He's no Tom Symonds!
Wonder if sticky is going to try and throw some ridiculously large amount of money at him?
THE Broncos have today called in the biggest gun of all in a bid to keep much-improved prop Josh McGuire at the club in 2015.
With Martin Kennedy not living up to the raps and Ben Hannant set to leave at season's end, McGuire is seen as the great white hope for the Broncos in the engine room.
But at least two Sydney clubs are chasing the rugged front-rower, throwing the kind of money at him that the Broncos can't match.
So the Broncos have enlisted club legend Darren Lockyer to persuade McGuire that his future rests in the sunshine state.
It was Lockyer who played a key role in the Broncos' successful capture of Raiders gamebreaker Anthony Milford in recent months.
And Broncos officials are hoping Lockyer, a revered figure in Brisbane, can also work his magic on McGuire in coming days.
"The young guys worship him and if anyone can keep Josh in Brisbane, Locky can," a Broncos source tells me.
It's a bit sad if every recruitment / retention decision goes so sour that we have to get Locky involved...
This is why you need to actually watch players play before signing them. Kennedy, Jesus Christ.
He wasn't great last year either. QLD selectors have been suss lately too.
Not sure how much stock I'd put in that site.
McGuire and locky wee seen having breakfast together last Friday morning so it is true about him trying to persuade josh to stay.
McG won't leave. He comes across as the sort of player who wants to be a 1 club man. Not to mention he has a newborn and has only just bought a house. If he goes anywhere at all, it'll be the Titans but they seem fairly busy signing has beens.
THE Broncos have moved to secure Josh McGuire until the end of 2017 to stave off a poaching threat from several Sydney clubs, including the Cronulla Sharks.Queensland selection boss Des Morris will attend Friday’s Brisbane-Cronulla clash at Suncorp Stadium to assess McGuire’s claims for a Maroons debut in Origin III.
But Morris isn’t the only one monitoring McGuire, with his opponent, the Sharks, expressing interest in one of the code’s best emerging bookends.
Mindful of overtures from Sydney clubs, Broncos hierarchy have launched a counter strike, discussing an upgraded two-year extension with their No. 1 front-rower.
McGuire is off-contract at the end of next season, meaning NRL rivals cannot formally table an offer until November 1 — giving Brisbane a five-month negotiating headstart.
But the Sharks are circling. Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan is known to be a huge fan of McGuire, who is reluctant to sign an extended Broncos deal until he tests his value on the open market.
The 24-year-old’s aggression and workrate would be handy assets for a seasoned Sharks pack containing NSW Origin stars Paul Gallen and Luke Lewis.
“The Broncos are keen to extend Josh and we are looking at all options,’’ McGuire’s manager Simon Mammino said.
“Out of respect we have met with Brisbane because he has been with them his whole career.
“We have had a chat with the Broncos but at the moment Josh’s intentions are to focus on football and then see what’s out there.
“There’s a number of Sydney clubs interested — they have made me aware they are keen on Josh.
“A move to Sydney would not deter Josh, he has family in Sydney and support networks down there.
“But he’s a loyal bloke and Brisbane is the incumbent club, so we owe them the last right to his services.’’
McGuire’s current deal is worth around $250,000 this season, but he could fetch upwards of $400,000 on the open market, particularly if he earns an Origin call-up.
With Matt Scott out of Origin III and Broncos pair Matt Gillett (shoulder) and Corey Parker (eye socket) racing the clock, McGuire is in the frame for his Maroons debut.
Morris said the former Samoan international would be hard to ignore if he produces a barnstorming performance against the Sharks tonight.
“Josh McGuire is certainly in the mix,’’ he said.
“A big game (on Friday) won’t do Josh any harm, that’s for sure. We’ll see how he handles the occasion.
“Josh has been in the system for a number of years now so it wouldn’t be a gamble picking him.
“We have to pick the best side to win it and Matty Scott won’t be there so there’s an opportunity for a front-rower.
“Josh has been mentioned at our meetings. I’ll be at the game keeping an eye on a number of guys including Josh.’’
