Smith & Hoffman (Stewart & Watmough), their Folau & Inglis (Matai & Lyon), and remember they are retaining all 4 spine players, not just the 3 that Melbourne kept.

Something a lot of people seem to be overlooking is that you have to look at the salary of these blokes when they signed on to the Eagles, not what they seem like they're worth right now.

Training under Hasler and Toovey has made a lot these guys look to be worth a lot more than when they started (see Melbourne Storm and Bellamy).

But that's totally being cancelled out by the fact that these re-signings are happening now. Lyon & BStewart are both unsigned for next year, hence the contract they sign will be based on their current standing. Foran was signed when he was being targeted by everyone, hence even if it's not $650k, it would still be a lot. DCE re-signed I believe after guiding them to a GF in his rookie year. Watmough, Ballin, GStewart, Matai, they've been at their peak since at least their '08 GF, you can't tell me they all signed for 6 or 7 years at rookie wages. And as for the improvers, like Taufua, Horo, Lawrence etc, yes they were signed for not much money, but they were all 1 or 2 year deals, and will need re-signing (and upgrading) soon. Hence the reason that most of us believe that even if they are within the cap now, they will most certainly be well over it if they manage to retain all of their big talent over the next year or so.

You've compared two of the best players in the world with one great player and one occasionally great player with that Folau and Inglis comparison, it's apples and oranges mate.

That storm team had blokes like Crocker barely cracking the bench in the prime of his career.

This Manly team carries blokes like George Rose. They will soon have cap problems with the likes of Taufua, Lawrence and Horo paying out of their pay grade, but I have a feeling they won't lose anyone they don't want to.

Lyon who is widely considered the best centre in the game. Fair call on matai. Two of their backrowers are in the top two or three in the country at their role. Better than Crocker smith Johnson and Hoffman. They need to shed players. Consider the fact that they had zero cap space at the start of the season. How much extra will they get next year? I'd say they earned a maximum of $250k through trades with Lyon and Williams and symonds still to sign.

One of the reasons he wants to stay at Manly is because he knows that he and Foran have a great combination that will keep them successful for many years. Foran leaves and he has one less reason to stay.
