General Ben Barba discussion

Re: Ben Barba stood down

You're a mackay boy right nashy? I have relatives up there who know barba's family well and have nothing but bad things to say about them. You heard / know much about it? Maybe he couldnt escape his past

I don't know much about him personally. I'll have a chat with my cousin, I'm pretty sure they use to play against each other up there.

Re: Ben Barba stood down

No one is saying that's what money means. He's young, he's got more support services at his disposal than people who actually need it, and he's still a twat apparently.

Since we're all speculating about what caused his suspension, probably a multitude of minor infringements, coming to training boozed, serious gambling debts, blow up with Hasler; which might have all spawned from his break up with the ex-girlfriend, or none.

Straight out accusing him of domestic violence and then slandering his character without any evidence (and just because you put an "if he did this..." in front of it, doesn't change a thing) is pretty shitty, even for BHQ.

Sure, that's life, most young people have probably been through relationship dust ups in before and have handled it with more or less dignity. Give the guy a break until you know the facts.

Stop supporting the ideology of Australian sporting stars as role models if they are a continuous dissappointment to you and your values and the values you want for your children and society. They're no different to movie stars, TV stars - they're there for our entertainment.

Think about the "jocks" from your school days. Usually the worst behaved, most misogynist, first to drink and take drugs, least likely to do anything but train hard and succeed in sport.

From this crop comes our "sporting stars" which you expect to mirror our society's values. Good luck with that.

It doesn't matter what the circumstances are, there will be wankers prepared to defend him, no matter what he has done. And that's my point.

They are role models, that's just the thing. When you play for the elite competition, people look up to you, no matter how much people disagree and argue, and say that it's not right to look up to sports stars, they do.

Re: Ben Barba stood down

Don't we have a few Mormons playing in the NRL? Just get one of those blokes to be the 'face' of the comp. Sure, they might not be as exciting as Ben Barba or Brett Stewart, but the odds of them allegedly smacking their missus or allegedly copping a feel off a teenage neighbour is dramatically decreased.

In any case, I'll reserve judgment until I know more. It doesn't surprise me though, league will always have scandals like this.

Jesus settle the f*** down. It seems alot more serious than alcohol related stuff and there were rumours flying around that it was domestic violence, so some of us gave an opinion about how we would feel 'if' it were true. Mate last I checked this was a forum and we are entitled to our opinion.

Re: Ben Barba stood down

The rumour has to have a fair bit of weight to it if Wally Lewis is happy to say it on Channel 9 news IMO.

Re: Ben Barba stood down

Call me heartless, but I am sick & tired of sporting stars who get most things on a silver platter & then if something goes wrong they go on a 'bender' etc.

So he has split from his GF, big fucking deal.

How would he handle it if he was the chef Matt Golinksi who lost his wife & 3 daughters in a house fire or other parents who have lost children.

It's a sad indictment of society when sporting stars are 'role models'.

This is strange, the Dogs have taken his profile off their website.

Firstly I completely agree with you, secondly the bit in bold is what I mean that there is something way bigger going on here than 'needing to sort his life out'.

This. Exactly fucking this. There is absolutely no argument against it.

Lol - Mormons play dull football.

agree that is VERY strange.

i am guessing the rumours of dogs trying to sign folau last week tie in with this.

So you agree that it is a sad incictment of a society when sporting stars are role modes, but disagree that we should try to change that?

I agree that the players seem to turn relatively trifling issues into a reason to destroy themselves or hurt others, vis a vis Matt Golinski who has had the most horrible thing imaginable happen to him, come out and get on with it without much fuss it would appear.

Silver platter - while I'd like to simply train for 5 days a week and play footy for a living, they still have to work pretty hard to get there. It's not given to them on a silver platter. Look at the BHQ fitness and food thread to see how hard the average Joe finds it to make a few sacrifices.

Re: Ben Barba stood down

You make out as if these blokes wake up on their 25th birthday and want to be a footy player tomorrow.

They are conditioned into their role from the youngest of ages. Some make it, some don't.

Mate that's a cop out. Fitness etc is much easier when you have only that to do essentially. Their 'job' is to train and workout. They get up, go and train all day then go home. Most of us get up, go to work 8-10 hours a day, come home and do family responsibilities, make/have dinner, do the extra work you didnt get done at work then go to bed - somewhere in all of that you try to fit in an hour at the gym. I'll make excuses for footballers but thats garbage IMO

They are conditioned into their role from the youngest of ages. Some make it, some don't.

And the ones that are earmarked to make it (usually by the age of 12!) are wrapped in cotton wool and coddled through late adolescence into adulthood without any of the responsibility a normal 18 year old walks into after school. It's a very privileged life, and does leave them illprepared for real life problems.

A footballer having an issue with drinking, drugs and gambling? "It's ok mate, don't worry, we'll look after you".
Average kid having an issue with drinking, drugs and gambling? Lose mates. Lose job. Lose respect of family...

Of course they're not "role models", other than for other young footballers wanting to follow their footsteps. However, they're equally not "stars" or deserving of sympathy when they **** up. Such a privileged upbringing they should suck it up.

Re: Ben Barba stood down

i reckon he's gotten involved with the wrong people somewhere down the line. original break up -> party lifestyle -> bad influences -> wrong crowd. something may have finally hit home with him which led him to go to greenberg. maybe a path of self destruction, addiction. now i am also wrong for making assumptions but it would more explain the reason for being pulled out of the league and it not be a "police matter".

hes got a new missus that was supposed to be moving down to syd soon. oddly enough a mate of mine predicted two weeks ago "If his missus with kids bails back to Mackay I reckon he wont last in Sydney"

I really think people are reading too much into this "He came to us". Bullshit. You don't tatter on the edge of termination as the current Dally M medal holder after going to your boss with issues. You get caught and pulled into the office with please explain why the **** your ass shouldn't be kicked out of here.

They're looking after him. And they know that saying they caught him doing x was no good for whatever recovery he needs to make.

4 weeks. He'll be back.
