Matty John's new program on Ch 7

Yeah I agree with Gymp. However, I can't see myself watching it on a regular basis though. And I stopped watching it halfway through - but it was decent which was more than I expected.

Also, Webcke is one of the more eloquant footballers. He should be in commentary, he makes a LOT more sense than Lewis, Johns, Tallis etc

I am the same will probably watch it if I remember but won't be upset if I miss it.

You are spot on about Webcke he has so much media talent, playing for a coach like WB probably helped build that great footy brain plus reading the news would have built up his great on camera manner. He is wasted only as an offsider on a variety show, so is Matty for that matter he is way too smart to just being doing this.

Just hope channel 7 have a red hot crack at the TV rights for the NRL when they are due for renewal. Webcke would make a stellar commentator..

I thought the parts where they talked football (so maybe 5 minutes of the entire show) was OK, and the segment at the start with Anh Do was funny. Other than that, oh my goodness that was an hour of my life I will never get back. Farking horrible.

I feel sorry for Shane Webcke he is absolutely wasted on Channel 7. If Channel 9 keep the rights as expected I would love to see them make Webcke an offer.

This show makes the Footy Show seem so professional

I think it has potential.

Less skits and more footy talk and it will be decent.

They had a lot more players involved than The Footy Show usually does.

I agree, I actually enjoyed, which is saying something because I havn't watched the Footyshow for years.

I had the misfortune of seeing the cab driver skit at the start plus the first part where they showed the "highlights" of what was coming up. I'm sure it will surprise no-one on here when I say that I can't see myself turning it on again...

It was by far the most embarrassing thing on television that I have seen for a long time.

It was HORRID. The skits were ridiculous and they didn't talk footy really - it was like they were rushing through a script! Is this show lasts more than 3 weeks, I'll be surprised.

I would second that - unless I'm vastly over-estimating the intelligence of the general public I would give it about 3 weeks too

Really enjoyed controversy corner tbh. Thought it was fantastic. 10/10

2/10, being generous, for the rest of the show. Potential is there, but we really need to cut the silly skits down to about half of what they are. Some good ideas, a fair bit of rubbish. A big "meh" from me.

I loved controversy corner and ill tune in every week just for that and just like mick 10/10 for it.

We have a problem in Australia that has it's roots in the early years of American night time variety. Matty Johns' show is not the only show that suffers from it ,many others have come and gone as a result of it. Put simply, it is the notion that to win widespread appeal a show must be understood by all. Naturally this is impossible, many people are just not that bright (through no fault of their own mind you) and this desire to make all viewers understand means that even the most obvious joke/skit/satire must be crystal clear to even the thickest of viewers.

Years ago we referred to it as ba boom or boom tish these days. The yanks used to hit the cymbal/drums when the audience was supposed to respond and the audiences responded accordingly. Much like conditioning an animal for obedience they sort to condition the viewers for the appropriate responses. what this led to was the errant belief that the audience (generally speaking) was generally pretty dumb and NEEDED everything explained to them.

That has led us to the point we are at today. Every skit/joke is unnecessarily protracted so as to ensure that absolutely everyone got the joke, no-one missed. People like Bob Hope personified this but it goes further back of course to the vaudevillian days when the audience was always prompted. Think Conan, Letterman and the myriad others who use the boom tish after every joke or pun. Conditioning.

When you watch the quality English humour you see the difference, they actually let you, the viewer ,decide if something is funny or if it's working well. They do not infer that we are stupid or cannot fathom their brilliant wit, it's up to us to decide. It's no co-incidence that american shows became more British like during the 80s/90s.

Somehow the twats at SEVEN are still 40 years behind the times. What we need is short, succinct humour. We'll decide , the Matty Johns show has little or no future whilst-ever they treat us like dullards.

Well said Huge.

Think Two and a Half Men. I actually think some of it is very funny - crude, but funny - but I get totally put off by the canned laughter. It insults me. I KNOW it's funny, I don't need a laugh track to tell me.

It's why shows like Arrested Development and Scrubs in the US are a breath of fresh air. They let you decide if it's funny or not.

Seriously - will you two get a room today? All this loving and agreeing is making me ill...

WHERE IS THE REAL COXY AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH HIM?

Yeah...I'm a fan of the early episodes of 2.5 men, unfussed about the later. The canned laughter hurts but if it's subtle (a word that does not appear in any American dictionary) it's easy to forget.

I was going to mention in my previous post the compliment inherent in the duplication of 'The Office' as we all know imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. At least these yanks knew enough to simply ape the class act that Ricky Gervaise is and keep pretty true to the scripts given them. Incidentally, my sons favourite show is the American version but he's yet to see any of the English version. I actually like them both.

You can't compare shows that at on at different timeslots.
