They didn't seem over during the Four Nations. The Australian players got on board too. Mal went again this year saying Lodge shouldn't be signed and Broncos are wrong.

He had a long chat with Bennett over in England and they sorted it all out.

IF Wayne Bennett wants to take my job, he will have to quit his post at the Broncos to do it.
Wayne’s year-long, persistent and ongoing objection to my appointment as Kangaroos coach and his obvious frustration at being overlooked for the job, seem to have been born out of his own lack of understanding about what the role actually entails.
Yes, coaching the Kangaroos in rugby league matches — like the Four Nations opener against Scotland — is a big part of my job.
But it is only a part of my job, not the only part.
The vast majority of my role is spent working on the game itself, not on the team.
My time is divided between the Kangaroos, Jillaroos, Junior Kangaroos and Australian Schoolboys teams, as well as re-establishing the standards and culture around playing for your country that had been allowed to erode over time.

My role also involves laying the foundations and pathways for players who aspire to play for Australia, creating strategies and structures to return international football’s credibility and relevance, lifting the profile of international league and contributing to the commercial aspects of all those elements.
These are all critical and time-consuming tasks. Would I be able to do all of those things and coach an NRL club at the same time?
No, and nor would Wayne or any other coach in the NRL.
It is a job well beyond formulating a game plan and running training sessions.
My beef with Wayne is not that he wanted the Australian job. I have no problem with ambition.
What disappoints me is that, as a grown man and a professional, he should be able to accept the decision once it has been made.

It does annoy me that he is in the background chipping away, trying to undermine my authority and my position with the Australian Rugby League.
Maybe it is just a tactical ploy, hoping if he gets under my skin then I will take my focus off the job at hand. It’s not working.
When Wayne says he doesn’t want my job, or that we are friends who will embrace after a game, it is just not true.
I’m a man of my own convictions. I’m not looking for approval from Wayne, nor am I trying to impress him. He’s not my mentor. I don’t care what he thinks about the job that I do or the results I achieve.
I don’t think he rates me as a coach, but that’s OK.
I think Wayne believes I have done a good job with the results I have achieved, but because I don’t coach every weekend I am not what he considers a “genuine” rugby league coach.

I have a different view to Wayne about what is required from a coach at representative level, and it is a view that the Queensland Rugby League and Australian Rugby League now share.
Wayne was obviously an important part of my life when I was a young man — first at the police academy and then in football with Brisbane Souths and Canberra.
He was an influential part of my life and I am very thankful for that.
But when Wayne walked out the door at the Raiders in 1987 to coach the Broncos, our relationship ended. We went our own ways and haven’t had any sort of relationship for many years.
I know there is a perception that he and I are friends and I guess that is a part of the reason for doing this column — to set the record straight.
We’re not enemies, but we’re not friends either. There’s no bad blood — there’s just no blood at all. There is no relationship there.
We don’t talk. He runs the Emerging Origin program for Queensland, which he set up and I think is terrific.

But even while I was Queensland coach, that program had little to do with me. It existed before I was coach, it worked well, so we kept with it.
We go back a long way. But we don’t cross paths any more.
I am glad that Wayne is coaching England. His presence, and the return of Sam Burgess, has given the Four Nations series a terrific boost in profile.
Should we come together after a game, I will shake his hand the same way I do with any other opponent.
But I also hope as England coach, he can now focus his attention on his own team and worry less about what Australia and the Kangaroos are doing.
We don’t care what England do or think. Hopefully one day soon he will feel the same way about us.

Thanks....I does seem as though Mal was using the media to whinge a bit. I would have thought privately was the way to go. I didn't see any public statement from WB that he wanted the Aussie job but he may have felt that way. Accusing WB of undermining him without presenting any evidence is a bit weak too. I meam, how could he have done so if not involved in any way ? By saying Meninga was not much of a coach ? Maybe but it seems unlikely especially with Mals stunning Origin record which WB would be very aware of.

