NEWS Dodgy Deal: Broncos accused of deception by Schoolboys captain

From what I can gather the so-called "promise" of a top 30 spot related to "in 2023" not for "all of 2023." I understand he will turn 18 sometime this year. Blake Mozer was added to the Top 30 this year, so it's not necessarily an outrageous ambition for the kid, but to "promise" it is a bit steep.

I guess it's possible they encouraged him to think that to get him to sign. The club has a known track record of sweetening negotiations with hypnotic gestures - like future captain (Payne), playing in the halves (Kotoni), shot at fullback (Herbie) - that don't always pan out.
But if he meant a top 30 spot later in the year than why are they saying he was so shocked and heart broken when he saw the squad list announced? Even though there’s still a spot available and players may move on yet?

How have we even broken that promise before the year has even began?

There's no way he's even close to physically ready.

What kind of idiot would make that promise..and what kind of bigger fool would believe that promise.

I think it's an excuse.

I'm only guessing but I think it's 100% about his agent telling him he can get more money elsewhere and the Broncos are ripping him off. He's clutching every straw within reach to create drama and play the victim card so the Broncos will want to get rid of him. Now he's left with flat out refusing to adhere to the terms of his contract.

I can't see how this can end well for either party. The NRL needs to step in at this point and ensure if he goes to another club he doesn't get a pay rise, and even better, that the Broncos are somehow compensated (unlikely).

I agree completely but the NRL will continue to turn a blind eye because the Dolphins need a squad and need to be successful

Oloapu:
"I just want a release and a chance to play football," .

"I can promise you one thing: I will never play for Brisbane as long as I live.

"They have broken promises to me and left me broken-hearted."

Also claims that the broncos have lied about being cleared of any wrong doing. Salary cap auditor says it’s still being investigated:

"We are still looking into the matter; no final determination has been made,"

Isn’t he 17? Why would we give him a top 30 spot if he can’t even play NRL?
Not a fan of that kind of attitude. Regardless of what the he feels the Broncos have done, you just get your head down and do your best. He should be stood down and not allowed to play any code until his contract is up. If it turns out we have done the wrong thing he should be released, but as it stands he needs to suck it up

Interesting to read the posters jumping up and down about KW not meeting this kid when it was obvious the original story was BS.

"Promised a top 30 spot"
Promised his preferred position of 6"

at fucking 16?

People believed that?
It's not a matter of believing. Walters has either met the kid or hasn't. The kid says he hasn't and Walters has not contradicted him. I am surprised that Walters hasn't been involved by now, especially if there were a chance he could recover the situation. So no, Walters is not off the hook.

Pretty simple solution here. He can train with the QC squad for 3 years, and be named 18th man each week for them. If another club wants him, they can pay a solid transfer fee or trade a player. If this doesn't suit, he can sit out for 3 years with no footy.
Pretty good suggestion. We could trade him for Isaako. I bet that could happen.

I agree with you its a lot of crap but the promised his preferred position at 6 wasn’t in terms of playing first grade it was in terms of how he is playing footy whether that be MM, Q-cup or first grade he in my opinion deserves the right to say hang on a minute I don’t want to play Lock and hooker. It isn’t a game or 3 week fill in thing it’s the club saying we are going to make you the best half in Australia for his age a Lock. Only thing I can remotely have remorse for his situation is the positional debate.

The NRL hasn't turned a blind eye. It's backed the Broncos. But it does look like the onus has been placed on the Broncos as to what to do next: they can destroy this kid's life (or next three years in rugby league) or they can draw a line through him. I don't think there's a lot to be gained by appeasing the more vindictive nature of fans wanting revenge, but a precedent does need to be set. In that sense, it should be up to the NRL to be the tough guy.

I'm not sure they have the teeth to punish the Dolphins given at this point they are denying everything and the kid is making it about the Broncos. But they certainly could prevent him from playing in the NRL.

If our contract with him has no issues, unless we are paid a fee by the Dolphins or whoever want him, the bloke is staying for 3 years. And if he doesn't turn up to work, he doesn't get paid.

Dolphins can have him, but any time in the next ten years we get the right to take one Dolphins player of equivalent value to Karl at that time. So if he is a superstar in five years time, we can take someone of the same value off them.

He's been in the Academy since he was 13yrs old ... talk about biting the hand that feeds you .. kick the ungrateful prat out of the nest and see how he flies out there, we'll be sure to give him a hearty welcome when he comes back with whichever mob gives him his thirty pieces of silver.

It's not that unbelievable. They promise some of these young kids the world to get them to sign.
