Jack Bird Discussion

assuming we don't sign a halfback, I would probably go with something like:

1. Boyd
2. Kahu
3. Opacic
4. Roberts
5. Oates
6. Milford
7. Nikorima
8. Blair
9. McCullough
10. McGuire
11. Glenn
12. Gillett
13. Bird

14. Pangai Jnr
15. Sims
16. Thaiday
17. Ese'ese

with Glenn and Bird able to cover multiple position if we suffer an injury.

Quality looking side that with perhaps Opacic and Nikorima the most up for challenge out of 17 depending on circumstances.

I am ok with this for now. I don't want him playing in the halves or fullback though. Hopefully he is playing centre and will have to earn his five-eight spot. Show him some Hodges highlight and show him it's possible for a centre to get more involved in the game.

Today would have to be close to the day of the year where a signing's announcement must be most delayed because of the cooling off rule.*

By my calculations, with all these public holidays, we can't announce it until 3/5/17. Damn.

*I have never struggled to word a sentence more in my life and it is still unclear.

as far as i'm aware it his 10 days ... not 10 business days

Why would it waste his talent?

Because he just isn't an organising halfback. He is an off the cuff attacking five-eighth. If Bird does play 5/8th Milford will have to take control of the team and get them around the park. They are too similar players and playing Milford at halfback would just limit his game. This is all on the idea that they are going to play Bird as a 5/8. I would rather him play lock tbh. Kid is tough and I reckon he can handle it

unless Milford learns the ability to control a team he should forget about the $1 million+ contracts

Wayne Bennet is the best coach of all time, I'm pretty sure he knows what he's doing
Hey, i'm a Wayne fan.... don't get me wrong.

I guess i just can't wait to see what the crafty old bugger has in store.

What this mean potentially for the young up and comers?

We can't fit all of Su'a, Fai, Hipgrave, Arrow, Haas, Joffa, Etc in.

Who do we let go and who do we keep?

For me, I'd rank the three most important as:

1. Haas
2. Su'a
3. Fai

I think Joffa will be lost and one or two more.

I'm good with this. He's a good player, and I don't put any stock in what journalists tell us the contract is worth. Watch that 700k figure inflate and retract month-to-month over the coming years.

Also, stoked by this signing. Really a big fan of Bird and think he is underrated by some on here. Tough, young, versatile and has that quality about him that only the real stars have.

I've got no problems with the bloke backing himself as a spine/key player in the side. You need that sort of confidence to be a real star. He would by no means be the first Broncos player to have a huge ego, Bennett will manage him well.

A lot of teams are shifting away from the overly structured play that has dominated the NRL for more than a decade now. With this in mind, and the prospect of further reductions to the interchange, I honestly think Bird has the potentially to redefine the lock role, as a on-the-ball playmaker.

Further, I think the style of play Canterbury introduced under Hasler, using the forwards as links between the halves and one another is already and dated and has lost it's effectiveness. Having a ball playing lock such as Bird to fill this role could be a game changer for us going forward.

I'm gonna go against the grain here and suggest this talk about a halves role is smoke and mirrors. Because Wayne would never play the media like that, shirley....

Boyd to the halves is on boys. I can see it from a mile away. Boyd is safe as houses at the back yes, but he is not getting any younger, and you can visibly see he is starting to slow down and always hesitates to take the line on hard. Bennett is getting Bird to play fullback, in the exact same frame as Boyd. A playmaking fullback.

He won't be playing centre for us unless it's a dire emergency.

Thank goodness! The Storm ruined a decade of NRL and this was compounded by the incompetence of the refereeing.

I think you can thank the Jets and Raiders for the desire to be more attacking and exciting.

but Boyd is not a playmaking fullback. yes he can run a third man but he is not, has not, and will never play like lockyer.

boyd to 5/8th is a bad idea all over.
