Bird is a nice signing provided he isn't planned to be a fullback or 5/8th....

but Boyd is not a playmaking fullback. yes he can run a third man but he is not, has not, and will never play like lockyer.

boyd to 5/8th is a bad idea all over.

Why do we need him to play like Lockyer? As long as he develops a good combination with Milf, tackles hard and utilizes what is now an AAA grade backline, we'll be dangerous. If we're worried about kicking, well apparently Macca is taking up a big role in that department.

but he is not a playmaker, so the likelihood of him utilizing our backline is quite low, because it isn't what he does best.

the lockyer comparison was purely the last FB to 5/8th conversion we had, and the reason it worked was because lockyer was a playmaking fullback, so when he switched to halves he was able to continue without too much difficulty (aside from adjusting to the heavier defensive load), plus he did it at 27 + had played halves all his jnr's

Boyd is 29 (30 in 3 months), played at the back his whole career, and plays like a safe, defensive fullback who can occasionally inject himself into the line.

there is a huge difference between the two. if you wanted a fb turned 5/8th that can playmake, go after widdop.

I really don't understand all the fuss over where he is going to play. If Niko or who ever else has a half decent run in the 7 while Hunt is out Bird should play centre where he is a proven success. I don't believe Wayne would have pomised him anything until i see quotes. I think where he playswill all be up in the air until mid way through the pre season...

Despite our Club making its highest ever financial offer to secure a current player, it could not match the multimillion dollar deal offered to Bird to join the Broncos.

http://www.sharks.com.au/news/2017/04/13/club_statement_jack_.html

They are trying their best to make it sound like we are paying him ridiculous coin.

it also sounds like a load of shit about their offer to Bird being the highest in their history considering they reportedly would have been paying Barba 800k a year before they sacked him

Quality player with years of upside ahead. If Lodge is playing NRL with us next year we have a bloody good side.

Well it's never official until the club announces it.

From the Sharks webpage.

Our Club has today been advised that regardless of our best efforts to retain him, Jack Bird has accepted a multi-year contract at the Brisbane Broncos.

Kudos to @Accept as well, you were sure he was signed and he was. Well done.

Given the Sharks have announced it, does that mean he already signed 10 days ago?

You would assume so because it's been announced.

But, maybe there isn't any rule to stop a club from coming out and saying they lost a player before the end of the 10 day cooling off period.

Apparently we were offering Bird 350k more than what the Sharks offered?

So about 400k... That's the best they could come up with?

it could be 350k over 3 years ... so they would have offered around 600k a season

That actually makes more sense.

Still, I find it hard to believe that's their highest ever offer..
