[Official] Smith re-signs with the Storm

To be fair with what Wally had to work with the Gold Coast side plus all the drama going on at the club, I don't think it gives an accurate reading of his abilities as a coach.

Wally lost 2 Origin series as a coach and only had a club winning percentage of 16%. Just another example of a great player not making it as a coach. Being a captain/coach isn't possible in this era as the game is extremely professional these days and just being a player requires a lot of work and dedication to one role.

After the 1991 series Queensland lost 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1996 prior to super league, 1995 was the only winning series and even then that took a miracle, NSW dominated that period. The Gold Coast squad was laughable at best, given a better squad with Wynnum Manly he showed he could produce results, your right though the days of captain/coaches are long gone and I'd never support Smith being one. Bottomline is I'm not arguing Wally was a great or even a good coach, just that I think his time at the Seagulls isn't an accurate indication of ability as one.

An offer of $1.1 million a year for 3 years is warranted for a player like him but that will take up to much cap space and we wouldn't be able to afford any other high profile talent and could struggle to keep the big names we've got. I would offer him $700,000 to $80,0000.

it depends whether they bring in the rule where you can have one marquee player completely outside the cap

1.1 mil is the new 700-800k. In 3 yrs time, a lot more players will be on this sort of coin.

As the salary cap increases.......1.1 mil/season for Smith now, will turn out to be a bargain.

as much as i'd rather spend the money on a younger player like DCE (if he was a realistic chance of coming), Smith would be worth that sort of money. its not just about what he will bring us on the field, but the leadership he will bring us off it.

as well as being a draw card for potential signings over the next 3 years.

it would also leave us in a great position to add him to our coaching staff once he retires.

i think he could easily play for another 4-5 years (especially if he retires from rep footy shortly).

I won't be taking much notice of the rumored $$$ we offer Smith. He will be able to get so many 3rd party sponsorship up here he could be on $600k under the cap and still make over $1.5 million a year.

Agreed. I mean Parker is 1 year older, and Gallen is 2 years older, and are both still dominating. Civo and Price were still excellent at 34.

Smith still has 3 or 4 years in him at least IMO. And it's his footy brain that's most valuable.
