International rugby league

Back when I cared about these non-Origin rep games at least slightly more, I was kind of interested in seeing what breaking up Australia into QLD and NSW sides for these international games would have been like. At the very least it would have made them a lot more interesting and closer for me. Never considered splitting it like this, even back then it would have sounded even more stupid.

It Amazes me what goes through the head of other humans sometimes.

Is it basically only the new coach who wants it? That’s pretty funny if so.

”new coach believes he deserves more accolades” could be an appropriate title for the story.

What a stupid idea. Why do rugby league related people not think things even partly through before speaking? This is not only dumb, it is borderline racist.
Angus Crichton seems to have a good handle on it with some of his comments.

Indeed, how is dividing us ...uniting us....as a country?

I suppose it could end up in a bigger pay day for individual indigenous players..... and coach

of which history has proven, seems to be the main motivation for the outspoken few.....

These calls for Samoa to be promoted to Tier 1 are ridiculous.

They have one good campaign and now everyone is calling for it. Prior to the WC, they had only won 2 of their previous 10 games and their win against England was their first ever win against a Tier 1 side. Their previous games against them resulted in Samoa getting flogged.

They need to show maintained success and show they can be competitive against other Tier 1 sides regularly before they should even be considered.
It's the same as Tonga a couple years back, but they're now struggling due to a lack of spine players.

Is there any actual bonus to becoming Tier 1??

Or is it just getting to play more games??

Does an international rugby league federation give them more funding or anything?

Because the main reason they have any decent players at all is being able to play origin as well as playing for a Tier 2 nation.

Take that away and a lot of those players will take the paycheck of origin

But let's say they win the world cup, which while unlikely is obviously possible, how can you be tier 2 if you are world cup champions?

as much as England might not look interested in Rugby league overall the game against Samoa had 2.4 million viewers over there, sure they have a much higher population but those numbers are not a million miles off what we get for Origin games.

there are calls for both Samoa and Tonga to be elevated to tier one status after the world cup.

the ARL commission reportedly does not have a huge appetite to change the origin eligibility rules. the report says their hands may be forced if the IRL upgrades any of the Pacific Island teams to tier one status.

Working in the ARLC's favour is that Vlandys and Abdo are on the IRL board.

The criteria for being labelled a tier one nation is not based solely on a national team’s performance.

Each nation’s junior development, pathways and local competitions are key elements.

Don't think either will get Tier 1 status, PNG would even be above them in that regard, so would France.

You could make a case if they atleast get a team in Qcup or NSW cup though.

I get that Welsby shit the bed against Samoa, but that kid needs to be in NRL asap, it's a shame there are no links to him joining a team at the moment, but I see a player in him that could be one of the best in the game in a few years given the right environment.

if we didn't have Mam I would take him anyday over Madden to be our 6.

Still can't believe the didn't take him considering how dogshit their halves are.

cant find a ESL thread but snow in the wigan v catalan game **** that lol

Could of put this up earlier but forgot, Tonga has organised a tour of England for this year, a huge coup for them the first Pacifika nation to do so.

The NRL is trying to organise a 4 nations for the Pacific nations but isn't confirmed, I believe it will be Aus, NZ, Samoa and PNG.

Would be good to give Lebanon some more internationals though they need it against some quality teams, that said the Lebanon based players will get games against the lesser nations in europe.

The game is moving in the right direction for internationals regardless though.

didnt know rob burrow had Motor neurone disease guess it got lost in the noise of covid over the last few years.

Deserves its own thread. All these ***** that have been running around in Rubgy League over the years are put to shame by these two. So sad for poor Rob but he's still fighting and trying to do something good for the world. He's a legend.

France has withdrawn as the hosts of the 2025 Rugby League World Cup, over concerns for the financial viability of the tournament.

Organising committee said:

“This difficult decision is taken so as not to endanger the robustness of the models of major international sporting events that France wants to have from now on,”

IRL said:

“The France 2025 board of directors felt they had no choice after the French government demanded a guarantee for the risk of loss for the event, considering that the conditions initially set to secure the economic viability of the event were not met, after additional time and funding provided to the committee by the French Government to that end,” the IRL said.

IRL chairman Troy Grant added: “The factors that impacted on the bid team’s ability to complete the early structure of the tournament, such as the economic crisis and, in particular, inflationary pressure on host town council budgets, undermined their ability to secure adequate securities for the event to satisfy the government’s strict conditional benchmarks, put forward from the beginning of the process, for the tournament to proceed.

“Despite our focus having been on France, we will now accelerate our consideration of other contingency options.”
