Five-eights are rarely just second receivers these days so they are definitely interchangeable in a lot of cases. Not needing to be able to kick consistently well is not a BS cop out excuse because he would have two of the best kickers ever playing alongside him meaning he could be a very good third option kicker. Kicking is the only thing DCE has done better than Hunt over the last 1.5 years. Hunt's defense and running game shits all over anything DCE has shown since 2014.
Many people seem to think Milford to fullback, Hunt to five-eight and Ash Taylor to half is a viable option for the Broncos. I would like to hope you're one of those who argue that Hunts abilities don't transfer to five-eight next time that discussion is had.
DCE has a lot of things to work on too, like being able to win games for his team like Hunt did pretty often last year. I'm sure that loyalty to a player who has been there more often in the past isn't the reason why Hunt "didn't get a look in", right?
Based on this years form, no doubt, Hunt looks like the better player. Doesn't mean he's the best player for the job, as I've discussed a lot.
The discussion has been done to death. I don't need to talk about his skills being transferred, because my ideal Broncos team is one where Ashley Taylor plays for another team (because there is no space for him here), Boyd is FB, Hunt is HB, and Milford is 5/8. But that's a discussion for another thread. I also think those many people are wrong, but that's fine, I could be too.
Of course the loyalty was part of the reason he was picked. It's one of the major differences between the QLD side of the past 10 years and the NSW side. We are a team that has worked together for years, while NSW pick a new team year in year out.
If you're happy to throw someone unerdone like Hunt into origin, with the risk that comes with it, then that's fine. I'd prefer not to, and leave it until next year when he's sorted his game out.
As for DCE. I think he's a better halfback through and through. Do I think in a year or so that will be the case? Absolutely not.
