How should the club spend 800k?

I agree with what’s been said here, yes his money to extend all of:

Cobbo (+200k)
Farnworth (+100k)
Carrigan (+100k)
Flegler (same)
Paix (+100k)
Oates (-150k)
Martin (+150k)
Hetherington (+100k)

Still leaves 100k to play with I think but even then, some of these guys might only need to go up 50k. In any case, there are the benefits to losing this Payne in the Broncos’ Haas.

Re-sign all the blokes we want to keep then use whatever is left over to try and lure Walsh home.
Do you see the irony in signing the guy who would in this case be whinging his way out of his last 2 contracts?

I just can't see how we can sign Walsh if the club is anyway serious about setting standards.

Players whinge their way out of contracts all the time. They don't usually send their agent out on a rampage the day before a game to embarrass/anger a club into letting them go only to fall flat on their face. When was the last time you remember a player being booed at a home game for asking for a release before Haas?

I agree with this. In my opinion it would be a huge part of Ben Ikin's job, as football manager, to provide his coach with 30 contented players.

Feel Walsh would always be looking for a bigger pot of gold at another rainbow or screwing the club down a bit like Ponga.

He had everything folding out nicely here at the Broncos but refused to bide his time. Instead he jumped at Phil Gould's advice to **** the club and take the money who in turn fucked off to the Bulldogs.

We want players to be here for the right reasons and money isn’t one of them.

Except Haas is likely getting released in 2023 (i.e. end of this year) so the money also becomes free for 2024, and those are the ones I was looking at:
Flegler
Jensen
Cobbo (apparently in the process)
Herbie
Kobe
Paix
Pereira (as depth)

The guys off contract at the end of this year will be sorted out this year.. the guys off contract in 2024 are free to sign elsewhere by November 1... the sooner Haas goes the sooner we can access those funds for the 2024 re-signings.

Re-sign the ones we need before they hit the November 1 market.

We also have Patty coming off the year after that.. I'd be wanting to get him locked down as well.

If Haas goes, Flegler and Patty most likely become our starting prop rotation... with Jensen, Willison and co becoming the support players
I think Jensen deserves to remain in the starting side. Especially if he keeps going the way he has.

Lock down Cobbo for a minimum 3yrs.
Depending how Herbie goes at FB, we need to lock him down. I'd still like to keep him around if FB doesn't work but I think he will be asking for FB type $ for 2024.
Upgrade Mam next year + extend for 2yrs.
Lock up Hethrington for 2-3yrs.
Somehow ensure that Patty doesn't want to leave.
Try and get Oates to stay for 2yrs @ around 300k a year.
Give TMM a year extension, 250k?

Then, hit the market. For me there is no standout and I still hold out a bit of hope that Payne will stick around next year.
2024 @ 950k means I'm not too worried if he is gone because then I think there would be more options available..

If everything goes to plan, I don't think we will need to buy a spine player.
2023/2024:
1. TMM/Farnworth/Cobbo(?)
6. Mam
7. Reyno
9. Paix/Walters, Mozer(?)

I wouldn't mind getting Walsh back but depending how things turn out, we may not need him. I'm still 99% confident he will be a Dolphin anyway.

Not keen on Walsh. He seems like another one with a me first, team second outlook. Took the soft option to a walk up start at the warriors instead of biding his time and EARNING his spot.
Absolutely no to Walsh, he is the exact opposite of the type of person we need and that we have worked hard to rid the club of.

I'd be stoked if we somehow managed to swap Haas for Tino...

Tino is better than Haas in my opinion. His numbers aren't as high, but every other element of his game is better, and he is obviously a bit of a leader.

So with Haas all but guaranteed to be leaving in the off-season, and it being on the public court record that his salary in 2023/2024 is 800k/850 we effectively have that money free to go to market.

If you believe the rumours, Cobbo is all but signed before the release news, so his upgrade was already factored in, as has Herbie's 1 year deal.

These are the players off contract, available for next year.

Adam Elliott
Ryan Sutton
Raymond Faitala-Mariner
Matt Moylan
Briton NIkora
Royce Hunt
Jarrod Wallace
Martin Taupau
Dunamis Liu
Anthony Milford (lol)
Josh McGuire (lol)
Jordan McLean
Ryan Matterson
Tom Opacic
Hayze Perham
James Tamou

Nikora is a gun and Matterson is pretty good but I can't see us signing a backrower.

The off contract list is pretty shit, so I don't see how we're going to spend it, so I seriously think we might look at a Super League player for a 2 year deal.

Walsh is obviously a maybe given the rumours about him wanting out but I don't think the club will go there.

So what does the club do if we have 800k to spend? You have to spend 95% of your cap.
We really don't need to sign anyone major.

Our spine leading into the 2023 finals:

1. Cobbo
6. Mam
7. Reynolds
9. Mozer

Realistically, this might not be strong enough to knock over Penrith in 2023, but it's the foundation we're building.

Depth, we have:

Martin (1, 6, 7)
Walters (6, 7, 9)
Paix (6, 7, 9)
Gamble (6, 7)

If I were Kevvie, I'd be polishing Billy's CV and shipping him to the ESL, maybe Catalans. His time here is ticking out.

Centres:

3. Staggs
4. Farnworth

Wings:

2. Oates
5. ?

Moving Cobbo to fullback opens up a wing. Currently signed candidates:

Lee
Mariner
Niu
Arthars
Pereira

Plenty of options there. If Mariner takes Herbie's centre, then Herbie takes the wing. Great result. Otherwise, it might be the other way around. Tesi is only depth now. He should be let go.

Forwards, we seem okay to me. I don't see us lacking in any position, but a gun ball playing lock wouldn't go wasted.

We could use a 6 or 9, of Adam's standard. But do we really need to throw in a stopgap in front of Blake and Ezra? I think no.

I would keep my eye on the younger grades for outside backs. We will need a winger to replace Oates, and they tend to blossom young.

Ih haas talks come round to him staying with a statement of a re-evaluation of his future and wanting to stay, so be it.
Otherwise, end of season, let him go with whoever wants paying 100%
The titans and tino or perhaps fotiaka sounds good, or perhaps collins at the roosters.
In any event, another 1st team prop is a must if he goes.

I don't see us releasing Payne early. The only way we would be if it was to our advantage and it came with a player from a club, so who is off contract isn't all that relevant.

Hold the cash to load contracts. We got into the cap mess previously by rushing out and signing players on inflated contracts.

I think we're dreaming if we think Tino will leave the Titans, it's just not gonna happen. I'd think we'd be more chance of Haas swapping with Collins from the roosters ( plus some money) if they're really keen on Haas.

Absolutely, nothing wrong with having a bit of spare cash up your sleeve. We are building nicely and it’s the players that are buying in are the ones we need to keep. Spend the money on them if need be.

I think Jensen deserves to remain in the starting side. Especially if he keeps going the way he has.
Yep, Jensen has been good starting and flegler has been really good coming from the bench. I would not stuff around with that arrangement.

Spend it on Walsh for 2024. Payne’ll be here in 2023, can’t see Brisbane releasing him but he’ll probably get a top up to tide him over
