Look, he has to get 4 weeks. It may have been fairly minor but the bar is set. You cant throw the book at someone for not dobbing on their mother, then let a guy off for "only being an idiot".
It sends a terrible message otherwise, that you can play the fool anyway you like as long you regularly make the 13. Furthermore penalising him less means consistency goes out the window and any further actions against players are just official "bullying" based on how well we need them.
The haas incident is less than a year ago with exactly the same officials in place.

But will it look different? What does "not cooperating with the integrity unit" even mean? A failure to give a statement? A refusal to answer? Or deliberate lying?
There are differences to those things, but at the end of the day his response was inconsequential to the action whilst fiffita was the chief provocateur.
Surely an action that deliberately casts a shadow on the game is more consequential than the failure to respond in a bid to show loyalty to family?
If not, what world do we live in that people think that is fair?

Mate with all due respect, I think that failing to cooperate with an official investigate by the integrity unit of your sport ranks as a more serious issue than a drunken incident with a security guard involving no injury to anyone. If the compensation paid (if any was paid) comes out of his pocket as well, a small fine and 1-2 weeks is just punishment. Hopefully it will have the same impact on him that it did on Haas and he will come back next year and play out of his skin for us.

Yeah but I think not cooperating is dealt with fairly severely in much the same way as it is with the Police etc. It's necessary for them to use as leverage to ensure people comply with any investigations.

If you refuse to submit for a random breath test for example then it's viewed much the same as a serious DUI offence and I'm guessing in Haas's case it was much the same.

So you would put a higher a value on the protection of a corporate entity, than the defence of the integrity and wellbeing of your family? Even if that may have serious consequences to their lives?
Then we have fiffita, who is rewarded in comparison for co-operating with the integrity unit with a reduced sentence due soley for the fact, that without that cooperation he would probably be locked up still? All that is assuming he does of course but isn't it in the interest of every person caught red-handed to cooperate?

Yeah I get your point. I'm just trying to understand where the NRL draws the line given NAS and TPJ both served their suspensions during the Test matches as well.

Not a suspended fine, he needs to be fined. NAS did miss 3 tests which is effectively 75k if I'm not mistaken. Take a tough stance and stand him down for the trials if they want

I wonder if you are being deliberately obtuse or you genuinely do not get it. It is not what value I put on anything or what I consider in a contest between the well-being of my family etc.

From the perspective of Haas' employer and the governing body of the sport he plays to earn his substantial income, they view a failure to participate in an ongoing investigation by the integrity unit as a very serious matter. Haas made a personal choice of putting his family above his obligations to his employer and the governing body. A fair percentage of people will say that was a correct decision, others will disagree, but it warranted punishment.

Now Fifita, if he was to now refuse to assist the Integrity Unit fully in their investigation of his incident, it would be a like for like case warranting similar punishment.

A 19 year old, getting on the piss and making a stupid split second decision in the nature of a prank in my view of a spectrum of offences falls short of the actions of Haas and also falls short of the conduct of NAS three weeks earlier. Hence, a lesser penalty is justified.

It is not his cooperation with the integrity unit that gets him a lesser penalty, it is the nature of his offence. Or do you believe that if you get done for shoplifting that warrants the imposition of the same penalty as for assault occasioning grievous bodily harm? Does that make my position clear for you?