I'd say Meninga has made more of this than what actually exists. Could be wrong of course.

If you haven't noticed he not only puts down Bennett but he also puts down the Broncos. He was great player but I put Webcke, Petero and Parker before him.
 
I'm sorry, but coaching the Queensland team doesn't mean you're a good coach. You spend what 3 weeks with the players and play 3 games. Mal should test out the NRL until than he couldn't tie Bennetts shoe laces.
 
QUEENSLAND coach Kevin Walters has appealed for the Cowboys to support Johnathan Thurston should the Maroons maestro seek an Allan Langer-style Origin comeback.
Walters said he would have no hesitation picking Thurston in 2018 after the Cowboys champion flagged the possibility of a fairytale Origin return in what shapes as his final season in rugby league.
Thurston’s shoulder injury has cruelled his dream of an Origin finale this Wednesday night and the 37-game legend will instead have to settle for a special presentation in the Suncorp decider.
However, Walters believes Thurston may yet have a change of heart, with the injured Maroons ace saying last week: “If I got the call from the coach (Walters), I would probably consider it (an Origin return).”

Three legends of the code have previously resurrected their Origin careers.
In 2001, Langer returned from England to inspire Queensland’s series win, while NSW greats Brad Fittler (2004) and Andrew Johns (2005) both came out of representative retirement to help the Blues.
With Maroons halfback Cooper Cronk expected to retire at season’s end, Walters is relishing the prospect of a Thurston comeback and urged North Queensland to give him the green light.
“I hope the Cowboys would support ‘JT’ playing again,” Walters said.
“I doubt they would stop him unless they have some sort of agreement, but Paul Green (Cowboys coach) is a smart fella and he is passionate about Queensland too.
“I won’t be shutting the door on him. We may not have Cooper Cronk next year so it would be a wonderful boost to have JT available next year.
“If John wants one more season with Queensland, I will certainly be picking him.”
The Courier-Mail can reveal Thurston’s final contract with the Cowboys contains no clauses precluding him from playing representative football next year.
However, when the parties met to finalise the 12-month extension six weeks ago, there was an informal agreement that Thurston would not play for Queensland or Australia in 2018.
“All our discussions with Johnathan and his manager in regards to his contract for next year was done on the basis he would not be playing representative football,” Cowboys football operations chief Peter Parr said.
“At this point in time nothing has changed in regards to those conversations.
“Our main focus with Johnathan is that he receives the best possible care with his current shoulder injury.”
Walters said Thurston had earned the right to dictate his Origin future.
“He is up there with Wally Lewis, Allan Langer and Darren Lockyer, so if he wants to go around again, I would never say no,” he said.
“There is some unfinished business in John’s eyes, but it will be hard for JT to go past what he did in Origin II.
“I don’t know if Johnno can top that, but he has my support to go on.”

The Queensland Under 16 team for the representative clash against NSW has been finalised.
The team are now in camp on the Gold Coast preparing for the match.
The Queensland Under 16 team play New South Wales at Suncorp Stadium next Wednesday (July 12) as a curtain-raiser to State of Origin Game III.

To be fair to mal, he coached Canberra to success in the 90s but has'nt done any other club.

Mitchell he's my favourite NSW player, never lets QLD down in a crunch! Fifita's hopefully had his 'big game' for the next few months. Still nervous about it. FFS Glasby, Hunt, Papalli and likely out of position Hess very questionable bench in a crunch situation. Morgan is a carve up risk esp if they don't switch Chambers and he defends with Munster. Need to risk Wallace playing bigger minutes. If they click and the key players all stand up should be alright but a lot of ifs.

Scott is as a big a loss as JT. Badly missing Parker too went a year too early. Oates is undervalued as well, big questions of Holmes for next year if he doesn't perform. Silver lining is JT for a swansong? f**k the Cowboys if they want to withhold him.
