Langer gone. Who is attacking coach next season?

The biggest positive out of hiring Kearney is that he has no real connections with the Broncos. Fresh blood at the club and a guy with enough experience to speak up.

+1. I really wanted the club to replace Langer with someone out of the club and as far as assistant coaches go there's not many people better qualified than Kearney.

I can't see many positives. Griffin just bought in another bloke who loves structure as much as he does. As far as I'm concerned we are in for more of the same boring ram a thon footy.

God I hope I'm wrong, it'll be a looooonnng season if I'm right.

I like it. I think people are too hung up on his tenure at the Eels.

So what if he isn't that good a motivator? That's not what he's going to be here for, as we have a pretty good head coach in that aspect.

On the other hand, I think he can complement Hook in his weaker areas, such as our attacking structure, interchange and as others mentioned, slowing down the opponent's play the ball. He did hang out quite a bit with Bellamy and Bennett after all, and must've picked up a thing or two...

Heh, I can just picture Hook looking over at Kearney in the coaches box and looking at him like 'do I make the swap now' & Kearney keeps shaking his head until exactly the right moment like he's the Mr. Miyagi of the bench.

Hook shouldn't have a problem with interchange now that Te'o & Civo are gone. The starting pack will play 60-80 minutes with the bench dividing 20-30 minutes amongst themselves generally.

Interesting quotes from Hook in the CM on Kearney.

"Stephen has won Four Nations and World Cup titles as coach of the Kiwis, and was involved with premiership victories at the Storm,"

"The fact his experience has been gained outside the history and culture of this club means he brings a new point of view to our coaching department.

"Things didn't work out in his two years at Parramatta, but that's the way it goes in coaching sometimes. In his first six months at the Eels he made a lot of positive changes, particularly with the side's defence.

"Steve has a terrific work ethic and is passionate about coaching. It's still very early in his career and he has a hunger for success."

-------------------------------------

To me it reads - We wanted to bring a fresh new perspective to the club, Kearney's representative resume impressed us and we liked the defensive structures he brought to the Eels in 2011.

I liked them too and if he can bring us that and we're not trying to bring him in as Human Resources manager or motivational speaker I believe we'll be just fine.

Alfie had been apart of our coaching staff since 08 & if anything oversaw some of our worst years. I didn't see any positive changes he brought in as an assistant (unless he was the one who brought in the set plays that magically disappeared when Henjak left) & he never seemed to want to do anything in coaching and always talked himself down. Kearney will want to prove himself at the best organisation in the game.

I like the reasons given for it, but I'm just not sure Kearney brings much. Sure, he's fresh to the club, but I'm not convinced he knows anything that he can bring to the table that will excite us.

Very happy to be proven wrong.

What's the odds Alfie was encouraged to 'quit'?

I'm happy Kearney is coming as i think he has a lot to offer as an assistant.

New blood is good.

I'd like to know what we are going to do about our attack. Our D wasn't bad at all. The way I see it the few games we had blow outs against us our 1 dimensional attack put our D under pressure.

We need our attack to be different, we lack brilliant players, we lack speed so we have to get a lot better with our hands and our deception. Also we need to let the players have a crack from outside the 20 if they see something.

Given that Paarramatta have an ad-lib policy, that doesn't suit Kearney's style. He may work wonders with a team that needs set structure in attack.

I'd also like to hear what's being done with our attack during the pre-season but I thought our defence needed a lot of work. I kind of felt like, we almost compensated for our defence with our conservative attack and instead of chancing our arm, almost always going for a cross field kick or a bomb into the corner to make it hard for the opposition in attack.

When that wouldn't occur, we always looked vulnerable in defence and could really concede some very soft tries or get torn apart quite easily for a good passage of play. There were issues like we weren't covering well back on the inside (highlighted in R25 against Manly) or we were just guilty of conceding way too many easy metres (evident in....well pretty much EVERY game).

We need to mainly fix the latter because I feel like it'll have a roll on effect & right now I feel like that's something these players can handle.

Working on our attack is going to take awhile, from around half a season to a full season but our players will get there.

Sorry, no premiership victories and people seem to forget Bennett was the "assistant" coach of the Kiwis.

Not in 2010.

Experience is experience and you won't find much better in the open market other than Sheens.

What would our bench look like with sheens running the show
