RUMOUR James Roberts to Broncos

After Hodges had already signed the deal.

I never understood the hoopla over Bennett's decision. He was going out of his way to fit him into his 17 (playing him off the bench 10/12 times) and once it was clear that he wasn't going to be at the club moving forward, Bennett went with a more conventional line-up. He also gave some kid by the name of Brent Tate a shot.

Bennett sent him packing didn't he?

Hodges signed behind everyone's back. Bennett sent him packing to Toowoomba when he found out.

Ch 10 news just said the Broncos are not going to be tabling an offer to Roberts .

Channel Nine says Broncos are still in the running. These blokes have no idea.

Exactly, the club were preparing him for the long term and he wasn't an established first grader, Hodges signed elsewhere and from that point on the Broncos owed him nothing. Bennett went with Brent Tate afterwards because Hodges was no longer suitable for that role as they would have ended up having to replace him anyway. Next thing you know Hodges family was on A Current Affair portraying he had been unfairly treated by the club and Bennett was a monster.

Hopefully tomorrow we will all find out where he's playing next year and this Soap Opera will be over lol

The discussion about Roberts and our recruitment/salary cap over at LU is just fucking LOL atm

Yeah but when isn't it, these guys probably think Kodi Nikorima and Jordan Kahu are suddenly on 1 million dollar contracts because they played in a weakened NZ squad.

Only because their meal ticket money had been slashed. Bennett was the meal ticket slasher.

Wayne Bennett has upped the ante to secure James Roberts with the Broncos to table a formal offer to bring “The Jet” to Red Hill.
Brisbane is jostling with South Sydney and St George-Illawarra for the signature of the former Titans flyer who left the Gold Coast following a contract debacle.
Roberts’ camp has held discussions with the Broncos, who view the 22-year-old speedster as a potential replacement for retired centre Justin Hodges.

A sticking point of the negotiations will be Brisbane’s salary cap position with the Broncos unwilling to offer the $500,000-a-year Roberts could secure at a rival club.

Roberts is tipped to be named in the Indigenous All Stars for the first time to face Bennett’s World All Stars at Suncorp Stadium on February 13.

Roberts’ uncle and adviser, Jeremy Donovan, said discussions with the Broncos had been positive.

“The Broncos have indicated to us they will be making a formal offer,” he said.

“James has had discussions with the Broncos and we’re impressed with the professionalism and culture of the club.

“James loves being near the beaches. He loves his fishing and enjoys the lifestyle in Queensland.

“Maybe the small city feel of Brisbane will be an advantage for the Broncos.

“Wayne Bennett is the Kevin Sheedy of the NRL. He has a great affinity for indigenous athletes and he loves the gift that those guys naturally have and he backs turning them into great footballers.

“The Broncos would be a great fit for James but ultimately it’s his decision.

The Dragons were believed to be out of the race for Roberts after signing Bulldogs centre Tim Lafai.

South Sydney is still trying to make salary cap space to facilitate Sam Burgess’ return to the NRL but are believed to have at least $350,000 to secure a centre.

Bennett has earmarked Dale Copley to replace Hodges but Roberts would add further depth to Brisbane’s grand final-making roster.

Broncos forward Matt Gillett said Roberts would prosper under Bennett.

“Having Wayne as our head coach is a good fit for anyone,” Gillett said.

“He’s a good coach and gets the boys right off the field. James would probably get rewards off him.

“He’s one big talent in the league at the moment.

“He’d be handy to have here but at the moment we’ve got a pretty good squad.

“Dale will be taking Hodgo’s spot so we’ve got to get on with it.”

Donovan said Roberts wasn’t interested in playing hardball and was hoping to make a swift decision.

“There are several factors for James to consider but I can assure you this isn’t about chasing more money,” he said.

“We’ve told the clubs we’re not getting into a tug of war. We just want their best offers and then James will make a decision with honesty and integrity.”

I'm glad they are unwilling to offer that.

He isn't worth that much.

He is a speedster. That's all he is at the moment. He needs to improve his game before we offer him that much.

“There are several factors for James to consider but I can assure you this isn’t about chasing more money,” he said.

And that part there is a crock of shit. Why did he leave the Titans again after saying he wanted to stay?
