Josh McGuire signs with Cowboys - Immediate Switch

What was his contract value?
From memory it was reported as being quite high... somewhere in the realms of $600-750k.

I think his last contract was signed in the season where he was playing 80mins at prop and destroying teams. Just before his transition to lock.

There was a lot of interest at the time and I can remember being extremely relieved to hear we had signed him up for as long as we did.

Just goes to show you how much can change over the course of one contract period. McGuire, Merrin and Taupau were considered indispensable players only a couple of years ago, now they're all on the move.

All posts relevant to McG/McGuire/Maguire now in here. :)

His last season was extremely disappointing, but he was a gun between late 2011 and 2017. Last season makes this easier, but I'd be really disappointed if this happened last year.

Been a great servant but certainly won't miss him constantly getting into first receiver and stuffing up every 2nd play like he always seemed to do.

Remember, you are a forward Josh, not a fucking half!

It's always disappointing to lose a loyal club servant, especially after a 194 games of service. As I wrote the other day, his last season may have been below his best, but McGuire was one of the Broncos most consistent performers and had a knack of turning up for the big moments.

I thought he over-achieved when he was selected as an Origin lock forward. I always saw him as a stop-gap at club level and didn't think he'd have that extra gear in him. Then mid-way through the second half of Game II 2017, he splits the game wide open with a big surge that brings the Maroons into it and it wasn't much longer until he won a World Cup with the Australian team.

Even before then, his 2011 really shocked me. Despite receiving all the raps, I didn't see the big deal in Josh at 20s. Maybe it was a case of only seeing a handful of games, but what struck me about his game was his willingness to pass the ball instead of running it up. Despite looking like a young Webcke in the middle, he played softer. Fast forward to 2011 where at 21 years of age he's ripping into every forward pack in the competition and was right up there with Matulino as the form front rower of the competition.

It seemed like in 2011-12 there was nothing he couldn't do. Griffin was similar to Wayne in that he rarely showed any emotion in the coach's box, but the one time I remember him getting animated was during a double header against Manly where Josh put in a mid-range kick and it resulted in an easy try, it was incredible.

I can't fault anyone in this situation. I'm happy for Josh that he was able to secure his family's future, happy for the Broncos since it gives them the opportunity to cycle through their prospects and I'm even happy for the Cowboys who now have a much stronger rotation. I still think McGuire has plenty to offer and I think he'll be a great fit for the Cowboys who desperately needed some fresh blood in their front row rotation.

I do wonder if this is White taking control and realising that the 2015 side needs to be moved on and really making the big decisions Bennett doesn't seem to be willing to make anymore. I like the direction this club is taking, they are getting rid of the old boys mentality.

Proof will be in the pudding I guess.

Thought Brisbane could ill afford to lose an older head considering the youth of the pack. Fingers crossed Gillett is the same player he was but who knows. Take him out of the forwards and it looks very green.

Won't miss all those 4th tackle 5 metre gains with no threat to opposition (which was mostly maccas fault anyway). Pleople forget one of the reasons we were so good at the back end of 15 was precisely because macca was giving it to Blair and Thaiday on 4th (and not Josh) to create 2nd phase for milf.

Having said all that shit I will miss the passion and competitiveness he brings (hes one of my favorites in that regard)..so back to cheering for clothes this year.

I don't mind losing McGuire. A very good player but not really the forward leader/captain we need. It depends who we replace him with I guess. I think this is could be a win for all parties involved.

Well I may have been wrong with what I said about Sam Tagataese, may have ended up helping his cause now. I'll miss McGuire, not because he was an amazing player but because of his attitude and not a player going through the motions, you need those players in your side as much as the game winners(it's all about balance). Yes granted I think it's fair to say he lost a bit of impact as a player with the eye injury he suffered but he still would go out there and have a dig. Good luck to him at the Cowboys.

Part of me wonders if the Broncos let him go to start a cleaning phase with the squad/salary cap and make room for the future players and possible signings with Seibold coming in.

The Broncos have lost Thaiday, Sims and now looks like McGuire. Those pushing for Glenn(and I have even seen comments of Gillett) may want to rethink that. I have trust in the young forwards coming through but you still need a balance of experience and leaders in your pack as well.

Does this change anything for Bird? McGuire was certainly his biggest stumbling block.

Did Bird just talk about playing in the centres because he wasn't allowed to reveal, or didn't know, McGuire's intentions?

All these and more, likely discussed between @Wolfie and co.

Hadn't heard a thing about Moose going until yesterday. Heard a whisper they were chasing a Bronco forward a while back because of concerns about Scott and it was Joffa. Never imagined it would be moose!

I think you are probably spot on here and any recruitment & retention involvement has been taken out of Wayne's hands.
