Matt lodge

This. I also think there is something at play here we are not privy to.
It may be that we are freeing up money for a big name signing and letting Lodge go will give us the cap wiggle room for it to happen.
Hynes/Smith etc etc.
We should be able to get hynes without having to dump lodge.
Hynes is not a top shelf player yet so shouldn’t command big dollars.

He is but I wouldn't put it past our R&R team and Lodge's agent going rogue.

it wouldn't matter if they did go rogue ... DD has to sign off on it before it can happen

Hynes is reportedly asking for around 350K a year. The Broncos cannot afford that with the other recruiting plans that they have. Dumping half of Lodge's obscene and utterly ridiculous 800K salary means that they now can. Mark it on your calendar, my man. Hynes will be in Bronco colors next season.

How can we not? We had that cash sitting there for Coates?

a lot of this statement is guess work at best

you wouldn't know what Lodges salary is
you wouldn't know what our recruitment plans are
you wouldn't know our salary cap position

Great news for Kevvie as he gets his son Billy back under his gaze while lodgey will leave with a big frown on his face . So that’s Reynolds tick then Billy tick now we wait on the theatrics of the pale rider. Good grief.

But that cash is going on Capewell, S'ua and a comeback from Leon Bott. I certainly don't know the ins and outs of the salary cap situation but I think they have lot less available than what most fans presume.

Of course it's guess work like all these posts are. If I had inside knowledge of their financial situation, do you think I'd be sharing it on this forum with a bunch of strangers? I do know one thing though. Hynsey will be in Brisbane next year. It is a tailor made role for him.

I love Lodgey but that ridiculous contract is an anchor. If Newcastle are taking the full freight from next year even if we have to subsidise this year I think we need to do it.

Yeah if it gets his PO years off our books is probably worthwhile. Gee he’s been good lately though. His effort v roosters was one of the best impact prop performances in recent memory. Completely dominated in the aggression battle and still had time for slick offloads and ball playing, and he showed some of the best leadership We’ve seen in years.

Okay. For the sake of argument let's assume Lodge is on 800k.
What is his true value? 500/600k?
So, if we kept him for the next two years the most we'd have spent that was OVER his value would be 400-600k.
That's only if we thought he was a little overpaid.
Hardly seems worth it.

Little point to buying good spine players if we have a worse forward pack. Balance is needed sure, but offloading a good-could-be-great prop for what appears to be zero gain is pointless. I mean isn’t that what Milford’s money should be for? We could buy at least 2 players just with his cash

I still don’t see Capewell or Su’A happening either

We do have a lot of really good forwards still even without Lodge - Haas, Carrigan, Kennedy, Flegler (who will explode, just wait), Robati, Palasia, Bullemor + some really promising kids. If we can get in a battle-hardened experienced prop on a small contract, like Lui for example, it could certainly help balance the squad better. The problem for me is how much of his money are we ACTUALLY getting off the cap.

Don't want to lose him. He should be captain the rest of the year FFS. I fear this is a big mistake.

If we're footing some of the bill...and there's NOT a big signing reason for it...could be one of the worst decisions by this club. Given the shitshow of the past few years, that's saying something.

Is it confirmed?
What do we know for certain?
I hope whatever is planned it happens after the season is over. I'd really like to understand the reasons if it happens mid season. Probably won't get told I suppose.
